I, SYNOPSIS

This in v e s tig a tio n *ra.s undertaken to add th e p re v io u s ly u n rep o rted

v a lu e s f o r th e r a t i o s of th e r a te c o n sta n ts f o r v a rio u s two-component

a c r y la te and m e th a cry late copolym erization systems t o th e c o n sid e ra b le

amount o f d a ta a lre a d y re p o rte d f o r o th e r systems and to determ ine i f

p o s s ib le th e e f f e c t o f a homologous s e r ie s o f s u b s titu e n ts on th e r a t i o s

o f th e ra te c o n s ta n ts .

S ix monomers were chosen f o r t h i s stu d y : s ty re n e , m ethyl a c r y la te ,

e th y l a c r y la te , m ethyl m e th a c ry la te , e th y l m e th a cry late , and b u ty l

m e th a c ry la te . A ll but one o f th e f i f t e e n p o s sib le system s were m easurable

by th e method used.

From t h i s in v e s tig a tio n i t was determ ined t h a t th e presence o f a

T his in v e s tig a tio n was undertaken w ith a tw o -fo ld purpose in mind:

1, To add to th e c o n sid e ra b le amount o f d ata a lre a d y e x is tin g f o r o th e r

S ix monomers were chosen f o r t h i s study: s ty re n e , m ethyl a c r y la te ,

e th y l a c r y la te , m ethyl m e th a c ry la te , e th y l m e th a c ry la te , and b u ty l m ethacry­

la te . Styrene was chosen because i t i s more o r l e s s a "stan d ard " o r

"re fe re n ce " monomer and th e v a rio u s a c r y la te s and m e th a ciy la te s were chosen

t o show th e e f f e c t o f in c re a s in g s iz e o f s u b s titu e n t i n th e a c r y la te and

m eth acry late s e r i e s . There a re f i f t e e n d if f e r e n t copolym erization systems

p o s sib le from th e s e s i x monomers. A ll b u t one o f th e f i f t e e n system s were

m easurable by th e method u sed .

t i o n , and reco v erin g th e copolymer f o r a n a ly s is . I f th e r e a c tio n i s

allow ed to proceed to a conversion o f more th a n 10$ th e i n i t i a l monomer

c o n c e n tra tio n cannot be assumed to be c o n stan t d u rin g th e course o f th e

r e a c tio n and th e e q u atio n w i l l not h o ld .

For most o f th e system s in volved, o rd in a ry chem ical a n a ly s is i s

t h e o r e t i c a l l y p o s s ib le b u t i s im p rac tic ab le because o f th e com paratively

sm all d iffe re n c e in percentag e com positions. T h erefo re th e measurement

o f a p h y s ic a l c o n sta n t o f th e copolymer and polymer samples was re s o rte d

to . Of th e p h y s ic a l c o n sta n ts th e r e f r a c tiv e in d ex seemed th e most

prom ising and con seq u en tly was used a s a method o f copolymer a n a ly se s.

A f a c t o r o f g re a t importance in th e measurement o f th e p h y sica l

co n sta n ts o f a polymer i s th e "apparent second-order t r a n s i t i o n p o in t" . ( 7 )

Many supercooled o rg a n ic liq u id s possess d e f i n ite sh o rt tem perature

ranges i n which th e y change to " v itre o u s s o lid s " o r " g la s s e s " . This

t r a n s i t i o n i s e n t i r e l y d i s t i n c t from c r y s t a l l i z a t i o n i n t h a t th e re i s

no d is c o n tin u ity in th e prim ary thermodynamic v a ria b le s and no sudden

s tr u c tu r a l change i s in v o lv e d . On th e o th e r hand such v a ria b le s as

s p e c ific h e a t, c o e f f ic ie n t o f expansion, r a t e o f change o f r e f r a c tiv e

index, e tc . - undergo marked changes in th e course o f a v e ry few d eg rees.

In th e case o f polymer samples t h i s t r a n s i t i o n may be regarded as tk « t

from a g la s s y to a ru b b ery s ta te and i t o ccu rs i n th e same g e n eral

tem perature range a s t h a t in which th e m echanical "so fte n in g p o in t"

occu rs. Above th e "ap p aren t second-order t r a n s i t i o n p o in t" , th e re fra c ­

tiv e index o f a polymer sample i s a fu n c tio n o f th e tem p eratu re, w hile

below th e "apparent second-o rd er t r a n s i t i o n p o in t" , th e r e f r a c tiv e index

i s a fu n c tio n o f both th e tem perature and th e th erm al h is to r y o f th a t

p a r tic u la r polymer sample. Therefore i t was n e ce ssa ry to ta k e th e r e fra c ­

t i v e index measurements a t a tem perature which was above th e h ig h e st

"apparent second-order t r a n s i t i o n point" o f th e polymers in volved.

The "apparent second-order t r a n s i t i o n p o in t" o f s ty re n e , about 8CPC., was

th e h ig h e st and consequently th e r e f r a c tiv e in d ex measurements were made

a t 85°C. At t h i s tem peratu re some o f th e polymers and copolymers (th o se

w ith low er "apparent second-order t r a n s i t i o n p o in ts " ) were q u ite s o ft and

gave c le a r d i s t i n c t l i n e s in th e re fra c to m e te r f i e l d w h ile o th e rs (polym ers

and copolymers o f sty re n e and methyl m e th acry late) so ften ed o n ly s l i g h t l y

and gave r a th e r hazy and in d is tin c t l in e s in th e re fra c to m e te r f i e l d .

in . EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE

A. P re p a ra tio n o f Monomers

A ll o f th e monomers used in t h i s in v e s tig a tio n were re c e iv e d from

th e Rohm & Haas Company. The monomers were p u r if ie d by d i s t i l l a t i o n

under vacuum a t l e a s t fo u r tim es in a sm all Hickman vacuum s t i l l .

The p u rif ie d monomers were sto re d u n t i l used in a r e f r i g e r a to r

a t -5°C.

B. C a lib ra tio n o f Method

For each of th e f i f t e e n systems in v o lv ed , samples o f th e pure

monomers, a 25-75 mol p e rc e n t m ix tu re, a 50-50 mol p ercen t m ix tu re,

and a 75-25 mol percen t m ixture were p rep ared . These samples were

prepared by p ip e ttin g th e monomer in to an empty g la s s re a c tio n tube

which had been cleaned and weighed p re v io u sly . The tube was th en

rew eighed. This p ro cess was rep eated f o r samples co n tain in g more th a n

one monomer. The f i l l e d re a c tio n tu b es were th en cooled to th e tem pera­

tu r e o f liq u id n itro g e n , evacuated and s e a le d . The po ly m erizatio n was

th e n c a r rie d out in a b a th a t 84°C. * 0.5°C . A fte r two weeks th e samples

were removed and in some cases where a d d itio n a l po ly m erizatio n seemed

w arranted, were placed in an oven f o r th re e days a t 120°C. T h is t r e a t ­

ment seemed s u f f ic ie n t to in s u re p r a c tic a l ly complete p o ly m erizatio n .

The sample tu b e s were th en broken open, th e sample recovered and d rie d

under vacuum a t about 71°C <t The vacuum achieved in drying th e polymer and

copolymer samples by a mercury j e t pump was probably o f th e o rd e r o f 0 .0 1

mm. although no p re ssu re measurements were made. W hile th e samples were

being d rie d th e y were weighed d a ily and when th e w eights f o r th re e succes­

s iv e days were id e n tic a l to w ith in 0 .1 mg., th e samples were assumed t o be

o f co n stan t weight* A fte r th e samples had been d rie d to c o n sta n t w eight,

th e y were p ressed in to film s between th e p la te n s of„a h eated h y d ra u lic

p re ss a t about 100°C.

The r e f r a c tiv e in d ic e s o f th e se film s were th e n measured a t 85° 0 .

An Abbe re fra c to m e te r was used. The p ressed film s were placed between

th e prism s of th e re fra c to m e te r so t h a t th e sample made c o n ta c t w ith th e

m easuring prism . Then th e m etal prism housings o r "jaws" were tig h te n e d

c a r e f u lly and th e sample was allow ed to remain in th e re fra c to m e te r u n t i l

tem perature e q u ilib riu m could be assumed and th e sample "w etted" th e prism .

The tim e re q u ire d f o r t h i s was g e n e ra lly tw enty to s ix ty m in u te s. A fte r

t h i s p erio d o f tim e th e r e f r a c tiv e index was measured. The tem perature

was c o n tro lle d to ± 0.2°C .

For each o f th e r e f r a c t iv e index measurements, many re a d in g s were

ta k e n (9 -6 0 ), and th e average v alu e c a lc u la te d . From th e average v alue

th e average e r r o r and th e probable e r r o r were c a lc u la te d acco rd in g to th e


follow ing form ulae ( 8) :

For each o f th e f i f t e e n system s, r e f r a c tiv e index was p lo tte d

a g a in s t mol f r a c tio n o f copolymer. In a l l o f th e se p lo ts "bands" o f

average e r r o r and o f probable e r r o r were p lo tte d r a th e r th a n a s in g le l i n e .

From th e s e p lo ts i t was p o s sib le to determ ine th e com position o f any copoly­

mer sample by measuring i t s re f r a c tiv e index and reading o f f a sm all range

o f com position v alu es from th e cu rv e.

C. E xperim ental D eterm inations

For each o f th e f i f t e e n system s involved (w ith th e ex cep tio n o f th e

m ethyl a c r y la te - b u ty l m eth a cry late system which liras n o t m easurable by

th e method u s e d ), samples o f a 25-75 mol p ercen t m ix tu re , a 50-50 mol

p e rc en t m ixture and a 75-25 mol p ercen t m ixture were p rep ared . These

samples were p rep ared in th e same manner a s were th e c a li b r a tio n sam ples.

D eteim inations o f th e r a t i o s o f th e r a t e c o n s ta n ts were c a r rie d out

a t two d if f e r e n t te m p e ra tu re s, 50°C. and 70°C. In bo th d eterm in atio n s

th e samples were p laced i n co n stan t tem perature b a th s which were con­

t r o l l e d to ± 0 .2 ° C . They were allow ed to rem ain i n th e b a th s u n t i l an

in c re a s e in th e ir v i s c o s i t y could be n o tic e d v i s u a l ly . When t h i s had

o ccu rred th e tu b e s were removed, weighed, and broken open. The co n ten ts

o f each tu b e was poured in to a t e s t tu b e c o n tain in g enough methanol t o

in s u re complete p r e c ip ita tio n o f th e copolymer form ed. In some cases th e

m ethanol was d ilu te d w ith a sm all amount o f d i s t i l l e d w a te r to give more

ra p id p r e c ip ita tio n and a b e t te r form o f th e p r e c ip ita te d polymer. The

polymer was th e n re c o v ere d , d rie d to c o n sta n t w eight u sin g th e same method

a s was used w ith th e c a li b r a t io n sam ples, p ressed in to a film a t about

100°C. and i t s r e f r a c tiv e index measured.

Again as in th e case o f th e c a lib r a tio n sam ples, many read in g s were

tak en and from th e se th e average value was c a lc u la te d . From th e average

probable e r r o r “band" ( th e probable e r r o r was always g r e a te r th a n th e

average e r r o r ) a sm all range o f copolymer com position was re a d o f f from

th e c a lib r a tio n curve. S u b s titu tio n o f th e s e v a lu e s and o f th e v alu es fo r

t.he i n i t i a l com position o f th e monomer m ixture in th e "copolym erization

equation" gave th re e eq u atio n s in two unknowns, r^_ and r 2, f o r each

system a t both te m p e ratu res. These th r e e eq u atio n s when solved gave

th e r-^ and r^ v a lu e s. From th e s e r ^ and r 2 v a lu e s th e "Q" and "e" v alu es

were c a lc u la te d f o r each monomer.

For th e fiv e systems in v o lv in g sty ren e and an o th er monomer th e "Q"

and "e" v alu es were c a lc u la te d u sin g th e a r b i t r a r y v alu es f o r sty re n e o f

Q s 1.00 and e = - 0 .8 ( 6) . S ince th e s e v a lu es a r e a r b i t r a r y any number

o f s ig n if ic a n t fig u r e s n e ce ssa ry can be assumed. The "Q" and "e" v alu es

th u s o b tain ed were used in c ro ss checking th e rem aining a c r y la te and

m eth acry late system s.

In o rd e r th a t any doubt a s to w hether th e copolymer c a li b r a t i o n

sam ples were tr u e copolymers o r a m ix tu re o f th e two d if f e r e n t polymers

m ight be d is p e lle d , th e fo llo w in g experim ents were perform ed.

S e p a ra te s o lu tio n s o f known c o n c e n tra tio n s o f p o ly s ty re n e , poly­

m ethyl m e th a c ry la te , p o ly e th y l m e th a c ry la te and p o ly b u ty l m eth acry late

in benzene were p re p a re d . Measured volumes o f th e s e s o lu tio n s were

mixed and when hom ogeneity was c e r t a i n , polymer film s were c a s t from th e s e

s o lu tio n s . These polym er film samples were d rie d to c o n sta n t w eight and

t h e i r r e f r a c t i v e in d ic e s were measured in th e same manner a s were th e

c a l i b r a t i o n sam ples.

The d a ta f o r th e s e experim ents a re summarized in Table 16 on th e

fo llo w in g page. In a l l c a s e s , i f th e r e f r a c t i v e in d ex o f th e m ix tu res o f

polymers were p lo tte d a g a in s t th e mol f r a c t i o n o f th e sam ples, th e curves

o b ta in e d would no t be id e n t i c a l w ith th e c a li b r a t i o n c u rv e s. Hence th e

copolymer c a li b r a t io n samples must be re g a rd ed a s tr u e copolym ers.

7. EXPERIMENTAL DATA

A» D iscussion

The r e f r a c tiv e in d e x o f th e e x p erim en tal sam ples was u sed to determ ine

t h e i r com positions. In a l l cases a sm all range o f copolym er com positions

was re a d o f f from th e c a l i b r a t i o n curve u sin g th e p ro b a b le e r r o r range o f

th e r e f r a c tiv e index o f th e ex p erim en tal sam ples. S u b s titu tio n o f th e s e

v a lu e s in th e "co p o ly m eriza tio n eq u atio n " (Page 4) gave one e q u a tio n in

two unknowns, r ^ and r 2 , f o r each e x p erim en tal d e te rm in a tio n sam ple. S in ce

th r e e samples o f v a ry in g com positions were run f o r each system a t b o th

te m p e ra tu re s, t h i s p ro ced u re gave th r e e eq u atio n s i n two unknowns, r-j_ and

r 2 , f o r each system a t b o th te m p e ra tu re s . The so lv in g o f th e th r e e p o s s i­

b le p a ir s o f e q u atio n s g iv e s th r e e s e t s o f v a lu e s f o r and ^ f o r each

system a t both te m p e ra tu re s .

Once th e v a lu e s f o r th e r a t i o s o f th e r a t e c o n s ta n ts f o r each system

had been found, th e "Q" and "e" v a lu e s o f th e monomers could be c a lc u la te d

u sin g th e a r b i t r a r y v a lu e s o f Q a 1.000 and e a -0 .S 0 f o r s ty r e n e . Since

th e v a lu e s f o r sty re n e a r e a r b i t r a r y , any number o f s i g n i f ic a n t f ig u r e s

n e c e ssa ry could be assumed. The r e s u l t s o f th e s e c a lc u la tio n s a re g iv en

The e f f e c t o f th e n a tu re o f th e s u b s tit u e n t, however, i s q u ite

s m a ll. From th e s e m easurem ents, i t seems e v id en t t h a t t h i s e f f e c t i s

m easurable a lth o u g h in some c a se s th e d iffe re n c e may be w ith in th e

l i m i t s o f e r r o r o f th e m easurem ents.
