Introduction
Social networking sites are the main application under the umbrella of social
media, which comes with the Web 2.0 era. It is the fastest growing web application in
21st century. The wide nature of applications like Wikis, video streaming and
networking sites (SNSs) have created a new social dimension where individuals can
increase their social awareness by keeping in touch with old friends, making new
friends, dispensing new data or products and gathering information in other aspects of
everyday life. This helps individuals become more knowledgeable, which is very
According to Greenhow (2008), social networking sites could become a vital part
of the education environment if implemented effectively. She said that SNS expanded
the student’s abilities to perform work by actually practicing the kinds of 21 st century
skills. Social networking is most effective when educators can link learners with others
who might share their interest or encourage students to publish works for a larger
audience (MAF, 2009). With this mind, one has to wonder why social networking has
not been leveraged more in schools to enhance the education of youth. According to
NSBA (2007), there would have to do with ensuring their online safety, which has posed

Social networking sites bring many influences to teen’s life. Not just good

being obsessed tosocial networking sites. This is one of the reasons of their

tremendous thing is that, some people are fighting through social media like when Agot

purpose of this study is to determine the influences brought by social networking sites to

study will give them reliable information and it gives awareness about the impact of SNS
to their life.

On the light of conclusion being made, the researchers come up with the

the parents should monitor their children as to the exposure to the social networking

1 The usage of SNSs is useful in higher educational institutions, because they are an effective
communication application.

in my academic performance.
9 The SNSs help in my studies because I can discuss my assignments with friends.
10 I use SNSs to facilitate academic activities and coordinate with friends.
