Topic 1: COUNTABLE AND UNCOUNTABLE NOUNS

In English grammar, words that refer to people, places or things are called nouns. There are several ways
to classify nouns. One way is whether they are countable (also known as count) or uncountable (also
known as non-count) nouns. Countable nouns, as the term suggests, refer to things that can be counted.

A word that refers to a person, place, thing, event, substance or quality; can be either countable or uncountable.
Countable nouns have singular and plural forms while uncountable nouns can be used only in the singular form.

Plural nouns examples: table, tables; month, months; pen, pens. A countable noun becomes plural by adding “s” at
the end of the word. Of course, there are exceptions, example: man, men; child, children; goose, geese.

In contrast, uncountable nouns cannot be counted. They have a singular form and do not have a plural form – you
can’t add an “s” to it. E.g., dirt, rice, information and hair. Some uncountable nouns are abstract nouns such as
advice and knowledge.

Ex:

- Her jewellery is designed by a well-known celebrity.

- I needed some advice, so I went to see the counsellor.
- Some nouns can be countable or uncountable depending on
the context or situation.

 We’ll have two coffees (countable).

 I don’t like coffee (uncountable).

Topic 2: THERE IS/THERE ARE.

Las expresiones there is y there are hablan de la existencia o no-existencia de las cosas, como en
español hay.

Por ejemplo:
Hay algo de café en la cocina. = There is some coffee in the kitchen
Hay dos personas en el ascensor. = There are two people in the elevator.
La gran diferencia con el español es que en inglés diferenciamos entre there is en singular y there are en
plural.

Usamos there is para singular (y para cosas incontables). Por ejemplo:

There is an elephant in the zoo.
There is a man at the door.
There is a gas station down the street.
There is a bus stop on the corner.
There’s some wine in the bottle.

Ejemplos de “there are” para plurales:

There are three bottles of beer in the fridge.
There are six cats in the living room.
There are several shops on this street.
There are some people outside.
There’re two new students in class.

Cuidado: ¡People  es plural! En singular, se dice  person. Hay varios  plurales irregulares  en inglés que se tienen que
saber.

_____There is_____ a letter for you on your desk. ___C___

a.

b. ____________ some apples in the refrigerator. g. _________ a slice of cheese for you in the bowl.

d. ____________ some juice in the jug. ______ i. ____________ no baking powder in the cupboard.
e. ____________ any bread for our breakfast! ______ ______
f. ____________ many interesting books at the library. j. ____________ no cars in the parking lot. ______
____ k. _________________ some sugar on the table. ______

Topic 3: HOW MANY/HOW MUCH.

Tanto how much como how many se usan para preguntar por cantidades, en español traduce
“Cuántos”, pero ¿cuándo se usa cada uno?...
 Un sustantivo contable es cualquier cosa que se puede contar en unidades separadas:
edificios, coches, lunares, botellas, lápices, niños, etc. Con ellos usamos how many: How
many cars are there in your garage?

 Los sustantivos incontables son los que no podemos contar en unidades individuales: el
agua, el aire, la luz, la nieve, la lluvia, el hierro, etc. Con ellos usamos how much: How
much water is there in that glass?

Vamos a ver primero cómo usamos la estructura How many… are there?:

¿Cuántos parques hay en How many parks are there in

esta  ciudad? this city?

¿Cuántos bancos hay en How many banks are there in

este pueblo? this village?

¿Cuántos rascacielos hay How many skyscrapers are there

en Madrid? in Madrid?

Ahora nos fijamos en la estructura How much… is there?.

¿Cuánto crimen hay en How much crime is there in New

Nueva  York? York?

How much pollution is there in

¿Cuánta polución hay en China?
China?

¿Cuánta luz solar hay en How much sunlight is there in

las  Canarias? the Canaries?
Por último, veamos algunos sustantivos que son contables en español, pero incontables en inglés.
Notemos la diferencia:

¿Cuántas noticias hay sobre el nuevo How much news is there about the
plan? new plan?

How many people are there in your

¿Cuánta gente hay en tu familia?
family?

¿Cuantos consejos hay en la carta? How much advice is there in the letter?

Extra

Clave de pronunciación

Al decir how ten muchísimo cuidado de no pronunciar /jau/. En inglés, pronunciamos la h como si

estuviéramos echando el aliento a un espejo para abrillantarlo. Piensa en esto mientras
dices /hhhau/.

Error común

Aunque en castellano se pregunte ¿Cuánta gente hay?, en inglés no puedes decir nunca How

much people is there? porque people es un sustantivo PLURAL. Recuerda: How many people are
there?

Let’s practice
1. Imagina que un amigo tuyo acaba de mudarse. Pregúntale cuántas habitaciones, baños,
puertas, sofás, sillas y armarios hay en su casa nueva usando How many… are there?. Luego
pregúntale cuánta luminosidad, agua caliente, calefacción, seguridad y cuánto espacio hay en su
casa con How much… is there?
