Introductory Message

For the Facilitator:

Welcome to the English Grade 9 Self-Learning Module on Using words to


express evaluation!

This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and


reviewed by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its
Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A.
Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of Pasig through its mayor,
Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K
to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in
developing this instructional resource.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely: Communication,
Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the module:

This contains helpful tips or strategies that
will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this

EXPECTATIONS

This is your self-instructional learner module in English 9. All the


activities provided in this lesson will help you learn and understand: Using
words to express evaluation.

Specifically, you will learn about the following:

1. Identify the evaluative words in the sentence;


2. Determine the uses of evaluative words; and
3. Use evaluative words appropriately.

This statement is an example of generalization.

LESSON

We use words to describe emotions, to evaluate the worth and quality


of things and processes, and to make judgments about other people’s
behavior. These words are called evaluative language.

For today’s lesson we are going to discuss, Using words to express


evaluation.
In the previous activity, you identified the adjectives as positive or
negative. Those words express judgment. The adjectives - lovely, informative,
restricted, wonderful, and unusual are examples of evaluative vocabulary.
Evaluative vocabulary/language is used to express positive and

Writers use these words to express evaluation.
Evaluation is intended, in simple terms, as ‘the indication that
something is good or bad.’ (https://www.slideserve.com/ervin/evaluative-language)
Evaluative language can express shades of meaning, feeling and
opinion.
Examples:
Great heroes sacrificed their lives to achieve our independence.
Consumers are supportive in local businesses.

In the first sentence, the word heroes is the noun. When asked “What
is your judgment about the heroes?” the answer will be great. Great is the
evaluative word that expresses the judgment on heroes’ behavior.
In the second sentence, the word consumers is the noun. Supportive
is the evaluative word for the noun consumers.

Evaluative language expresses attitudes. There are three sub-types of


attitude: Affect, Judgment and Appreciation.

Examples:
The students are inspired to study our history.
Loving millennials enjoy reading Filipino books.
The people are upset with the terrible news.
Examples of emotions/ feelings:

In texts, language of affect is important because it shows the reader the


emotions of the character.
2. Appreciation
Evaluating the worth and quality of things and processes.

Examples:
President Rodrigo Duterte delivered an inspiring speech.
The tourist visited the most beautiful spot in the Philippines.
We must embrace our unique culture and traditions.
3. Judgment
Describing the moral or legal behavior of someone.

Examples:
Jose Rizal is a good writer.
It is expected to sing correctly when the national anthem is played.
The brave soldiers protect our land.
