CBAR, here we go!

By: Gissele P. Jaro

Almost three years have passed and still we’re doing Online Distance Learning and we’re
about to graduate and we’re doing our student teaching, yet we haven’t got back to our
classroom and actually teach a face to face class to our students. Despite the hurdle, we were
able to start our internship again. We were deployed in the first week of March and I was
assigned to Ma’am Hannah Marie Dela Rama, a Grade 4 Mathematics teacher in Silliman
University Elementary School. Along with our internship, we are tasked to conduct our
Classroom based Research.

Our research problem is about the unresponsiveness of students during discussion. For
the past months that we conduct our student teaching, the common problem that we
encountered in the online class is that students are not very active during the discussion. This is
already a common problem even before the pandemic started and it somehow worsen when
the Online Distance Learning started. As a student teacher, this gives us time to realize and
come up of a solution on how to address this problem so that as we become professional
teachers, we can apply what we had researched. As we seek to improve this problem, it is our
duty to create a strategy to keep students in focusing in the discussion and in an alert mental
state to keep the attention at its highest level. In this part, we are applying the Cognitivism
Theory. The tool that we want to use is through gamification. We are planning to use the
website Quizziz, it is an interactive website where we can make a game where students can
answer the activity together with their classmate even if it’s online. Through this, we can make
students pay more attention in the class and also take record if they really learned the lesson. It
can also grab the attention of the students because of the interactive game.

The things we prepare this week was to finalize our research title and what intervention
we will use in conducting the research. We are hoping we can successfully help in making the
students more active in class. Our critic teacher told us that we will start observing next week,
and to prepare ourselves with the new tasks that we’re going to fulfill this quarter.
