HDVC Project proposal

HDVC (Help for self-help to Disabled and vulnerable children)

HDVC is a registered local organization and has its main office in Kigali. Since 2009
HDVC is serving vulnerable children and families who are from rural area of Kigali city
and other parts of the country. It has a community center where vulnerable children
with special needs and their parents meet to get helped. It is having a big impact to the
lives of the children together with their families. HDVC organization is focusing on self-
help, inclusion and community development. Regarding the size of supported
population the organization currently provides a range of interdisciplinary care to more
than 88 children with varying disabilities and their families ,but turning around Cerebral
palsy, spina bifida and hydrocephalus, autism, and other kind of mental retardation also
physical disability.

Special needs for children

Children with special needs are affected by many problems in our society, there’s still
stigma in families where a child born with disability is not accepted easily, most of time
it is only a burden to the mother than others, she faces a rejection together with her
child, most of them cannot afford to provide a balanced meal to their kids because of all
those factors.so this is one of the focus to us HDVC to help families for awareness,
acceptance and proper care for a child with special need.

HDVC has multiple activities to be organized and offer the needs to the children, we
have different services namely physiotherapy, occupation therapy, special needs,
psychology and facilitate to acquire other health services. For families we have a big
focus to help them by different development projects as permagarden, grow fruits
trees, and have access to clean water by using water filters, sewing training for
mothers and other small income generating activities.

Providing porridge to fight malnutrition

A child with special need also a balanced meal and we try to offer a cup of porridge to
everyone and this is an everyday cost. The porridge is made of different cereals: maize,
sorghum, soya and wheat and milk.
For HDVC to be able to provide this porridge we calculate our cost as follow:
Numbers 88

Quantity of 8kg of porridge

porridge per day

Cost per day 7.2

Cost per month $144

Permagarden and green vegetables
Economy of the village relies on substance farming, where 95% of families are
estimated to do farming. Many families are able to put staples on table (Cereals, tubers,
and leguminous), most of the families they eat complete diet few times in week where
average among our trained families were eating complete diet 3 times in week. This
represents how it is in the community. The main issue is that families don’t grow
vegetables and also because of lack of financial means they don’t afford to buy
vegetables often. This problem is mainly rooted to the ignorance where families lack
skills of using available resources to grow vegetables and make it accessible on daily
basis, second issue the weather. Weather in that region allow the rainfall to be seasonal
and the period of June to the late September it is dry (this time is critical because many
people don’t know how they can grow vegetables and survive the dry, yet the
vegetables on market are very expensive as only few people grow them at time as
result on few families afford to eat vegetables).

To be able to continue this project of permagarden there’ a need of cost this we have
to pay the trainer (a well skilled person who have a good experience in teaching and
training the community members. There are also costs of seeds and other needed
materials.

For a successful training of 10-12 members to be trained by a trainer we need:

Cost of the trainer 300

Cost of seeds to grow in permagarden 120
Cost of other materials 60
Total cost/permagardern $480

For a successful permargarden training of 12 members we need $480 and this implies
$40 cost per a member.

Fruits trees and domestic animals(rabbits ,pigs and

goats)
We are expecting the improvement in environmental restoration as the fruits trees
planted and farming method introduced are designed to regenerate soil and giving
climate mitigation. In terms number we are expecting direct positive impact to 88
families (at least 600 people), where they will have access to daily nutritious vegetables
and fruits in near future, increase in saving and finally improved standard of living.
Long-term impact we expect this project to help in ending malnutrition in our
community, food resilient in the community, reduction in poverty and improved
standard of wellbeing in village.

It would be great if in all of the future projects we distribute the fruits trees; it is good
investments for the people, animals and environment of our time and future
generations. E.g.: Avocado tree can live 200– 400 years, science also shows well-
managed avocado plantation are sustainable and unproblematic, and they capture CO2
and release O2 in the air, financially one avocado tree in Rwanda can generate income,
yet it is easy to take care of avocado. They can also grow other trees like Tree
tomatoes, orange, papaya.

The cost of helping the community members to grow different fruits trees is as follow:

Cost of fruit 9
trees
Number of 1000
trees

Total costs $900

The cost for a family to get at least 10 fruits trees is 9 per family.
For a family to be able to raise a goat it cost $40-50,and to raise a pig it cost $70-90.

Sewing project (Training sessions for mothers)

HDVC started to offer trainig in sewing for mothers and wish to continue the project by
offering more sewing machines, fabrics and cost of a trainer.

Sewing is one of the small income project that can help the families mostly mother of
special needs children so for HDVC to be able to succeed this there are cost of materials
such as sewing machines, training fees for the trainer, purchase of materials for the
trainees to be used.

Estimated time 6 months

Number of machines 6
Cost of sewing machines 720

Cost of materials 300

Estimated salary of the 360

trainer in 6months

Total cost $1.380

This table highlights the cost of sewing project for a 6 months training and this session
can help 12 mothers to be trained in that period using 6machines and one trainer. The
total cost is $1.380.Each person (mother of a special need will need $115 for 6months
to be trained and be able to finish as an expert in sewing.
