TASK NO. 3. LET’S READ AND ANALYZE.

PHILOSOPHICAL VIEWS REGARDING ENVIRONMENT AND ITS
RELATIONSHIP WITH MAN

There are many Philosophical views regarding man’s relationship to his

environment. These views influenced and defined human actions in the environment.
The following are some of the important philosophical views:

ANTHROPOCENTRISM is the belief

that human beings are the most important entity
in the universe. Anthropocentrism interprets or
regards the world in terms of human values and
experiences.

DEEP ECOLOGY is an environmental

philosophy promoting the inherent worth of living
beings regardless of their instrumental utility to
human needs, plus a restructuring of modern
human societies following such ideas.

THE GAIA HYPOTHESIS proposes that

living organisms interact with

conditions for life on the planet.

THEOLOGICAL VIEWS – "In the beginning, God created the heavens and the
earth." The first sentence of the Bible together with the subsequent creation of
man provides a necessary foundation for environmental reflection. God made the
earth and gave to human beings a special place and a role of stewardship
concerning the rest of creation. This place and this role afford human beings a

unique dignity and responsibility. Environmental stewardship properly addresses
both human responsibilities to earth and gave to human beings a special place
and a role of stewardship concerning the rest of creation. This place and this role
afford human beings a unique dignity and responsibility. Environmental
stewardship properly addresses both human responsibility to the environment
and the special place and dignity of human beings within God's creation hold that
mankind is intended to live in harmony with all creation.

ENVIRONMENTAL ETHICS is an established field of practical philosophy "which

reconstructs the essential types of argumentation that can be made for protecting
natural entities and the sustainable use of natural resources.

ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE is the fair treatment and meaningful involvement of

all people regardless of race, color, national origin, or income for the
development, implementation, and enforcement of environmental laws,
regulations, and policies

ENVIRONMENTAL AESTHETICS refers to the concept of beauty in nature. It

also speaks of natural beauty in the context of maintaining order and balance in
nature’s innate beauty but will also help him relate more effectively with the
environment.
