Research and Planning for Mugs- Spring 2022 name:

1. Find an artist online who creates mainly functional ceramics, including mugs. Share
who they are, where they are, and say what you like about their style of mug.
Julie Cloutier lives in rural California, they create very simplistic and modern feeling
functional ceramics. She is inspired to create these designs from her architectural
background. I really like the consistency of her body of work and the natural feel that
she creates.

2. Add two photos of the artist's mugs below.

3. Find images online of three mugs that were made and clay shapes are added onto
the original mug body to transform them to resemble a character, animal, person, or
detailed object.
4. Find three images online of mugs where the surface has detailed carved designs and
colors to make it unique. ( perhaps sgraffito or slip trailing is used )

5. The body of the mug can personalize the style, and the mug’s function. It can be
short and wide or tall and narrow, etc. Find three different body shapes to paste below.

6. Some of you will prefer to throw your mug, but you may hand build it with a template
if you prefer. Find a tutorial on Youtube for “how to handbuild a mug” that you find
usable. Add the link after you watch it here.

7. Now, Draw two possible mug plans for yourself. You must make a functional mug,
and add on unique and complex surface details. Add colored pencil to your two
sketches and include how you will build… throw or handbuild initially the body? (
Perhaps combine designs you saw but don’t copy exactly:) attach sketch images here,
then discuss with me to begin.
