is all about the two types of circuit breaker.

Let’s have a recap by identifying the types of circuit breaker based on their physical appearance and
characteristics. Are you ready?
3 secs BIZ: MSC UP AND Under
Show PPT Slide # 2 OK! what type of circuit breaker is flushed on your screen?
This type of circuit breaker is typically used in residential application.
3 secs BIZ: MSC UP AND OUT
If you’re answer is PLUG-IN CIRCUIT BREAKER, you are correct!
Show PPT Slide # 3 Plug-In circuit breaker is a specific type of miniature circuit breaker, which is installed in a special type of
electrical panel box.
How about this second picture?
Show PPT Slide # 3
This type of circuit breaker is preferred in commercial or industrial applications where vibrations is an issue.
3 secs BIZ: MSC UP AND OUT
If you’re answer is BOLT-ON CIRCUIT BREAKER, again you are correct!
Show PPT Slide # 4 Bolt-On circuit breaker are meant for commercial and industrial use where machinery may be causing vibration
in a building.
Good job my dear my learners! I’m glad to know that you still remember our last lesson. I think you are now
On Camera
ready to listen for our next lesson for this afternoon.
3 secs BIZ: MSC UP AND OUT
Show PPT Slide # 5 Our lesson for today is all about the “Parts and Function of a Circuit Breaker”.
3 secs BIZ: MSC UP AND OUT

Show PPT Slide # 6 We have eight different parts of a circuit breaker.

1. Actuator Lever
2. Actuator Mechanism
3. Contacts
4. Terminal Connections
5. Bimetallic Strip
6. Calibration Screw
7. Solenoid
8. Arc/Divider Extinguisher
3 secs BIZ: MSC UP AND OUT
Let’s start with the first part which is the Actuator Lever. Actuator lever is used to manually switch a circuit
Show PPT Slide # 7
breaker ON and OFF.
Show PPT Slide # 8 It is also used to reset a circuit breaker when it’s tipped because of electrical fault.

Through the position of the actuator lever, it indicates the status of the circuit breaker whether it is ON, OFF or
Show PPT Slide # 9
Tripped.

3 secs BIZ: MSC UP AND OUT

Show PPT Slide # 10 The second part is the Actuator Mechanism. Actuator mechanism forces the contacts together or apart.

Show PPT Slide # 11 This mechanism is a metal arm inside the circuit breaker.
One end is attached to the actuator lever, and the other end is attached to a contact.

4|Page
5|Page

The essential function of the actuator mechanism is to force the contacts together or separate when the breaker
trips.

The actuator mechanism forces the contacts to connect with each other when the circuit breaker is ON.
Show PPT Slide # 12 On the other hand, the actuator mechanism will force the contacts to separate with each other when the circuit
breaker is OFF or TRIPPED.

3 secs BIZ: MSC UP AND OUT

The third part is the Contacts. Contacts allows current to flow when they are connected and break the flow of
current when they are moved apart.
Show PPT Slide # 12
Contacts are two pieces of metals, that move to close or open the circuit, and these are the movable contact and
the fixed contact.

The movable contact is attached to one end of the actuator mechanism.

The other contact which is the fixed contact is attached to the main panel of the circuit breaker.
These contacts allow the current to flow when they are in contact with each other, and break the current flow
when they are moved apart.

3 secs BIZ: MSC UP AND OUT

Show PPT Slide # 13
Another part is the Terminal Connection. Terminal Connection are used to connect the current from the source

6|Page

to the circuit.

Show PPT Slide # 14 The terminal connection is a metal block that extend out as a bolt.

There are two terminals in a circuit breaker, and these are the upper and the lower terminals.
The upper terminal is a slot for the connection of wires from the source. While the lower terminal is a slot
Show PPT Slide # 15
for the connection of wires to the circuit.
These terminals are normally called as side terminal or load side lug terminals.

3 secs BIZ: MSC UP AND OUT

Next is the Bimetallic Strip. Bimetallic Strip separate the contacts in response to smaller, longer-term over
Show PPT Slide # 16
current.

It is a thin, flat piece of sheet metal, which the primary function is to force the contacts to separate and break the
Show PPT Slide # 17
flow of electric current in response to overcurrent like overload that makes the circuit breaker to trip.

3 secs BIZ: MSC UP AND OUT

Show PPT Slide # 18 The sixth part of circuit breaker is the Calibration Screw. Calibration Screw allows the manufacturer to

6|Page
7|Page

precisely adjust the trip current of the device after assembly.

This screw is used to calibrate and adjust the timing, current, and contact resistance of a circuit breaker depend on
Show PPT Slide # 19 its rating.
The calibration of circuit breaker is carried out when the assembly of the circuit breaker is done.

3 secs BIZ: MSC UP AND OUT

Next part is the Solenoid.

Show PPT Slide # 20
Solenoid separates the contacts of the circuit breaker rapidly in response to overcurrent.

Solenoid is a device comprised of a coil of wire use as an electromagnet.

Show PPT Slide # 21 The primary function of the solenoid is to force the contacts to separate and break the flow of electric current in
response to overcurrent like a short circuit that makes the circuit breaker to trip.

3 secs BIZ: MSC UP AND OUT

And lastly the 8th part of circuit breaker is the Arc/Divider Extinguisher.
Show PPT Slide # 22
Arc/Divider Extinguisher is the component of circuit breaker that extinguishes the arc while in fault condition.

Show PPT Slide # 23 The primary function of Arc/Divider Extinguisher, is help to stop burning inside the circuit breaker cause by arc

or spark because of electrical fault and to keep the arc from recreating itself and prevent damage of circuit
breaker.

3 secs BIZ: MSC UP AND OUT

OK class, those are the different parts of a circuit breaker and their functions.
On Camera
Before we end, let’s label the parts of a circuit breaker by identifying them again one by one with their function.

Ok class, again those are the primary parts of a circuit breaker with their function.
On Camera
I hope that you understand our lesson for today.
3 secs BIZ: MSC UP AND OUT

Now to check if you really understood our lesson, let’s have a short quiz by identifying the parts of a circuit
