PROFILE
Viking Group, Inc.
Company Profile
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Founded in 1920, Viking Group, Inc. is an industry leading manufacturer and distributor of
fire sprinklers and related products for fixed fire protection systems. Viking offers total fire
suppression solutions by providing its manufactured products and related third party products
along with value-added services such as fabrication, pre-assembly, product training, and
technical assistance. Viking’s products, which include both water and non-water based fixed
fire suppression systems, are installed in commercial, industrial, storage, office, institutional,
and residential properties around the world.
Viking Group is comprised of five primary business units; Viking Corporation, Viking
SupplyNet, Viking SupplyNet International, Viking Fabrication Services, and Viking Plastics.
Viking Corporation manufactures fire sprinklers, fire system valves, and related devices.
Viking SupplyNet distributes Viking Corp. manufactured products and third party products to
over 3,000 fire sprinkler contractors in the United States and an additional 3,000 fire
contractors internationally in over 80 countries. Viking Fabrication Services provides
customized, pre-fabricated steel piping systems according to fire contractor specifications,
saving the contractor from having to source, cut, thread, weld, and package steel piping
systems in-house. Finally, Viking Plastics was formed in 2007 to manufacture CPVC plastic
sprinkler piping to capitalize on the growing residential sprinkler market and the associated
need for CPVC products.
Combined, the companies of The Viking Group provide customers with the following
advantages:
Quality: Our reputation for quality has been earned over decades by focusing on
continuous improvement in all elements of our business – from the products we
manufacture to the services we provide.
Breadth: The largest selection of fire protection products and services ensures single-
point solutions for any fire protection challenge.
Support: The companies of The Viking Group are dedicated exclusively to fire
protection. Knowledgeable and experienced customer service and technical support
is provided at every point in the project process.
Innovation: From valves that are easier to install and maintain, to automated
fabrication capabilities, Viking's product innovations have been developed by a
thorough understanding of the needs of our customers.
Viking Group’s primary goal is to enhance and support the efforts of the fire sprinkler
contractor. Viking’s commitment to quality, service, and innovation means fewer problems
and more cost-effective solutions for both the installers and end users of fire suppression
systems worldwide.
MISSION AND STRATEGY
Mission Statement
To design, manufacture and distribute fire protection products and services which meet or
exceed our customers' expectations, and safeguard people and property worldwide from the
devastating effects of fire.
Strategy Statement
Service the critical needs of the fire services sub-contractor and the building owner in the
construction markets of the world. This service takes the form of a set of high quality,
innovative products and services which enhance the contractor’s ability to profitably compete
and which provides the owner with lasting value.
Strategic Concepts
A focus on customer and market needs is consistent with the delivery of our Mission. It is the
Company’s ongoing responsibility to survey the market to determine what the independent
contractor needs to thrive in the future, and provide it.
These products and services must be of the finest quality available to the marketplace, and
the delivery of them must correspond to the highest service level available.
To achieve these key concepts, the company will seek to develop its people to reach their
highest level of competence, and maintain a strong capital structure in order to invest in new
opportunities as they become apparent.
Markets Served
The Company’s products are installed in the widest range of construction. The major
markets are identified as follows:
COMPANY HISTORY
The Viking Group traces its roots back to the 1880s when Emil Tyden, a
Swedish immigrant, developed an innovative railroad car seal in Chicago.
In the late 1890s, Tyden was introduced to a businessman in Michigan who
convinced him to move to Hastings and found the International Seal & Lock
Company to manufacture the patented seals. To produce his boxcar seal in
mass, Tyden went on to create one of the world's first automation systems
– fully a decade before Henry Ford mass-produced automobiles.
Around 1920, after a fire destroyed the factory at the International Seal and
Lock Company, Tyden resolved to enter the fire sprinkler business.
Through a mutual friend, Tyden was introduced to a St. Louis businessman
who claimed to have developed some designs for fire sprinklers and valves.
A short time later, after it was apparent that the business was in trouble,
Tyden bought 100% interest in The Viking Corporation and began
manufacturing fire sprinklers and valves in Hastings.
The rapid growth of the fire sprinkler market in the mid 1970s caused Viking to establish a
network of affiliates who could properly service the market with Viking products as well as
other components necessary for sprinkler installations. By the mid-to late-1980s, Viking
divested itself of all contracting and design interests and focused on the development,
manufacture, and distribution of fire sprinklers, valves, and devices.
By the early 1990s, Viking SupplyNet was established as the sole distributor of Viking
products, as well as related fire protection components. Viking SupplyNet International was
also developed to build a strong international presence. Worldwide, Viking SupplyNet is now
represented by over 50 wholly owned locations as well as a large network of independent
distributors.
In 2002, Viking Group, Inc. launched Viking Fabrication Services to offer contractors
complete fabrication services for steel pipe, the largest component for most sprinkler
systems. And, in 2007, Viking Group expanded again with the formation of Viking Plastics.
Viking Plastics manufactures high-quality CPVC plastic sprinkler pipe used in residential and
certain light hazard properties.
Today, the companies of the Viking Group provide independent fire sprinkler contractors with
integrated solutions for any fire protection challenge. Our commitment to quality, service, and
innovation means fewer problems and better, more cost-effective solutions for fire sprinkler
contractors.
COMPANY STRUCTURE
The Viking Group is a holding company with five major subsidiaries. Employees work for
either one of the subsidiaries or Viking Group itself. Viking Group employees provide
services to subsidiary companies, including Finance, Information Technology, Marketing,
Human Resources, Supply Chain, and Executive Leadership.

Viking Corporation
As the manufacturing entity of The Viking Group, Viking Corporation manufactures the fire
sprinklers, valves, and devices sold around the world. At its primary location in Hastings,
Michigan it also conducts research and development activities in an advanced hydraulics
laboratory and in two fire test buildings. This is essential for obtaining the product approvals
important to the industry, including Underwriter’s Laboratories, Factory Mutual Global, and a
host of international approvals.
Viking products are thoroughly tested, listed, and approved by the most recognized
independent laboratories in the world, including the following:
Viking has the finest reputation for product quality in the field. This stems from a deep
competency in manufacturing. Viking Corporation is believed to be more vertically integrated
than its competitors, possessing machining, stamping, assembly, soldering and testing
operations. The majority of its sales go through Viking SupplyNet distribution centers, with
the remainder through independent distributors.

Installation
1. Hydrants should be handled with care to avoid damage. It is recommended to keep hydrants closed until use.
2. If the hydrant is not to be used straight away then it is recommended to coat threads and other machined parts with
an anti-rust oil and the hydrant should be stored in a dry and ventilated area. For long-term storage, the hydrant
should be checked regularly.
3. Before installation of hydrants, the connection should be free from dirt or other matter.
4. The positioning of the hydrant should be in accordance with local requirements. Ideally the pumper should face the
street and all connections should be away from any obstruction to connecting hoses.
5. The inlet elbow should be placed on a solid surface and if possible brace the side opposite the incoming flow to
reduce reaction stresses.
6. The underground parts of the hydrant should be surrounded with coarse gravel for support and drainage.
7. After the hydrant has been installed and tested, it is recommended to fully flush the hydrant before closing for
service. Before replacing the nozzle caps, it is recommended to check for correct drainage of the hydrant on closing
of the valve. This can be achieved by placing a hand over the nozzle opening, a suction should be felt.
Operation
1. Unscrew the nozzle caps and connect hoses.
2. Open the hydrant using the hydrant key (included) to the fully open position by turning the valve nut in an
anti-clockwise direction – do not force the hydrant to open further past the fully open position. Note that the
hydrant valve is not intended to control the flow, it should be used in either the fully open or fully closed position.
To control flow, a pressure/flow control valve should be fitted to the nozzle outlets on the hydrant.
3. To close, turn the valve nut in a clockwise direction – again, do not over tighten.
Maintenance
1. Carry out a visual inspection for signs of significant corrosion which may impair performance.
2. Where possible, carry out leak tests by opening one of the nozzle caps slightly and then opening the hydrant valve.
Once the air has escaped tighten the hose cap and check for leaks.
3. Close hydrant and remove one nozzle cap so that the drainage can be checked.
4. Flush the hydrant.
5. Clean and lubricate all nozzle threads.
6. Clean the exterior of the hydrant and repaint if required.
