YOUNGS DOUBLE SLIT EXPERIMENT

1. In YDS experiment, the distance between the slits is 1mm. The fringe width is
found to be 0.6mm. When the screen is moved through a distance of 0.25m
away from the slits, the fringe width becomes 0.75mm. Find the wavelength of
light used.

Ans: Distance between the slits d=1mm= 10-3 m

Change in position of screen ΔD=0.25 m

Change in fringe width Δβ = (0.75−0.6) mm

∴ Δβ = 0.15mm
= 0.15×10-3 m
𝜆
Change in fringe width Δβ = ΔD
𝑑
𝜆
0.15×10-3 = ×0.25

⟹ λ = 600nm

2. In the young’s double slit experiment by using a source of light of wavelength

4500Å the fringe width is 5mm. If the distance between the screen and plane of
the slits is reduced to half, what should be the wavelength of light to get the
fringe width of 4mm?

3. Calculate the distance between fifth and fifteenth bright fringes in an

interference pattern obtained by experiment due to narrow slits separated by
0.2mm and illuminated by light of wavelength 560nm. The distance between the slit
and screen is 1m.

4. In a Young’s double slit experiment wave length of light used in 5000 Å and
distance between the slits is 2mm, distance of screen from the slits is 1m. Find
fringe width and also calculate the distance of 7th dark fringe from central bright
fringe.

5. In YDS experiment, two slits are illuminated by a dichromatic light of

wavelengths 750nm and 600nm. If distance between the slits is 2 mm and the
distance between the slits and screen is 2m, at what minimum distance from the
central bright fringe will a bright fringe from interference pattern coincide with a
bright Image from other?
