1. Create a first draft of a WBS from the following scenario.

Make assumptions as needed based on the

section about project planning considerations and constraints in this chap- ter. In your WBS, describe the
skill sets required for the tasks you have planned.

Sequential Label and Supply has a problem with employees surfing the Web to access material the
company deems inappropriate for a professional environment. Therefore, SLS wants to insert a filtering
device in the company Internet connection that blocks certain Web locations and content. According to
the vendor, the filter is a hardware appliance that costs $18,000 and requires 150 hours to install and
configure. Technical support for the filter costs 18 percent of the purchase price and includes a training
allowance for the year. A software component that runs on the administrator’s desktop computer is
needed to administer the filter; this component costs $550. A monthly subscription provides the list of
sites to be blocked and costs $250 per month. An estimated four hours per week are required for
administrative functions.

including www.monster.com or www.dice.com, to find at least 10 IT- related job descriptions. What
common elements do you find among the job descriptions? What is the most unusual characteristic
among them?

The common elements are: good communication skills, efficient in Microsoft office products, ability to
travel, experience of between 2-7 years required, ability to create and understand a SDLC, PMP
certification (project management professional), leadership skills, and I think the most unusual
characteristic is the need to know python.

Chapter 11

1)Search your library’s database and the Web for an article about people who violate their organization’s
policy and are terminated. Did you find many? Why or why not?

Out of the information that I was able to find I noted that most of the sites explained how to fire
somebody that has violated company policy. Aside from that there were some claims of wrongful
termination due to the policy’s being improperly written or policy not focused enough and the person
was not able to understand the policy. I wasn’t able to find many of the actual firing of the employee and
that is because I believe that many companies handle these cases internally and do not want the public
to know what is going on in their company, they do not want to air out their dirty laundry for the public
to see, potential customers will see this as poor judgement and maybe even view the company as a bad
place to do business with.

5) Search the Web for three different employee hiring and termination policies. Review each and look
carefully for inconsistencies. Do each of the policies have sections that address information security
requirements? What clauses should a termination policy contain to prevent disclosure of an
organization’s information? Create your own version of either a hiring policy or a termination policy.

Out of the hiring and termination policies that I reviewed I did not see anywhere where it stated any
information about information security requirements. I did however see information about benefits such
as pay, health and other benefits as well as the out processing procedures. Depending on the company I
believe that they should add a non-disclosure agreement upon termination. Upon termination the
company needs to remove the employee’s privileges to all of the networked devices.

If I had to create a termination policy, I would ensure it was like many others and probably look at some
templates from other companies to get a draft of what the industry is doing and I would add other things
to it as well. I would have an employee sign a non-disclosure agreement as well as a non-compete
agreement upon termination when they are hired and upon termination I would have them review both
the non-disclosure agreement as well as the non-compete agreement

An example of a termination policy would be:

You can either self-terminate your employment or you can allow us to terminate your employment.
Voluntary terminations include resignations, retirement, and the end of a contract. Involuntary
terminations include layoffs and disciplinary action. Employees who want to leave in good standing will
give their boss a minimum of two weeks’ notice.

All employment information including hiring and termination policies shall be maintained in the
company’s employee handbook located in the HR office.

Disciplinary actions could be a result from:

 Reporting for work under the influence of alcohol or controlled substances.

 Possession, use, sale or distribution of controlled substances on company property.
 Theft, both physical and intellectual property
 Engaging in harassing conduct.
 Fabrication of business documents, including resumes and expense reports.
 Excessive absenteeism or tardiness.
 Fighting on premises.
 Purposely damaging or destroying equipment
 Insubordination.
 Gambling on premises.
 Excessive number of write-ups for any disciplinary actions.
 More information will be located in the employee’s handbook located in the HR office.
