THE MAIN INGREDIENT

Jazz Project Week 1
November 5-9
For and with all jazz students and faculty

www.consam.nl
Dear students and faculty,

With our project week named ‘The Main Ingredient’ we’d like
to focus on some of the essential elements we encounter in our artistic lives.

We asked our faculty and guests to talk about what is essential to them in
performing and writing music, also considering the broader spectrum of
musicianship.

The result is another colorful program with ‘ingredients’ such as focus,

artistic identity, groove, intonation, inspiration and ‘freedom and improvisation’.

We hope this program will once more encourage you to listen to each other, let
you discover something new and deepen your understanding of the ‘main ingredi-
ents’ that shape the music you make.

We’re looking forward to another inspiring week with all of you.

Anna-Maria with Edo, David and Bram.

As Theo de Jong explains in his enlightening video: the bass is just a tool:
You play the instrument, the instrument is not playing you.
In the workshop ‘Bass guitar VS Double bass’, Theo de Jong en Frans van der Hoeven explain
and demonstrate that certain music styles do not require one specific type of bass.
Electric or Acoustic… if you have a clear idea of how you want to make it sound,
everything is possible.

Interacting with the rhythm section, building up tension, leaving space, locking with the
drummer, playing strong melodies, developing ideas; these are all important things when it
comes to playing a solo. Especially if you’re playing a full-length concert, it can sometimes
be difficult to keep coming up with original material. We will be talking about some of the
points on which you could focus, such as rhythm, space and interaction.

Yin Yoga, Ensemblezaal

Katrin Kögel, Workshop

Busy life? Up for some relaxation and quietness?
Then Yin yoga might be just the thing for you! In comparison to most other forms of yoga,
you stay in the same posture for several minutes. Sounds boring? Not at all!
Those deep stretches can be a quite intense experience for the body and the mind, while
the slow and quiet way of practicing helps you to calm down. In a meditative way, you learn
to observe your physical sensations and your thoughts and to relax the heart and the mind
even in an uncomfortable situation.
After a session of Yin yoga, you will feel reborn!
Please wear comfortable clothing! Feel free to bring your own yoga mat.

orchestral arrangements for Rufus (with Chaka Khan), Prince (a regular client from 1984
onwards, and by far Fischer’s most frequent in pop music), Robert Palmer, Paul McCartney,
Michael Jackson and Celine Dion. Jazz pianist Herbie Hancock calls him a major influence,
saying: ”I wouldn’t be me without Clare Fischer”. An analysis of remarkable string

examples, and try to put it in a historical context.

Karel Boehlee - Workshop
11.00 - 13.00
Practicing Standards
During many years of practicing jazz standards, Karel Boehlee found numerous inspirational
aspects to work on.
It is an art to make those individual aspects visible, and a pleasure when you can find both
artistic and effective ways to develop them.
He will explain how to find those subjects, and how you can have fun with them.
When you zoom in on harmonic material for instance, you leave the form of the standards.
That way you find new means to make the music personal and come up with explicit
solutions being creative and efficient on the spot.

insights and we take a look on how these patterns play a role specifically in Charlie Parker’s
music. We’ll strive to get to a practical way of dealing with these rhythm that you can use in
your own playing.
N.B. It’s not a problem if you didn’t attend the lecture last year. A short recap of last year’s
important findings will be presented.

you become a better listener and musician.

colors that we can use to express ourselves? Listening and responding will be the main
ingredients in this workshop. We will dive into duo playing, colors and dynamics to become
a more expressive musician.

Developing jazz language: Developing jazz language is all about building your jazz vocabulary.
To help you find ways to speak the language fluently, creatively and with expressiveness,

a solo?” and “how do I navigate through tough chord changes?”.
We will be watching great video examples.
