INTRODUCTION

Pole Mounted Substation is an outdoor step-down distribution substation that is placed on an

overhead pole. It is the cheapest, smallest and simplest substation. This type of substation does
not have any building works. The transformer is mounted on an H-Type pole or Four Pole
Structure. The electrical power supply comes in our house mostly from this pole mounted
substation. Pole mounted substation is used for the low voltage power distribution. It generally
supplies the electrical power supply to the domestic consumers. It steps up the voltage from
three phase three wire 11KV into three phase four wire 400V and single phase 230V power
supply. The main advantage of this substation is it provides output in both three phase and
single phase. So it can be used to provide power supply to both the single phase and three phase
consumer. All the equipment and transformer are placed on the pole. The 11 KV incoming
lines are connected to the transformer through the gang isolator and HT fuses. A triple pole
mechanically operated gang isolator switch is used. When the transformer needs to disconnect
from the power supply the isolator can be operated from the downside handle.

Also, the lightning arrester is connected at the High voltage side

that will protect the transformer and its output circuit from the lightning stroke. An Oil Circuit
Breaker(O.C.B) is installed on the Low voltage side of the transformer that will disconnect the
output load or consumer automatically when any fault occurs. During the maintenance or
repairing of the transformer, both of the high voltage side isolator and low voltage side circuit
breaker should be turned off so the transformer will be completely disconnected or be isolated
from the incoming power supply and consumers. The installation and maintenance cost of the
pole-mounted substation is very low compared to other substations because it has low capacity
equipment and structure.

MAJOR EQUIPMENT

1) Pin Insulators

A pin insulator is a device that isolates a wire from a physical support such as a pin (a wooden
or metal dowel of about 3 cm diameter with screw threads) on a telegraph or utility pole. It is
a formed, single layer shape that is made out of a non-conducting material, usually porcelain
or glass. It is thought to be the earliest developed overhead insulator and is still popularly used
in power networks up to 33 KV. Single or multiple pin insulators can be used on one physical
support, however, the number of insulators used depends upon the application's voltage.

2) Earth Pipe

Pipe earthing refers to usage of Pipe as a primary conductor for dissipating fault currents in
electrical systems. Usually, Gl pipes of Class B category are used along with loads of coal
and salt. These days, the strip in pipe or Pipe in Pipe earthing electrodes are also referred to
as Pipe earthing.

8
3) Earth Wire

Earthing is used to protect you from an electric shock. It does this by providing a path (a
protective conductor) for a fault current to flow to earth. It also causes the protective device
(either a circuit-breaker or fuse) to switch off the electric current to the circuit that has the fault.

4) Cross Arm

Electrical cross arms are also known as telephone pole cross arms, light pole cross arms or
power pole cross arms. For example, power pole cross arms are usually connected to an
insulator using an insulator pin. Single electrical cross arm.

9
RAW MATERIALS

1) AB Switch

The triple pole AB switch is gang operated and designed for outdoor application. The switch
is designed to suit overhear systems used in high density urban situations or high load centres.
where the load is much higher and the need of improved and steady quality supply is much
greater. Main function of this product is to isolate the Transformer, Overhead lines, System or
Cables from distribution network.

2) Lighting Arrester

A lightning arrester (alternative spelling lightning arrestor) (also called lightning diverter) is a
device used on electric power systems and telecommunication systems to protect the insulation
and conductors of the system from the damaging effects of lightning the typical lightning
arrester has a high-voltage terminal and a ground terminal. When a lightning surge (or
switching surge, which is very similar) travels along the power line to the arrester, the current
from the surge is diverted through the arrester, in most cases to earth

10
3) Transformer

A transformer is a passive electrical device that transfers electrical energy between two or more
circuits. A varying current in one coil of the transformer produces a varying magnetic flux,
which, in turn, induces a varying electromotive force across a second coil wound around the
same core. Electrical energy can be transferred between the two coils, without a metallic
connection between the two circuits. Faraday's law of induction discovered in 1831 described
the induced voltage effect in any coil due to changing magnetic flux encircled by the coil,
Transformers are used for increasing or decreasing the alternating voltages in electric power
applications, and for coupling the stages of signal processing circuits.

SAFETY RULES FOR OVERHEAD LINES

 Nobody should climb any tower carrying live overhead conductors.
 Cows or other domestic animals should not be tied with any tower legs and stay wires.
 Nobody should be allowed to throw any metallic strip, metallic wire, ropes and green
twinges to the live over head lines.
 If we see any sparking on the live conducting parts of over head system, we should
immediately inform to the concerned authority.
 We should not put any temporary or permanent bands or embankments under the live
over head line which is causes reduction in ground clearance of the Overhead line.
 We should not carry any long metallic poles, bamboos, pipes etc below the live
conductors. Farming just below the over head electrical lines are allowed but
cultivation of sugarcanes like plants h be avoided if those grow above 5 meters height.
 Over loaded bullock carts, tractors trail or similar kind of vehicle with height more
than 5 meters from ground level should not cross any live over head lines.
 We should not touch any over head tower body during rain.
 We should keep sufficient safe distance from the over head line during stormy
weather. During storm, any line conductor or tower may accidentally fall on us.
