III. Reminders

Motivational Strategy: Article Analysis

Activity “Auto-RIGHT-y”

INSTRUCTION: Understand the statements

carefully, and answer the questions provided.

Context:

It was March 2020. The Covid-19 pandemic became

a global problem. Local governments in the
Philippines implemented curfews in barangays
guided by the rules and regulations in Enhance
Community Quarantine (ECQ) provided by the
Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) and Department of
Health (DOH). Brgy. Gatid, Sta. Cruz, Laguna
implemented a curfew from 10:00 pm to 4:00 am.
The barangay police officers (tanod) roam around
the community to catch those who will violate the
curfew. All of the people who are caught violating
protocol will be caged or detained inside the dog
cage. This serves as their punishment as violators of
the curfew/protocol. Most of the violators caught
were minor.

or issues within the community or society?

5. Why is it important that authorities or

stewards should use their power or rights in
proper ways?

6. As a student, what will be your message to

their power to the people or community?

Abstraction Discussion:

I. What does Abuse of Authority mean

according to Philippine Law?
● Grave abuse of authority' may thus, be
defined as the use or misuse of one's
authority in a want only and capriciously
excessive or extravagant manner
contrary to the natural or legal rules for
its use

II. Abuse of Authority in the Philippines

1. Human Rights Violations
a. What are human rights? Human rights
are rights inherent to all human beings,
regardless of race, sex, nationality, ethnicity,
language, religion, or any other status. It
include the right to life and liberty, freedom
from slavery and torture, freedom of
opinion and expression, the right to work
and education, and many more.
b. What is the situation of human rights in
the Philippines? According to the United
Nations Office of the High Commissioner
for Human Rights (OHCHR) in their report
on the human rights situation in the
Philippines that threats and attacks,
including killings, against left-wing political

activists, environmental activists,

community leaders, Indigenous peoples’
leaders, journalists, lawyers, and others rose
in the past year. To further discuss about
the specific issues, here are some of the
human rights violation:
i. Unending “Drug War”: The vast
majority of “drug war” killings have not
been seriously investigated by the
authorities. Only a handful of cases are
in varying stages of investigation by
prosecutors. Only one case—the video
recorded murder of 17-year-old Kian
delos Santos in August 2017—has
resulted in the 2018 conviction of
several police officers.
ii. COVID-19: Since March 16, the
government has imposed varying
types of quarantines and lockdowns to
contain the spread of the virus. Abuses
reported include local officials putting
curfew violators in dog cages or
exposing them to hours sitting in the
summer sun as a form of punishment.
Two children who were arrested after
curfew were put inside a coffin by local
officials. In April, three LGBT people
were accosted by authorities for
violating curfew. Officials humiliated
them by forcing them to dance and
kiss each other in public.
2. Corruption
a. (Public Corruption) is the misuse of
public power (by elected politicians or
appointed civil servant) for private
gain.
b. (Private Corruption) is the misuse of
entrusted power (by heritage,
education, marriage, election,

appointment or whatever else) for

private gain.
c. [NEWS] It was revealed that 86
percent of the people surveyed in the
Philippines said that “government
corruption is a big problem,” and that
19 percent of public service users
“have paid a bribe in the previous 12
months.” With this, the fight against
corruption continues in the
Philippines. Task Force Against
Corruption (TFAC) has launched a
video campaign to boost the
government’s fight against corruption,
the Department of Justice (DOJ) said
last March 2, 2022. “The campaign
aims to eliminate the seeds of
corruption that grow into massive
forms of corruption, which inevitably
destroy the moral fiber and future of
society. The campaign also calls upon
the public to have the courage to call
out all forms of corruption.” The
author emphasizes that it is
unrealistic that corruption can end
through a video campaign, but it is
only right that the battle against
corruption in the government to
continue and be addressed properly
(Manila Bulletin, 2022).

III. 7 Christian leadership principles

1. Love
● Love is central to Christianity and every
Christian. Any Christian leader should be
driven in his or her life by the love of God
in anything that he or she does. In this
light, many other people recognize the
heart and motives of that leader.
2. Modesty
MANILA CATHEDRAL SCHOOL
PAASCU Accredited Level II
287 Tayuman St., Tondo, Manila

● Being arrogant does not help model or

demonstrate Christ’s interests. Rather, it
is in direct conflict with Christian
leadership
3. Self Development
● Christian leaders can follow Jesus’
example of seeking God for insight into
His will and for strength. Becoming more
righteous is a lifelong process for all
Christians, and leaders need to make
time to grow spiritually.
4. Motivation
● Instead of misleading or exploiting
people, good leaders motivate others
5. Correction
● Correcting others in the right way is
important for all Christians and we
should never just accept mistakes. Every
attempt should be made to correct
mistakes. The key is to realize what is
right and wrong and can be corrected
6. Follower of God’s will
● Obedience to God is not only a way to
worship him, but a way to get closer to
him, prepare for whatever he leads you
to and grow as a person
7. Integrity
● Integrity involves practicing what we
preach, being consistent and
dependable, doing what we say we will
do and living in such a way that others
will trust us
