DATE:
AIM: To investigate the effect of exercise on pulse rate
APPARATUS/MATERIALS: 2 test subjects, stop watch
METHOD:
1. Test subjects were allowed to rest for about 10mins.
2. The numbers of pulse beats were counted at 1 minute intervals and the average pulse
count per minute was recorded.
3. The test subject was allowed to stand and step 2 was repeated.
4. Test subjects were allowed to do quick jumping jacks for 3 minutes.
5. Steps 2 was repeated until pulse rate returns to normal.
6. Steps 1-5 was repeated for the second test subject.
7. Results were tabulated and constructed into a suitable graph to compare the results of
both subjects.

DISCUSSION:
Pulse rate is the number of times your arteries create a noticeable “pulse”” due to increase in
blood pressure as a result of your heart contracting. They are factors that affect pulse rate such as
illnesses for eg heart disease, blood pressure, weight, exercise and genetics. While exercising
pulse rate increases so that sufficient blood is the muscles in the body and provide them with
nutrients and oxygen.
Cardiac output is the volume of blood the heart pumps out per minute the equation for this is (Q)
= Stroke volume (SV) x Heart Rate (HR).
Stroke Volume is the volume of blood pumped out of the left ventricle of the heart during
systolic cardiac contraction.
Systolic contraction is the period of contraction of the ventricles of the heart that occurs between
the first and second heart sounds of the cardiac cycle.
By looking on both graphs it can be observed that while the homo sapiens is sitting or standing
there isn’t as much as an increase in pulse rate as during the jumping jacks. Pulse rate has
increase to 169 beats after 2 minutes for the first Homo sapiens and 159 beats after two minutes
in the other.
LIMITATION: the amount of time taken to start and stop the stop watch can affect the accuracy
of the results.
