Abstraction (10 Definition of patriotism

mins) Patriotism is the feeling of attachment and
commitment to a country, nation, or political
community. It is commonly defined as love of
country, wherein citizens of a country feel pride,
MANILA CATHEDRAL SCHOOL

287 Tayuman St., Tondo, Manila

devotion and attachment to the patria: one's native

country or homeland (Baumeister, n.d.; Longley,
2020).

Just like President Garcia stated in his speech at

the commencement exercises of the Manila Law
College (1957), “patriotism is unselfish like Rizal's
love of country, it is a passion that cannot be
denied like Mabini's attachment to the beloved
Philippines, and it is boundless like Magsaysay's
devotion to his people.” He highlighted in his
speech that patriotism has come to mean love of
our countrymen- each one is part of us and of the
Philippines. It means that we love and cherish our
fellow countrymen or what we call kapuwa.
(Philippine Official Gazette, 1957).

In addition to its definition, as Stephen Nathanson

(1993, 34–35), provides definition of patriotism
which involves:
1. Special affection for one’s own country
2. A sense of personal identification with
the country
3. Special concern for the well-being of
the country
4. Willingness to sacrifice to promote the
country’s good
Now, let’s look at the difference between the terms
patriotism and nationalism
Patriotism:
● Feeling of love for one’s country
● Values and Beliefs
● Nation is one of the best and can be
improved in many ways
Nationalism:
● Loyalty and devotion to one’s nation
● Cultural Background
● One’s country is superior than other nation

Importance of patriotism
1.Helps bring people together (UNITY)
MANILA CATHEDRAL SCHOOL
PAASCU Accredited Level II
287 Tayuman St., Tondo, Manila

● Being part of a nation motivates us to make

our country even better and unites us to give
direction and purpose in our lives.
2.It helps build a nation stronger (Strong Nation)
● By owning the national identity and
supporting the interest of one’s own country

When we recite the pledges like the Panatang

Makabayan and Panunumpa sa Watawat ng
Pilipinas, we solemnly swear and say our duties and
responsibilities as Filipinos which is a sign of our
patriotism. One important line from the pledge is
“tutuparin ko ang tungkulin ng mamamayang
makabayan; naglilingkod, nag-aaral, at nagdarasal
nang buong katapatan.” Apart from swearing to
fulfill our duties as Filipinos, this also indicates that
we show our patriotism by serving the people,
studying, and praying.

Relevance of patriotism in loving the church

Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord,
the people he chose for his inheritance. (Psalm
33:12)
Remind the people to be subject to rulers
and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready to do
whatever is good, to slander no one, to be
peaceable and considerate, and always to be gentle
toward everyone. (Titus 3:1-2)
As Christians, we can show our devotion to
God and to our country simply by steadfastly
praying for our government and honoring the laws.
But we must always keep in mind that God comes
first. It is great to be devoted to our country, our
true authority comes from God.
Jesus said, “My kingdom is not of this world.
If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my
arrest by the Jewish leaders. But now my kingdom
is from another place.” (John 18:36)
Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom
that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so

worship God acceptably with reverence and awe.

(Hebrews 12:28)
The church is His body and He is the head of
it (Ephesians 1:22-23). The church is His bride and
He is the bridegroom (Revelation 19:7; 21: 2, 9).

and God
1. Attend mass regularly
2. Serve and honor God’s blessing
3. Pray for each other
4. Help others or act of generosity
5. Act of kindness and compassion
6. Respect everyone or the Golden rule in
Matthew 7:12 - “do to others as you would
have them do to you.”

2. Follow the laws and rules of the country
3. Patronize and promote local products
