THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTINGS

Introduction

Social networking sites are the main application under the umbrella of social

media, which comes with the Web 2.0 era. It is the fastest growing web application in

21st century. The wide nature of applications like Wikis, video streaming and

applications, and social networks makes it the phenomenon of the century.Social

networking sites (SNSs) have created a new social dimension where individuals can

increase their social awareness by keeping in touch with old friends, making new

friends, dispensing new data or products and gathering information in other aspects of

everyday life. This helps individuals become more knowledgeable, which is very

beneficial for students.

According to Greenhow (2008), social networking sites could become a vital part

of the education environment if implemented effectively. She said that SNS expanded

the student’s abilities to perform work by actually practicing the kinds of 21 st century

skills. Social networking is most effective when educators can link learners with others

who might share their interest or encourage students to publish works for a larger

audience (MAF, 2009). With this mind, one has to wonder why social networking has

not been leveraged more in schools to enhance the education of youth. According to

NSBA (2007), there would have to do with ensuring their online safety, which has posed

a challenge to school, as well as the typical issues surrounding introduction of any

innovation.

Social networking sites bring many influences to teen’s life. Not just good

influences but also bad ones. There are reasons why most of the young people are

being obsessed tosocial networking sites. This is one of the reasons of their

friendship, having access to quality information as at when it needed and etc. But the

tremendous thing is that, some people are fighting through social media like when Agot

told Duterte “A Psychopath”, many pro-duterte and anti-duterte are fighting through their

comments in the chat box. In which netizens will express their madness and cause

troubles in some ways.

Social networking sites have bad and good effects depending on using it. Almost

students as of today’s generation are fond in using social networking sites. So, the main

purpose of this study is to determine the influences brought by social networking sites to

the 21st century skills students most especially to their academic endeavors. And this

study will give them reliable information and it gives awareness about the impact of SNS

to their life.

Theoretical Framework

People learn through observing others’ behavior, attitudes, and outcomes of

those behaviors. Most human behavior is learned observationally through modeling:

from observing others, one forms an idea of how new behaviors are performed, and on

later occasions this coded information serves as a guide for action (Bandura, 2015).

Bandura’s Social learning theory (2015) explains human behavior in terms of

continuous reciprocal interaction between cognitive, behavioral, and environmental

influences. Bandura believed in “reciprocal determinism”, that is, the world and a

person’s behavior cause each other, while behaviorism essentially states that one’s

environment causes one’s behavior, Bandura, who was studying adolescent

aggression, found this too simplistic, and so in addition he suggested that behavior

causes environment as well. Later, Bandura soon considered personality as an

interaction between three components: the environment, behavior, and one’s

psychological processes (one’s ability to entertain images in minds and language).

Social Development Theory of Vygotsky (2015) argues that social interaction

precedes development; consciousness and cognition are the end product of

socialization and social behavior.

According to Lave’s Situated Learning Theory, social interaction and

collaboration are essential components of situated learning — learners become

involved in a “community of practice” which embodies certain beliefs and behaviors to

be acquired. As the beginner or novice moves from the periphery of a community to its

center, he or she becomes more active and engaged within the culture and eventually

assumes the role of an expert.

Conceptual Framework

The three parts are shown in figure 1: the basis, the process, and the outcome of

the study that was conducted. The actual responses and answers to the distributed

questionnaire among Ninety four (94) respondents served as the basis for research.

The first is the basis; in this part is the recognition of the profiling of respondents based

on the following factors: age, gender, and the Second grading total average and also

the level of 21st- century skills of the student. The second part is the process. Here's

what will happen to the influence of Social Networking Sites to the academic

performance of the student. The final part is the outcome of the teaching lesson. Here

you can find the proposed work or the suggested output after the study was conducted

which is the symposium.

Significance of the Study

Nowadays, many people are using social networking Sites. As such, many also

know how much effect it has on users. This may cause bad or good effects. This study

is expected to be helpful in the following:

Students. This study will help them to be aware on what are the bad influences

brought by Social networking sites in order for them to utilize SNS in good ways.

Parents. It will help them to guide their childrenfrom what is right from wrong in

terms of using SNS.

Teachers. It will serve as their additional teaching information to

guidetheirstudentson using SNS in a proper ways.

Future Researchers. This will serve as their guide for another conduct of studies

which are related and it will give them additional information.

Scope and limitation

This research focused on determining the influence of social networking sites to

the 21st century skills of Grade 10 students in PNHS based on personal experience. The

Definition of Terms

To help the readers to understand all the terms used, the researchers defined the

following terms operationally.

21st century skills. 21st century skills refers to a broad set of knowledge, skills,

work habits, and character traits that are believed—by educators, school reformers,

college professors, employers, and others—to be critically important to success in

today’s world, particularly in collegiate programs and contemporary careers

and workplaces.

Collaboration. Collaboration is where two or more people or organizations work

together to realize or achieve a goal or project successfully.

Communication skill. Communication skill is the ability to convey information to

another effectively and efficiently. Business managers with good verbal, non verbal and

written communication skills help facilitate the sharing of information between people

within a company for its commercial benefit.

Creativity. Creativity is a phenomenon whereby something new and somehow

valuable is formed. The created item may be intangible (such as an idea, a scientific

theory, a musical composition, or a joke) or a physical object (such as an invention,

a literary work, or a painting).

Critical thinking. Critical thinking is the ability to think clearly and rationally

about what to do or what to believe. It includes the ability to engage in reflective and

independent thinking

Facebook. Facebook is a popular social networking sites launched on February

2004.

Internet. The internet is a computer system that connects the world.

Social networking sites. A social networking site is an online platform that

allows users to create a public profile and interact with other users on the website.

Social networking sites usually have a new user input a list of people with whom they

share a connection and then allow the people on the list to confirm or deny the

connection.

Social skill. A social skill is any competence facilitating interaction and

communications with others where social rules and relations are created,

communicated, and change in verbal and nonverbal ways.

Review of Related Literature and Studies

This chapter discusses study and literature related to the subject of this research.

This chapter presents the relevance of studies and literature.

Related literature

Relevant literature, foreign, or local are presented in this research. It comes from

books, term papers, theses, essays and other topic-related articles.

Foreign

Social networking sites although has been recognized as an important resource

for education today, studies however shows that students use social networking sites

such as Facebook for fun, to kill time, to meet existing friends or to make new ones

(Ellison et al., 2007). Although it has been put forward that students spends much time

on participating in social networking activities, with many students blaming the various

social networking sites for their steady decrease in grade point averages (Kimberly et al,

2009), it also shows that only few students are aware of the academic and professional

networking opportunities the sites offered.

Social networking sites help the students when by using it properly. It provides

individual and sense of belongingness among the users and it breaks the barriers to a

good communication from one person to another (Zuart, et al., 2011). Ellison (2008),

believe that the benefits provided by Social networking sites such as Facebook have

made us better off as society and as individuals, and that, as they continue to be

adopted by more diverse population.

Students who obtained quality and good education contribute hugely to building

of any country. The important aspect that can impact positively the educational

performance is through the use of internet. It was proposed on 2001 by Shah, that the

effect of internet use if largely determined by the type of internet usage. Tuckman

(2012) defined performance as the apparent demonstration of understanding, concepts,

skills, ideas and knowledge of a person and proposed that grades clearly depict the

performance of a student. Hence, their academic performance must be managed

efficiently keeping in view all the factors that can positively or negatively affect their

educational performance. He proposed that internet is advantageous to both students

and teachers if used as a tool of knowledge creation and dissemination. In addition,

academic performance defined by (Kobal and Musek, 2012) refers to the numerical

scores of a student’s knowledge, representing the degree of a student’s adaptation to

schoolwork and the educational system.

The use of technology such as internet is one way that can affect educational

performance of a student they want to attain in their studies. Shan et al. (2001)

proposed that student’s users are affected by the internet and this impact is determined

by the type of internet usage. Internet is a network of communication that connects

computer networks and organizational computer facilities around the world.

According to Walter (2015), social media has truly made our world a better place

and think overall the world has greatly benefited from its existence for many different

reasons. Social media offer an accessible, widely available means for a bi-directional

flow of information between the public and the authorities (Simon, et al., 2014).

Social network sites help fulfill communication needs and wants. It is a

convenient method of communication and provides the ability to stay connected with

friends and family, but on the users own rate and time. Users can manage their

interactions within their own schedule by choosing when they want to read and respond.

It is efficient because it is a one-to-many method of communication which allows users

to quickly spread information (Gurcan, 2015).

Local

Education plays a very important role in the development and progress of a

certain nation. With the advancement of science and technology, it is indeed that

globalization and internalization of education are considered as challenges that every

country must uphold. And one of the emphases of today’s challenges in education is the

promotion of 21st-century skills among students (Tindowen, 2017).

However, it is also a reality that a huge number of the world population are

dropouts, out-of-school youth, and even individuals who do not go to formal schooling.

And as a result, these individuals who do not go to formal schooling have difficulties in

understanding and learning 21st-century skills which enable them to cope with and to

compete in the globalized world (Bassig & Cagurangan, 2017).

21ST century education requires educational administrators, teachers and

students to use technology for the advancement of learning and teaching (Enriquez,

2014). Nowadays, many academic articles, virtual learning environments and other

educational tools which are available in the internet for free can be accessed by

ordinary people. Students to be more specific frequently used the internet or to be more

particular social networking sites (Espinoza, 2008).

In the field of educational technology, recent studies have proven many benefits

of using the Internet for providing stronger motivation for learning among students

(Enriquez, 2014).

Students using Social networking websites are practicing the 21st century skills

needed to be successful in today’s society. Students are improving their communication

through social network sites a skill that could be essential for a success career

(Amabao, 2016).

As mentioned in the study of Gemora et al. (2015), Social Networking Site (SNS)

covers all about engagement creating relationships, communicating with one’s readers,

building his following and connecting with his online audience. It has been observed as

the practice of expanding the number of one's business and/or social contacts by

making connections through individuals.

The relevant study can be foreign, or locally presented in this research. It comes

from term papers, theses, essays and other subject-related studies.

Foreign

Social network is a formed how people of all ages work, play, and shop-and even

how we elect presidents. Pew study (2010) illustrates that it has become an integral part

of the world beyond k12 schools. An NSBA study (2010), it said that 96 percent of those

with online access reported using social networking, and half said they use it to discuss

schoolwork. Despite this prevalence in everyday life, schools have been hesitant to

adopt Social networking as an education tool.

According to a study conducted by the University of Minnesota (2017) on student

use of social media, students who are already engaging in the social networking could

benefit from incorporating it into curriculum. Greenhow (2017), elaborated on the impact

of SNS could have on education. By understanding how students maybe positively

using these networking technologies in their daily lives and where the as- yet-

unrecognized educational opportunities are, we can help make schools event more

relevant, connected and meaningful to kids.

It is believed that the emergence of social networking sites like Facebook has

received a lot of attention and patronage by all ages across the world but significantly

people around college or university going age are mostly found on this social network.

Valenzuela, Park &Kee’s study (2008) attest to this claim as it was found that students

between the ages of 18-29 years have accounts on Facebook and use the online

network daily. On the hand, the emergence of instant messaging sites like Whatsapp,

Snapchat, Twitter, Instagram and the rest have all contributed and still play a key role

either positively or negatively on students’ academic and social lives (Campus Quad,

2014).

A survey conducted by Ellison, Steinfield & Lampe (2007) proved that students

use social networking sites 30 minutes within the day as part of their normal activities.

Students on the other hand also spend between one to two hours daily on the internet

(Yazdanfar & Aghili, 2012). Wang, Chen & Liang (2011) did a survey involving 48

participants made up of 22 females and 26 males, randomly selected. The results of this

study indicated that students spend over six to eight hours daily on social media sites.

The results further revealed that the least number of hours students spend on social

networking sites was two hours.

A study conducted by Faculty Focus (2009) revealed that students spend over 31

minutes on social networking sites every day. According to the same study students

who are heavy users of social networking sites spend over 60 minutes daily networking

with friends.

Local

According to Dr. Garcia (2010), 83% of the Philippine population is social

network users. In addition, he said that 48% of students are more reliant on gadgets

and search engines in doing their assignments. The long hours exposure in pc are lose

bonding time and face to face communication with their family reach 27% of youths. He

mentioned that 20% loss their privacy and security and 5% of youths suffered of self

and emotional disturbances.

According to the study "effects of signing social networking websites in 1st year

students study from the Santo Tomas College", networking sites are one of the reasons

why young people and some numbers Adults become hooked to photography, blogging

and so on.

One of its bad effects is that it creates another person's identity and a wrong

record of one. The study also notes that people who do not have too much social life

pass through networking. Because of what the study says is a way to communicate with

people away from one another, whether known or not. It is also difficult to find privacy

here especially on a website that sees every user's updates.

Synthesis of the Study

An NSBA study (2010), it said that 96 percent of those with online access

reported using social networking, and half said they use it to discuss schoolwork.

Research Instrument

The researchers used the adapted survey questionnaire entitled: “The Influence

of Social Networks on Students’ Performance” by Heyam A. Al-Tarawneh (2014). The

questionnaire was modified by the researchers and chose only the questions which are

needed in the study. The questionnaire is consisted of three parts. The part I answers

the demographic profile of the respondents; sex, age including the GPA, the secondpart

has 5 questions in each of the 21 st century skills in which it aims to measure the level of

21st century skills of the Grade 10 students. And the last part has 20 items that would

determine the influence of social networking sites to the academic performance of the

students.

Data gathering procedure

Before the validated standardized questionnaires were being distributed to the

respondents of the study, the researchers made first a letter to seek the approval of the

Principal of the Senior High School students of SDSSU; Principal of Purisima National

High School; The advisers of the twosections of Grade 10 to allow the researchers to

conduct the study. After the permission is granted, the researchers distributed

personally the questionnaires to the respondents and then respondents answered the

questionnaire that was given to them. Two classrooms utilized for the conduct during

the break or vacant time of the respondents.

Respondents of the Study

The respondents of the study were the Grade 10 students of the Purisima

National High School that are recently enrolled in the academic Year 2017-2018. It was

composed of 94 respondents.

Statistical Treatment of the Data

To present, analyze and interpret the data gathered from the respondents, the

researchers utilized the frequency counting, weighted mean, and Pearson Product

Moment Correlation.

Frequency counting is the method by which the number of respondents,

responses or occurrences of the subject of the study is determined. It was used for the

profile of the respondents.

Weighted mean was used to present the level of responses gathered from the

influences of Social networking sites to the 21 st century skills of the respondents.

Pearson product correlation was used to determine if there is a significant relationship

between the variable.

Pearson Product Moment Correlation was used to answer the problem no. 4

– The significant relationship between the level of 21 st century skills and the influence of

social networking sites to the academic performance of the respondents.

Recommendations

On the light of conclusion being made, the researchers come up with the

recommendation that. It is being recommended that the students should manage to

control themselves in terms of using social networking sites and they should be able to

know their limit on using it. Symposium will be designed to help the respondents to be

more knowledgeable in the proper usage of social networking sites. This symposium will

also serve as the eye opener to the students on the bad and good influences which

bring of the social networking sites to their academic aspects. It is recommended that

the parents should monitor their children as to the exposure to the social networking

sites. It is also highly recommended that students should use SNS as it expanded the

student’s abilities to perform work by actually practicing the kinds of 21st century skills.
