Abstract

Calcite and dolomite were differentiated

quantitatively from calcite-dolomite Discover the world's
mixtures and limestones by a method research
based on the quantitative dissolution of 20+ million
calcite in pH 5.85N citrate buffer. The
members
acidity and chelating ability of citrate

soluble Ca and Mg which, in conjunction projects
with a Ca and Mg analysis of the
residue, or a determination of total CO3
in the system, allowed calculation of the
calcite and dolomite contents of the
sample.Analyses of artificially prepared
mixtures and limestone samples gave
essentially the same calcite and
dolomite contents when determined by
the residue and total CO3 methods. The
residue method is to be preferred
because error can be reduced by
determination of the actual Ca:Mg ratio
of the dolomite. However, the total CO3
method would be superior for
heterogeneous systems, such as soils,
since dissolution of dolomite in the
residue by strong acid treatment may
introduce errors from the dissolution of
non-carbonate Ca and Mg minerals.

... For this purpose, the differential

dissolution technique has been attempted
as follows. Petersen and Chesters (1966)
showed that a five-minute treatment of
dolomitic limestones with the citrate-NH 4
OH buffer solution of pH 5.85 dissolved
calcite completely, and then the residual
dolomite was dissolved in 3 M HCl. Zhao et
al. (2009) dissolved the calcite from
dolomitic limestones using a 0.5 M acetic
acid for 4 hours, and then treated the
residual dolomite with 3.4 M acetic acid at
60∞C for 24 hours. ...
... The contribution of dolomite dissolution to
the calcite fraction for the data of Petersen
and Chesters (1966) is about 10% for the
sample having the dolomite/
(calcite+dolomite) weight ratio in the whole
rock of about 0.18. This value of 10% is
considerably higher than the estimated
value of our method. ...
... The contributions of the undesired calcite
to the dolomite fractions for the previous
studies were calculated using the Ca and
Mg concentrations in the dolomite fractions
and assuming the Ca/Mg molar ratio to be 1
in dolomite. The undesired contribution of
calcite to the dolomite fraction as reported
by Petersen and Chesters (1966) is about
6%. As suggested by Zhao et al. (2009),
such contributions were 4 to 5% or 70 to
99% for the whole rock
dolomite/(calcite+dolomite) weight ratios of
0.5-0.6 or 0.01-0.07, ...

dolomite was evaluated. ...

Quantitative determination of calcite and dolomite in soils

July 2006 · European Journal of Soil Science

Soil carbonates were differentiated into calcite and dolomite and determined quantitatively by a method based on their differential
solubilities in 0.30 M Na citrate—0.14 M Na dithionite. Calcite dissolution was favoured by the acidic and chelating nature of the
citrate. Prior destruction of iron-oxide coatings on soil carbonates and/or iron oxide-carbonate complexes by the citrate-dithionite ...
