1. ACKNOWLEDGEMENT I would like to express my special thanks of gratitude to my teacher MS.

ALKA
GAUTAM who gave me the golden opportunity to do this wonderful project on the topic OXIDATION
IN DAILY LIFE ,which also helped me in doing a lot of Research and I came to know about so many new
things I am really thankful to them. Secondly I would also like to thank my parents and friends who
helped me a lot in finalizing this project within the limited time frame.

4. OXIDATION IN DAILY LIFE CORROSION RANCIDITY

5. WHAT IS CORROSION ? Formation of layers of undesired conpounds such as metallic oxides, metallic
hydroxide, metallic carbonates on the surface of metal is called corrosion. It is slow oxidation caused
by moist air containing oxygen, carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulphide.

6. DIFFERENT KINDS OF CORROSION RUSTING The slow conversion of iron into its hydrated ferric oxide
in the presence of moist air is called Rusting. 4Fe + 3O2 + 2XH2O = 2Fe2O3.XH2O The number of water
molecules (x) in the rust varies, it is not fixed.

7. WHY RUSTING IS A PROBLEM Every year, millions of dollars of damage are caused to buildings,
vehicles and other iron and steel products. Rust is porous, absorbing water like a sponge. When this
happens layers flake off , leaving exposed metal to be attacked by this oxygen continues until the rust
eats right through the metal.

8. COPPER TARNISH Copper is attacked by moist air containing CO2 to form green colored hydrated
copper carbonate CuCO3.Cu(OH)2

9. SILVER TARNISH Unlike iron and aluminum , silver does not react with hydrogen sulphide forming
hydrated silver sulphide which causes silver to develop a black coating . The black layer is annoying
but it can be removed by polishing the silver .

10. ALLUMINIUM CORROSION Aluminum reacts with oxygen to form a sticky coating of aluminum
oxide which is unaffected by water so prevent further corrosion . Al + 2O = AlO2

11. GROUP DISCUSSION Corrosion of automobiles cause millions of dollars of damage every year .
Which parts of automobiles corrode most? How can car owner reduce the effect of corrosion?

12. WHAT CAN WE PREVENT CORROSION?

13. COVERING THE SURFACE WITH A MORE REACTIVE METAL OR IT’S OXIDE SACRIFICIAL PROTECTION
Galvanization – Covering with zink. Tinning – covering with tinning Anodizing –Coating metals Al, Mg
which is made the anode with thick coating of its oxide.

16. PREVENTION OF RANCIDITY

17. ANTIOXIDANTS IN ACTION OXIDATION OCCURS WHEN THE APPLE IS LEFT EXPOSED IN AIR THE
APPLE IS PROTECTED WHEN DIPPED IN ORANGE JUICE CONTAINING THE ANTIOXIDANT VITAMIN C.

18. PACKING OF N2 GAS The packed food is surrounded by the nitrogen gas after flushing out oxygen
to prevent oxidation and retard rancidity.

19. STORING IN AIR TIGHT CONTAINER An air tight container offers little exposure to oxygen and thus
slows down rancidity.

20. STORING AWAY FROM LIGHT
