This B ritish S tandard has b een prepared under t h e direction of th e Aerospace

S tandards Policy Committee. It is th e fi rs t revision of BS M 5 4, which was

originally published in 1 98 2 and is now withdrawn,

In this revision, t h e requirements have b een reviewed in t h e light of operating

experience. No maj or changes have b een introduced and t h e principles remain

t h e same. However, detailed modifications have b een introduced and, w here

necessary, reinforced to reflect c urrent technological trends and t o allow
