About this manual

The purpose of this manual is to present the descriptions and drawings required to install
the Simrad SR70 Catch Monitoring Receiver.

Target audience
The manual is intended for technical personnel; such as skilled shipyard workers,
electricians, qualified engineers and naval architects. It is assumed that you understand
the general principles of maritime electronic equipment. You must also be familiar with
the installation of electronic and mechanical products. You are expected to have basic
mechanical skills and familiarity with handling of sensitive electronic equipment.

Installation instructions and drawings

The information in this document must be regarded as general guidelines and
recommendations only. The installation shipyard must design and manufacture
installation hardware to fit each individual hydrophone on the vessel.
Note
The installation shipyard must provide all necessary design and installation drawings, as
well as the relevant work standards and mounting procedures.
If required, all documents provided by the shipyard for the physical installation of the
SR70 must be approved by the vessel’s national registry and corresponding maritime
authority and/or classification society. Such approval must be obtained before the
installation can begin. The shipowner and shipyard doing the installation are responsible
for obtaining and paying for such approval.

Kongsberg Maritime AS will accept no responsibility for any damage or injury to the
system, vessel or personnel caused by equipment that has been incorrectly installed or
maintained, or by drawings, instructions or procedures that have not been prepared by
us. The outline dimensions of the SR70 hydrophone and the relevant installation items
can be found in the Drawing file chapter in this manual.
End user manuals and source drawings (normally in AutoCad format) can be downloaded
from our website.

Installation Manual

Installing the SR70 using its mounting

brackets
The receiver unit can be installed vertically or horizontally using the integrated mounting
brackets.

Prerequisites
A suitable location for the SR70 must be defined prior to installation. The unit can in
principle be mounted anywhere on board the ship, provided that the location is dry and
ventilated. The physical length of the cables limits the distance between the receiver
and the hydrophone.
You must be equipped with a standard set of tools. This tool set must comprise the
normal tools for electronic and electromechanical tasks.

Context
If you mount the SR70 on a bulkhead, position the unit so that all the connectors are
facing down.
Ensure maximum physical distance between the receiver unit and the power supply
unit. This is important to reduce noise.

Procedure
1 Observe the installation requirements.
a The position must be chosen to fit the available cable lengths between the
receiver unit and the other units it connects to.
b Make sure that enough space is made available for maintenance purposes.
c Make sure that adequate ventilation is available to avoid overheating.
d Make sure that the installation method allows for the physical vibration,
movements and forces normally experienced on a vessel.
2 Place the unit in the selected location.
3 Secure the unit using four bolts or screws.
4 Connect the cables.
Note
When you connect the cables, make sure that they are all properly secured, and able
to withstand the vibration and movements of the vessel.

the SR Hydrophone Setup dialog box.
b Select the Spectrum icon, under the Hydrophone icon to access the Spectrum
dialog box.

The graph in the Spectrum dialog box provides you with information about
the background noise and the signal strength in the selected frequency band.
With the channel identifiers you can easily see in which channels you have
signals and noise.
8 Select the gear you wish to use.
The Select Gear page is located at the left of the Installation
dialog box.
9 Select one or more catch monitoring sensors, and place them
on the chosen gear.

Overview of frequency selection

If many acoustic systems are used simultaneously, due care must be taken to prevent
acoustic interference between the different instruments. Make sure you do not have any
interfering channel if you have a PI Receiver working simultaneously with an SR15
or SR70 Receiver.
Kongsberg Maritime Catch monitoring sensors communicate on a frequency range
from 40 to 50 kHz.
Frequencies 39.4 - 40.8 - 42.2 - 43.6 - 45.0 - 46.4 - 47.8 - 49.2 -

PI Sensors — — 1 - 30
— — — — —
Channel

SR15 and SR70 Receiver Units

• Frequency range: 39.4 to 50.5 kHz.
• An SR type receiver has 8 communication channels when interfacing the following
sensor/sensors:
– PX TrawlEye
• An SR type receiver has 16 communication channels (1 Low to 8 High) when
interfacing the following sensor/sensors:
– PX MultiSensor Mk2
– PX MultiCatch
– PX Universal
– PX Flow

PI50 and PI60 Receiver Units

• The PI50/PI60 Receiver Units frequency range is from 43.6 to 49.4 kHz. It works in
the same operational frequency band as PX TrawlEye sensor channels 4 to 8 and the
rest of PX sensors channels 4L to 8H.
• The PI50/PI60 Receiver Units channels are 1 to 30.
Make sure you do not have any interfering channel if you have a PI Receiver working
simultaneously with an SR15 or SR70 Receiver.
Lower frequencies are better for long range communications. If you need long-range
communication, you should use low channels.
