Dear students and faculty,
With our project week named ‘The Main Ingredient’ we’d like
to focus on some of the essential elements we encounter in our artistic lives.
We asked our faculty and guests to talk about what is essential to them in
performing and writing music, also considering the broader spectrum of
musicianship.
We hope this program will once more encourage you to listen to each other, let
you discover something new and deepen your understanding of the ‘main ingredi-
ents’ that shape the music you make.

How to build your solo
Interacting with the rhythm section, building up tension, leaving space, locking with the
drummer, playing strong melodies, developing ideas; these are all important things when it
comes to playing a solo. Especially if you’re playing a full-length concert, it can sometimes
be difficult to keep coming up with original material. We will be talking about some of the
points on which you could focus, such as rhythm, space and interaction.

Karel Boehlee - Workshop
11.00 - 13.00
Practicing Standards
During many years of practicing jazz standards, Karel Boehlee found numerous inspirational
aspects to work on.
It is an art to make those individual aspects visible, and a pleasure when you can find both
artistic and effective ways to develop them.
He will explain how to find those subjects, and how you can have fun with them.
When you zoom in on harmonic material for instance, you leave the form of the standards.
That way you find new means to make the music personal and come up with explicit
solutions being creative and efficient on the spot.

Clave in Jazz Part II - Charlie Parker and clave
Last year we took a look at the concept of clave, specific rhythmic figures originating from
Sub-Saharan Africa, and its place in jazz. This year we’ll continue the journey with some new
insights and we take a look on how these patterns play a role specifically in Charlie Parker’s
music. We’ll strive to get to a practical way of dealing with these rhythm that you can use in
your own playing.
N.B. It’s not a problem if you didn’t attend the lecture last year. A short recap of last year’s
important findings will be presented.
Forget harmony. We will approach songwriting from its very basics: groove and words.
We will create drum patterns and lyrics on the spot, work them out and let them date each
other, hoping for a happy relationship.
Great musicians are great listeners. Actively listening to music is important for many
reasons. Since ages every issue of Downbeat Magazine includes a blindfold listening test with
a well known jazz musician. Not knowing what is being played changes your way of listening.
Throughout its history the Downbeat Blindfold Test has had some interesting and funny
outcomes.
In this workshop we will do a blindfold listening test. This will sharpen up your ears and help
you become a better listener and musician.

Next masterclass on Thursday morning
Classical music uses a lot of indications for how to play a certain phrase: soft, loud,
crescendo etc. What are our ways of communicating in music and what are the possible
colors that we can use to express ourselves? Listening and responding will be the main
ingredients in this workshop. We will dive into duo playing, colors and dynamics to become
a more expressive musician.
Developing jazz language: Developing jazz language is all about building your jazz vocabulary.
To help you find ways to speak the language fluently, creatively and with expressiveness,
we’ll deal with questions like “How do I tell a story in a coherent way?”, “how do I build up
a solo?” and “how do I navigate through tough chord changes?”.
We will be watching great video examples.

Christian Pabst and Co de Kloet will discuss the factor “Identity” in relation to music and
musicianship.
No matter how important the notes being played, sung or conducted, the way in which they
are presented as a total package matters. It always ha s mattered and matters even more
today in a world that is so full of new ways to present yourself. C&C will each present five
of their favorite “Identities” in music. You may know some of them, others may be new to
you: but we guarantee, you will not forget them. They will describe what Identity means
within the CvA Music Business & Career course. The final part of this already presentation
will be open for questions, suggestions and discussion.
In this special concert, Master students will perform arrangements of the BA and MA
arranging students Eiríkur Rafn Stefánsson, Alisdair Pickering, Martijn van der Wolf, Damiano
Pascarelli, S’yo Fang and Gregory Ney. The arranging students have been coached by Johan
