o one would ever think a woman would give up the chance to be a leading Bollywood actress to be a doctor. But that is precisely what Sona Patel did before enrolling in medical school at Ross University in 1998. Where many women would have simply used their beauty to get what they wanted out of life, Dr. Patel decided there was more to life than being a pretty face. She graduated at the top of her class in 2002. When Dr. Patel decided to pursue the field of medical marijuana, she knew it would certainly be controversial. Greatness is rarely if ever achieved without struggle and controversy says Dr Patel, CEO and Founder of Doc420. It was only after she gained extensive knowledge regarding medical marijuana research, including clinical trials, benefits, adverse effects, and even the law and politics surrounding its use that she decided to pursue this field of medicine. However, no amount of research could have prepared her for what she was about to discover. The results were amazing. Patients who were taking prescription the call to serve her community was too strong and instead of signing a contract to star in a Bollywood film, she continued to model during the day and concentrated on medical school at night. Like every student struggling to make it through, there were many nights where she didnt sleep. Having desired to be a doctor since she was five, Dr. Patel was relentless in her studies. She even found herself walking to a classroom at 8 a.m. to take a test which she spent only a few hours studying for because she had to work. But, she still got an A. She still passed all of her courses with flying colors, graduating at the top of her class. She devotes herself to studying medicine and bettering her patients lives. Many are shocked to find that Dr. Patel does not wear a wedding band nor does she have a significant other. She is married to her work.

pills just to maintain their medical conditions were all of sudden actually improving! She began to gradually incorporate more medical marijuana into her practice. Time and time again the benefits I saw in my patients were astounding. Eventually I got to a point where prescribing conventional medications (pills) did not feel right to me anymore, Dr. Patel said. If youre one of millions of people who sneer at the thought of the use of medical marijuana, then think about this. Some of the side effects of a few commonly prescribed pain killers: stomach bleeding, heart attack, stroke, nausea, constipation, dizziness, headache, drowsiness, and yes, even death. Dr. Patels clinical experience has shown that long-term and even daily marijuana use can be a safe and effective treatment for a wide range of diseases. Dr. Patels clinical experience has found only a very minimal impairment in memory and learning among long-term marijuana users.

some people think that marijuana is highly addictive. this is also a myth. - Dr. Patel

You might be mesmerized by Dr. Patels beautiful features but look further and you can see she is still a caring doctor under all that glamour. Her care and compassion for her patients is part of the reason she began researching medical marijuana in the first place. Is she worried about being too controversial of a doctor? No. To her, the benefit of having patients who can live without the side effects of commonly prescribed medications is her reward. I personally am not worried about the controversy, Dr. Patel says. I do my research, I follow the legal guidelines and requirements for a medical doctor recommending medical marijuana. Before Ross University, Dr. Patel was an Indian dancer and a model. In fact, Super Model India search had crowned her Super Model India and Miss Photogenic. When she was only 17-years-old, she traveled to India to give acting a chance. But

Im in a relationship with my offices, Dr. Patel says. I cant find a man who can accept how hard I work. Its a tough world out there for a business woman. Being single doesnt mean she shies away from sex talk as long as it has to do with the medicine she prescribes. According to Dr. Patel, medical marijuana can heighten your sexual senses, relax you and make you feel hyper connected. There are also physiological effects from medical marijuana like increased heart rate, changes in blood flow and respiration that can affect sexuality Dr. Patel explains. Dr. Patel is quick to make sure people know the facts about medical marijuana and its affects. Like the myth that marijuana can cause infertility in both men and women and that marijuana decreases sexual development in adolescents or produces feminine characteristics in males and masculine characteristics in females. >> stOry cOntinues On PG.8

June 2011 - 7

Dr. Patel says this is just a myth and in actuality, there is no evidence that marijuana causes infertility in men or women. In animal studies, high doses of THC diminish the production of some sex hormones and can impair reproduction. However, most studies of humans have found that marijuana has no impact of sex hormones. In those studies showing an impact, it is modest, temporary, and of no apparent consequence for reproduction. There is no scientific evidence that marijuana delays adolescent sexual development, that it has a feminizing effect on males, or a masculinizing effect on females. Another myth is that marijuana kills brain cells and that used over time, marijuana permanently alters brain structure and function, causing memory loss, cognitive impairment, personality deterioration, and reduced productivity. Dr. Patel stresses that this is just a myth. None of the medical tests currently used to detect brain damage in humans have found harm from marijuana, even from long term highdose use. The claim that marijuana kills brain cells is based on a speculative report dating back a quarter of a century that has never been supported by any scientific study. Some people think that marijuana is highly addictive. This is also a myth. Dr. Patel stresses that most people who smoke marijuana smoke it only occasionally. A small minority of Americans - less than 1 percent - smoke marijuana on a daily basis. In addition, some people who smoke marijuana heavily and frequently stop without difficulty. Marijuana does not cause physical dependence. If people experience withdrawal symptoms at all, they are remarkably mild. Often people who do not know her background get confused and wonder if that is really her in those ads. Yes. Its her. It is one of the most commonly asked questions right up there with why are you single? She wears heels to work, does her own hair and make-up and has not stopped being glamorous just because she wears a lab coat. Even the dress she was wearing during this interview was designed by her and custom made by her tailor. Dr. Patel breaks every stereotype of the traditional doctor. Shes beautiful, intelligent, compassionate, and artistic. Her latest hobbies include cooking gourmet meals. You may even find her picking up a paintbrush and working on her oil painting. Her creativity is clearly evident from all her lavishly decorated offices which she did herself.

I like to stay as well rounded as possible, Dr. Patel explains. Its so easy to get consumed in business and medicine. Dr. Patel is truly devoted to her patients. If you have any questions for the doctor, you can reach her via her facebook which she responds to herself (facebook.com/sonapatelmd). She treats patients of all ages for many different illnesses, with impressive results. Patients come into her office ranging in ages from 18 to 90 seeking relief from the use of medical marijuana, which comes in a surprising variety of forms; sodas, ice cream, creams, frozen dinners and even concentrated pill form. There are many different medical conditions that can qualify patients, Dr. Patel explains. Some of the medical conditions are Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS), HIv Infection Anorexia, Cachexia, Arthritis, Cancer, Chronic Pain, Glaucoma, Migraine Headaches Or Chronic Headaches, Persistent Muscle Spasms, Multiple Sclerosis, Seizures and Epilepsy, Severe Nausea, ADD, ADHD, Depression, Anxiety, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Insomnia, PMS Symptoms, Painful Periods, Hepatitis C, Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBS), Colitis (Chrons Disease or Ulcerative Colitis), Urinary Incontinence, Chronic Abdominal Pain, Chronic Pelvic Pain, Neuropathy, Neuralgia, Chronic Low Back Pain, Asthma, Parkinsons Disease, Wasting Syndrome, and many others. visit Dr. Patels website at: www.doc420.com Find answers to all your questions in Dr. Patels new book, A Comprehensive Guide to Medical Marijuana, available on her website at www.doc420.com visit one of Dr. Patels three locations for a FREE consultation: Hollywood: 4864 Melrose Ave. Los Angeles, CA 90029 (818) 794-9269 Las vegas: 4955 S Durango Dr #116 Las vegas, Nv 89113 (702) 997-3957 Los Angeles: 314 Florence Ave. Los Angeles, CA 90003 (818) 794 9269

chaka Khan Honored with Walk of Fame Star

Stevie Wonder is among the special guests who were on hand to honor the R&B singer in Hollywood.
Chaka Khan received the 2,440th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame last month, a milestone that honors a rhythm and blues singing career of more than 40 years. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce bestowed on Khan, a 10-time Grammy Award winner, the star in the category of recording. The Walk of Fame star is located at 6623 Hollywood Blvd. in front of My Studio Nightclub. Colleagues including fellow R&B and soul singer, Stevie Wonder, and music producer, Benny Medina, were on hand to celebrate the accomplishment with Khan. She earned her first hit while frontwoman for Rufus with Tell Me Something Good, written by Stevie Wonder. It won the group a Grammy in 1975 as the best R&B vocal performance by a duo, group or chorus. Born Yvette Marie Stevens on March 23, 1953 in Chicago, she was given the name Chaka Adunne Aduffe Hoodarhi Karifi by an African shaman. She became Chaka Khan in 1970 when she married Indian bassist Hassan Khan. Khan began her singing career by forming the all-female vocal group the Crystalettes when she was 11-years-old. Khans solo debut album, Chaka was released in 1978 and featured the crossover disco hit, Im Every Woman, whose single topped the U.S. R&B charts. Khans other No. 1 singles are What Cha Gonna Do for Me; I Feel For You; This is My Night; Aint Nobody; Love You All My Lifetime; Never Miss the Water; and Disrespectful. Khans most recent album, Funk This, released in 2007, brought her a Grammy for best R&B album.

or an up and coming talent in Hollywood, it takes persistence, patience, and pizzazz. At an early age, Lisa Tucker has it. Youll remember, the stunning beauty of Latin descent, as one of the finalist from Season Five of American Idol. She was introduced to audiences and to feisty former judge Simon Cowell. He once said of her, Lisa is the best 16 year old that ever auditioned for the show. Over the last few years, shes worked on Nickolodeans Zoey 101, The OC, 90210, and BETs The Game. Her impressive resume is leading her into the big time and she shows no signs of slowing down. Shes stepped into the role of Gretta, a new witch in town ready to take on revenge for the death of the warlock brother and father, 10 - Holl ywood weekl y

on the CW hit show, The vampire Diaries. Lisa says of the show, I wasnt sure how the cast was going to be at first, but once I got there, it was so exciting. The shows cult following will have an impact on Lisas blossoming career. Aside from the show, she just signed a deal with Ne-Yos record label, Compound Entertainment. She spent time in London working on music for the album, taking her to her second passion, which is music. Shes skilled at balancing both television and film-she recently wrapped her first feature, Dreams, starring Geoffrey Owens, Terri J. vaughn, and Tommy Ford.

irst there was The Sopranos who took us into the lives of the mob scene that existed amongst the suburban streets of New Jersey now its time for some Greek mafia wars to hit the streets. This time its in a nearby New York suburb Astoria. Gearing up for production, Astoria is set to be a one-hour dark drama series created and written by Theo Nicholas Pagones. Its based on the ongoing sagas that exist in the Antonopoulos Family. Greek and Albanian mafia families fight it out for control of the vast underground drug cartel. The story is set in Astoria, New York and links to the ancient city of Athens, Greece. As in all mafia related series there must be a Godfather role. The cast of Astoria will include actor Theo Pagones who plays Greek mob boss Aristotle Antonopoulos soon to be known as the Greek Godfather. I have played many tough guy roles in my life, but my ultimate dream as an actor was always to play a powerful role that I can identify and connect with and passionately portray in a television series...Astoria, is the series and Aristotle Antonopoulos is that role, says Pagones. Theo Pagones is a very diverse actor. He began his acting career at an early age 19, doing repertory theater in Seattle,

Washington. After leaving Seattle, Pagones gradually worked his way south. He studied and graduated from the prestigious American conservatory Theater in San Francisco, California. Pagones has starred and co-starred in numerous films and has guest starred in multiple roles for television and national commercials. He has worked with many actors, most notably in a powerful performance opposite Robert DeNiro and Cuba Gooding Jr. in the movie Men of Honor. Soon thereafter Pagones starred, wrote, and produced the Independent film titled Runners. Producing Astoria in association with Pagones is Casino Jack, xXx and Chronicles of Riddick producer George Zakk. Also attached is Golf in the Kingdom executive producer George Stephanopoulos. With Astoria there is Greek hospitality of a different sort and that it is murder-based makes for an unexpected drama series, said Stephanopoulos when asked about the Astoria series. Also joining the Greek mob saga, are Directors of Bereavement and Run It, brother team, Evangelos and George Giovanis. Astoria, a Big Greek Films production, is set to begin filming on location in New York and Athens in September 2011. June 2011 - 13

begins, the story is invented and re-invented every year as an elite team of dynamic individuals and the city of Cannes prepare to greet artists and professionals from around the world. The 64th Festival de Cannes was no different with Woody Allens Midnight in Paris opening

the festival and The Beloved by Christophe Honore bringing it to a close. This year proved to be the year for the US box office. With The Tree of Life receiving the Palme dOr Award it has already hit all time highs at the box office with it opening only in 4 theatres. The Tree of Life has acclaimed stars like Sean Penn and Brad Pitt. After Fahrenheit 9/11 in 2004, this is the first US film to have received the biggest Cannes honor. The movie will be released in 14 more theaters early June and it will see a nationwide release on July 1st. As always, Cannes deployed its charm, its mysteries and traditions. With fifty films in the Official Selection, dozens of guests every day, hundreds of screenings and thousands of film-buffs swarming the streets excellence in filmmaking was prominently in the air. But as all good things do the festival came to an end, so we say au revoir, until next year!

Today you can find Pilates in the news and spreading through the wave of popularity like never before. Why? Because todays health-conscious public is discovering what dancers, athletes and rehabilitation therapists have known for decades: that the results of Pilates conditioning are immediate and noticeable. Just like most forms of disciplined exercise regime, Pilates has been proven to be mentally beneficial as well as physically. It is being appropriately referred to as a form of active yoga. For us body-conscious Southern Californians, there are tales of dramatic changes in body mass and tone. Reports of dropping a full size or two in as little as six weeks -- without sacrificing any of the major food groups. Equally interesting are the tales of slenderized hips, shapely calves, leaner thighs, and inevitably, tighter abs. Because of Pilates emphasis on proper posture, body alignment, and constant elongation, there are even reports of height gains -- up to a full inch. Inspired by claims of greater strength, flexibility, and mental balance, I was determined to give Pilates a try. Whatever you do, Pilates will teach you to do it better. Its the perfect compliment to any activity, or on its own, because it teaches efficiency of movement, says Amy Landon, Pilates instructor at Yoga Works Costa Mesa, CA.

variety of bars, pulley, and strap attachments enable you to execute the movements lying down, sitting, kneeling, or standing. The degree of resistance for strength conditioning is determined by the number of springs attached for any given series of exercises. An instructor is there to lead you to your next exercise and roams the class constantly monitoring students movements while offering gentle reminders like shoulders down, or engage your abdominals, or simply breathe. Theres never the dullness that comes with doing the same repetitive routine in a typical gym setting. The environment should be calm yet charged with concentrated energy. Your program changes constantly. Different equipment is introduced, or more advanced variations of already-learned exercises can be added. So youre always learning new movements and working different muscle groups.

Inas Anis, N.P.
BY: JENNY WERTH some drops from that fountain. Living in Los Angeles made it easy to choose from the overwhelming number of laser specialists. Right off trendy Montana Avenue in Santa Monica is the Laser Skin Medical Cosmetics practice owned and ran by Inas Anis, N.P. Shes a guru in anti-aging and womens health whose been performing a wide variety of medical cosmetic procedures since 2003. She diagnoses and treats any kind of cosmetic procedure. Shes also licensed to do all laser procedure injections and can assist with minor surgeries as well. Ive been consistent with keeping up with the latest lasers and procedures and have integrated my own procedures to accomplish optimum results through lasers and injections, Anis explains. But what makes her a more comfortable specialist from other practitioners in larger corporate offices is her attention to personal care and service to not only beauty and health but also to the patient as a whole. Her office offers a warm setting and environment complete with a soothing fountain and cozy atmosphere. I customize each procedure to the patients needs and desires. I look at the patient as a comprehensive whole. I do all the procedure so the patient receives consistent personal care and feels comfortable. (They) never feel as though they are being put through an assembly line. It seems she thought of everything to make her patients feel as relaxed as possible. So, its really no wonder Anis and many of her patients establish very personal and lasting relationships. Within minutes, we were chatting away like two old friends. Always a good thing when youre about to experience something youve never been through before. Like many patients I had a list of questions (you should always have a list of your concerns before agreeing to any procedure). Im happy to share my experience with you, along with my questions and her answers with all the thousands of other people out there who are seeking the most effective and safe way to restore some of our youthful vitality. Following the Q & A youll find my own experience with the pixel! henever summer rolled around as a teenager and well into my 20s, I was a staple at the beach. There Id lounge in my beach chair with my oversized multi-colored beach towel; surrounded by the essentials. These included a few beauty magazines, dark tanning oil or simply baby oil, radio, cigarettes and an enormous Big Gulp. Life on Pacific Beach in San Diego was mellow, invigorating and rarely too hot to have to hassle with banging an umbrella into the sand. My mother always warned me to never burn my face, to always wear sunscreen, and to never, absolutely never use baby oil as a tanning lotion. Did I listen? No. Do the majority of SoCal girls raised near the beach listen to the advice of their cautious mothers? If they did, we wouldnt all be running around searching in earnest for the fountain of youth. Fast-forward 15-years and Im now the average woman in her mid-30s who looks in the mirror and wonders exactly which second degree burn on her face created the newest wrinkle, uneven skin tone, redness around the nose and (gasp!) much noticeably larger pores! This was simply unacceptable. Age gracefully? Not when theres laser technology around zapping skin back to that of a babys behind. Anyone who hasnt been living under a rock in the last decade is to some degree aware that laser skin resurfacing such as chemical peels and microdermabrasion are available. And those folks who have checked into them have most probably found that theyve been applauded for their ability to restore a more youthful appearance to sun-damaged and wrinkled skin. And while these methods do often yield excellent results, they also require significant downtime. Long periods of staying indoors with absolutely no sun exposure is simply not a feasible option for many working and active patients. And the grueling work of keeping clean bandages applied to your face? No thanks. But most importantly, the results arent nearly as impressive as what the Pixel Skin Resurfacing affords. As society fights harder for that elusive fountain of youth, procedures such as the Pixel are delivering 34 - Holl ywood weekl y

THE SOLUTION FOR INCREDIBLE SKIN

Q & A with Inas Anis, N.P. Laser Skin Medical Cosmetics offers many personal skin care options for men and women. 1610 Montana Ave. #A, Santa Monica 310-806-0959 www.skinlaser.la laserbyinas@yahoo.com Q: Whats the difference between a pixel and a photofacial? A: A photofacial is not as aggressive as a pixel. Its mainly used as a refresher for some rejuvenation and to bring spots closer to the surface. I like to use a pixel and a photofacial in combination to achieve optimal results. This helps with spots, the tightening of wrinkles, and collagen stimulation all in the same treatment. I also do a chemical peel along with the pixel and photofacial if needed. That is more superficial, but works on fine lines and the topical layer of the skin. Q: What can a patient expect after the treatment? A: With each pixel treatment a patient can expect results that continue to work and get better. Pixel is a resurfacing of the skin that works like a pixel in a camera, it targets every other cell while leaving the good skin cells intact. The resurfacing of the skin allows for collagen stimulation which increases elasticity, skin tightening and diminished wrinkles. Resurfacing leaves your skin refreshed by removing top layers of skin and deeper layers as well. Depending on your level of scars and wrinkles, it can go to even deeper layers to achieve an even more aggressive treatment. Q: How will your skin feel after the procedure? A: With each treatment patients feel refreshed, new baby like skin, along with skin tightening and diminished wrinkles. Each treatment is fighting and meeting the aging clock. It is refreshing as well as antiaging. And, in time patients also need to use less Botox and fillers. And when used in combination, fillers make the effects of Botox last longer. Patients will also see sun damage and years of other damage diminishing to reveal younger looking skin that continues to keep working. Q: How many treatments does the average patient need? A: How may treatments one needs depends on their age. However, each

treatment continuously works for up to a year. To achieve younger looking skin, its optimal to have three to five procedures as soon as possible between three to six weeks. Then, maintenance can be achieved with one treatment every 3 to 4 months to continuously resurface and stimulate collagen for younger looking skin. **Heres the whole truth and nothing but the truth about my pixel adventure!** My Pixel Experience: Truly the no pain, no gain rule applies here! The procedure wasnt so bad at first, then became more painful- but certainly bearable. It seems to depend on the patient; some report no pain, others experience only mild discomfort, while other say it feels like a rubber band hitting your face over and over. However, you can opt for a numbing cream to be applied before you begin the procedure (I did), and/or take pain medications to reduce the discomfort. The Week Following My Pixel: You can look forward to immediate results with pixel skin resurfacing, although your skin will probably be red and tender for a few hours after treatment. For two days following the procedure, my skin felt tight. Then on about the third day my dead skin began to flake and peel off. This is proof that new skin is replacing the dead tissue, and a sign that the healing is underway. Youll notice the new skin is as soft as a babys behind. Its truly remarkable. To keep the skin comfortable and constantly moisturized, I just kept applying vaseline. Sure, I looked like a lizard, but no one said a word- this is normal stuff in LA. Just throw on a hat. By day five most of the dead skin has peeled off, but, as instructed, I waited to exfoliate whatever was still hanging

around until day seven. When it was all over, my new skin felt and looked radiant, practically glowing. It also dramatically reduced the size of my large pores (thrilling)! It did diminish some fine lines, and helped reduce the appearance of redness around my nose and the brown spots on my cheeks. Oh, as for that fountain of youth? Well, Im betting on the laser of truth. The Price for Beauty? Anis offers a free consultation with each patient to determine their individual needs. Prices arent cheap for any cosmetic procedure. But then again, neither are skin care creams, hydrators, serums, masks, peels, facials, moisturizers, psychiatrists for aging-anxiety, etc.. etc.. More Information About Pixel: Pixel skin resurfacing involves a series of laser pulses that create tiny ablative zones which remove the epidermis and upper dermis. This in turn actually triggers your bodys natural healing process that stimulates the growth of new, healthy tissue. Basically, it aids to stimulate collagen production for the long-term. Best yet, studies say that even though youll see results right away, you can also expect to enjoy ongoing results for several months after treatment. Skin cells will continue to reproduce at a rapid rate because the dermis has been stimulated at a deeper level. This means your skin will become tighter, smoother and more toned for the weeks and months after your procedure.

t was May 8th, Mothers Day 2011 and business as usual for Panache Images Modeling Troupe. This date marked the 18th annual Mothers Day Fashion Drama performed by the troupe, and the theme, Circus of Fashion, had the audience buzzing in anticipation of what was to come. Following last years outstanding production of The Heist, many came believing that they had already seen the best the troupe could offer, but they left in awe, amazed that Panache had found another rung on the ladder, and taken their production to yet, another level. Circus of Fashion was all it promised to be and more. From the moment audience began arriving at the beautiful Torrance Marriott Hotel, they knew that they were about to experience something special. And once they entered the Grand Ballroom, it was obvious that Panache had more in store than just a fashion show. True to the theme, the ballroom was resplendent with the colorful draping of a big top circus and a center stage!

pushed the drama envelope, but by the audience response, it was well received. Without a doubt, this show set the bar at a level that will make next years show a challenge, but one that we are definitely up for! With their 18th annual Mothers Day performance behind them, the troupe will round out the year fulfilling obligations to organizations that hire the group as entertainment for various functions. When asked about next years show, Yolanda Taylor, writer and commentator for the troupe, was reluctant to reveal the theme, but with 17 years under their belt, if they continue to hold true to their unique display of fashion and their flair for the dramatic, once again the result will be creative genius! For more information about the troupe email panacheimages@gmail.com or call (310) 677-1238

Once Yolanda Taylor, The Taylor-Made Commentator, took to the stage, she introduced a witty story-line that wove together a frustrated designer, convincingly played by Larry Bobcat Jeffries, and a conniving Ringmaster, played by Taylor herself. The audience found much to laugh about as they witnessed the antics of Circus Madame Ezmiralda and Monica the design assistant, played by Triana Hill and Doretta Quarles. In true Circus fashion, the audience was intermittently entertained with juggling, acrobats, a unicyclist, and sizzling dance numbers by Babylon Mood. But by all accounts, the Human Carousel of fashion was the hit of the afternoon, brilliantly choreographed by ProducerDirector, Eric E-Jay Lindsey. The fashion drama was not without fashion, as the designs of Petro Montegos and Francisco Saray punctuated the performance, effectively rolling Circus and Fashion into one! Special recognition also goes to Honee Dipp Collection, Dicker & Dicker of Beverly Hills, Ashley Stewart, Windsor Fashions, and The Costume Connection for their very special affects. Q. A.

Why did you become a matchmaker? Did you do any interesting jobs before you became a matchmaker? I have a long past of working with start-up companies. It was that history that got me involved in the industry, but it was the process of helping people find their true loves that made me stay in the industry.

I started TheJMom.com with my sister Brad eisenberg with sister danielle Danielle after and mother Barbara our mother had asked numerous times to look at my online dating profile and search the site to see if she could find the perfect girl for me. I finally gave in and let her go to town, searching the site as she pleased. Two hours later, I came back and found her still completely engaged with the computer, searching with a list of 10 different girls for me to contact. She had put more effort and time into the process than I could or ever would, and she enjoyed doing it. That was when we realized there needs to be a website for parents like our mother. Ive had a lot of interesting jobs in my life. Ive worked for HBO, sold real estate, worked for a facebook application called Where Ive Been.com and if you want to go waaay back to my first job I was a sandwich artist at subway at the ripe age of 15. Ive always liked helping and being around people so starting this site was a natural fit.

Louie Felix Q.

What would you say your demographic is/ specialty?

A. I dont think their is a demographic or specialty for

people who want to find someone they are compatible with. Then again, I guess that would actually be the demographic. We only work with people who are serious and ready to meet someone to spend the rest of their lives with.

expectations are so high. The men want younger, drop dead gorgeous women and the women are extremely concerned with the mans income, car and status. Do you think it is hard to be single in LA? Do you have any advice for single people in LA? I believe that people make it more difficult than it actually is. Being one of the largest cities in the country means unlimited options for most singles. With a larger amount of options, people tend to be waiting for something better to come along. Sometimes, in smaller communities, when singles know they are staying in that location and know the opportunities that are afforded them, it makes the decision easier than for someone in a larger community who will never know EvERY opportunity that they have. My advice to singles in Los Angeles is not rush any decision. If you feel that their is a chance at compatibility combined with chemistry, just relax and see where things take you. Dont overthink it. www.elitematchmaking.com

Q. Is it hard to fix up people in Los Angeles? A. It can be very challenging in this town because the Q. A.

important but can only take you so far. Once the new relationship feelings wear off I believe is when you really start to fall in love.

Q. Do you believe in love at first sight? A. I believe in lust at first sight. Attraction is very Q. A.

What is your favorite success story/ couple you fixed up? Do you know the total amount of couples you fixed up? I know weve generated quite a few dates but no proposals yet. We launched in late November and have new members joining daily. I expect we will get our first marriage testimonial within the next few months. www.TheJMom.com

pay the bills, and the whole family became accustomed to the constant phone calls from bill collectors. The deep financial burden often left her mother crying behind closed doors. Cris recalls that some days there was no food on the table. I told my mom (that) someday I will help you I will make this house pretty. The beauty is that Cris words came true. Cris mother only had a fifth-grade education, while Cris father, a transient who was in-and-out of her life, also had speech impairment. So, Cris took control and decided to make life better for them all. She attended school during the day and took a part-time job in the evenings so she could help her mother pay the bills. Eventually, she decided to drop out of school and work full-time in order to fulfill her dream of making their home pretty.

reshinda Clark is a survivor. A heroine really. The owner and director of House 2 Home Enterprises, a non-profit organization which is a transitional living home, has been overcoming obstacles and challenges her whole life. Her story begins as a four-year-old who couldnt speak. Concerned, her mother took her to a specialist who diagnosed her as having a lazy brain, also known as the lazy brain syndrome. At the age of seven, Creshinda was still struggling; unable to spell her name or put numbers together, she often shuttered and was teased in school. She remained mute all of her childhood life due to the torment of her peers along with her innate shyness and inability to focus.

Some days there was no food on the table, I told my mom, someday I will help you,

Cris, as she is fondly called, grew up in South Los Angeles among horrible conditions and heart-wrenching situations that would challenge the strongest of adults. When she was only twelve-years-old, her mothers boyfriend moved in with Cris, her mother and her two younger sisters. Her mothers boyfriend was a former prison system inmate who began to molest Cris and one of her younger sisters for more than five years. This misery became Cris deep, dark secret for years. Eventually, her mother left the boyfriend, and they moved out. However, Cris still kept the abuse to herself. Their next move was into a neighborhood where her families home was the ugliest on the block. Cris was understandably hurt and ashamed of her poor living conditions. And then there were the friends who laughed and teased her family. Her mother struggled to

Although obstacles were ever-present in Cris life, she was determined to meet every one of them head-on. She self-taught herself through a trade course for architect draftsman and eventually went through the CETA Program, Urban League, and Job Corp. In time she decided to move in with her aunt who taught her the value of working hard and saving money in order to establish good credit. Finally things were beginning to turn around. Thanks to her diversified skills and lovely personality, Cris found jobs easily. She worked with the Los Angeles Police Departments S.W. Division, and the D.A.s office as a clerk, a UPS driver, and part-time as a longshoreman, eventually becoming a fulltime longshoreman marine clerk. In time, Cris took a course in Real Estate Investment and got excited when a cousin told her, you make too much money not to invest! Excited, she invested and opened a Sober Living Home, but wasnt crazy about it because the residents voluntarily continued to drink, so Cris turned it into a Transitional Living House For Mentally Ill Women. A move that has proven to be sprinkled with love and happiness for Cris. I Love It! Why? Because I can relate just hearing their stories. It warms my heart, says Cris. I have people that come from all walks of life, and people ask me, arent you afraid of them? My answer is no. They just need support. I take my salary and clothe them, feed them, assist with their rent, take them to therapy, and to the emergency room for medical treatment. The courts have suggested that I become a conservator, but the residents need more. All I can offer them is from the T.v. to the bed. They need on-site staff, treatment, and activities they can be involved in Cris explains. Cris often even takes her clients to the movies, but its a lot of hard work. I have a ten year old child myself, she says. At times people tell me to give it up, but my heart is in it too deep to abandon them. When some of the clients transition out to live on their own, I receive calls of thanks and their appreciation for all of my help. I get calls from parents as well thanking me for all I have done, and that warms my heart. Someday I would like to have a Black Tie Fundraiser for our center, so that we can have a home-like atmosphere with on-site staff, treatment and therapy rooms, where they can be taught hygiene and grooming, and just basic life skills. So when they are able to live on their own again they can lead a productive life. It can be turned around, Cris says. And shes the proof. As I write Cris story I cant help but feel her compassion for Transitional Living, for I myself am a resident of House 2 Home Transitional Living. I met Cris eight-months-ago when I came to House 2 Home after being discharged from a hospital where I was admitted for Major Depression, which I was diagnosed with some years ago. I had lost the will

to live after my mother passed three-years-ago, and the depression got worse, so when I lost my job, I thought about ending my life and entered the hospital to get help. (Thats) when I happened to notice a flyer with the picture of House 2 Home Transitional Living For Women and all of its information on it. I called Cris when I was discharged and the rest is history. Living here has given me the will to live again, renewed energy, and a whole new outlook on life. I too, will be transitioning on my own soon, and I have Cris to thank for helping me get my life back together. I hope and pray that she receives all the help she needs, so that her vision of expanding House 2 Home Transitional Living can reach out to more women in the community. A beautiful vision that surely will change the lives of many more women in the future.

n the male-dominated car dealership industry, one woman stands out as bright as one of the freshly waxed vehicles on her lot. Jenell Ross is the CEO of the popular Dayton, Ohio dealership thats still going strong since her father opened it in 1974. At only 27-years-old Jenell took over the day-to-day operations of the popular dealership and has kept going ever since. In fact, her father was the first African-American to own a Mercedes-Benz dealership and currently Jenell Ross is the only African-American female to own a Mercedes-Benz and Buick-GMC dealership in the entire country! Its a leadership role that Jenell takes very seriously. I had an opportunity to work with both of my parents to learn the business, when my father passed I was thrown into the day-today leadership role, Jenell explains. I had to react very quickly and have been very fortunate to have many seasoned leaders on the staff. Clearly, the staff at her dealership has found reason to stay so loyal to their job. Its customary to have a lot of turn over in this business but many of her staff have remained. We are not just trying to sell

one and Jenell is always sure to have an open mind. In fact, she thrives on the unpredictable nature of the industry. Thats what I like about it (the dealership), no two days are ever the same, ever. Indeed, the nature of the business keeps her on her feet. And her mom shared this industry-norm with Jenell a long time ago. In particular her mom told her that you dont have to be flexible, you have to be elastic. You have to be able to move and bend. Move, bend and be at the top of your game in a maledominated industry. Jenell recalls that when she first started attending industry meetings, a lot of the audience figured she was there as a manufactures representative or travel service. There obviously arent a lot of young, African-American women in these meetings. So I would have fun with it, and I still do. I dont let that detour me, she says. Additionally, the commitment of her family in the community has been a staple for over 37-years now. As a result, folks are accustomed to the dealership and its highstandard of operation.

and service (customers) vehicles we are also very active in the community, and customer service has always been a top priority for us, Jenell says. Its not easy to buy a car; Jenell knows all the concerns a customer has before selecting the right car for their needs. Thats why she runs a professional, yet laid-back dealership that never minimizes a customers concerns or forces them to feel rushed when shopping for a vehicle. In fact, Jenell prides herself on maintaining a business that is on-top of all the newest technology and resources available. She can often be found attending various training classes and webinars along with her staff. You have to make sure that you are providing (the staff) with the right resources so they can best do their job. Especially with technology- the learning ball continues to turn. Staying abreast of new technology is Jenells focus. Our technicians are constantly having to go to school for new models so they know how to service them. Indeed, her parents taught her the business well. I had an opportunity to work with both of my parents in regard to learning the business. And she also was able to embrace their words of wisdom; especially those of her late father. The one thing that I remember him always saying is that if you think you know everything and have learned everything, its not possible. There is always something else for you to learn. The car industry is an ever changing 46 - Holl ywood weekl y

The dealership is certainly hard-to-miss with three buildings on its nine acres lot. There is a building for Mercedes-Benz, Buick-GMC and used vehicles. In fact, presently the Mercedes-Benz dealership is undergoing a major renovation; and Buick-GMC is next up on the list for a renovation as well. Jenell says the dealership also has a lot of customers that come in from out of state; it certainly helps that they ship cars everywhere in the nation. With such superior service, its natural to feel the strain of the long days. But while Jenell admittedly recognizes how time consuming and demanding the business can be, she also enjoys the challenge. If its something you truly enjoy, you wont see it that way. She also has some supportive advice for any woman who dreams of owning their own dealership one day. I would definitely say to go for it, because we definitely need more women in our industry, and women have more influence on the buying decision than most people think. She also maintains that there are many more opportunities in the business today than ever before. Naturally, we are a society dependent on cars and the freedom they allow Americans to enjoy. Lucky for us, dealerships like Jenell Ross still exist. Bob Ross Mercedes-Benz is located at 85 Loop Road, Centerville, Ohio, 45459. Call (888)-871-9950 or (937)-4332698. www.ROSSMB.com
