DOMAIN 5

ASSESSMENT AND REPORTING

Domain 5 relates to processes associated with a variety of assessment tools and

strategies used by teachers in monitoring, evaluating, documenting and reporting
learners’ needs, progress and achievement. This Domain concerns the use of
assessment data in a variety of ways to inform and enhance the teaching and
learning process and programs. It concerns teachers providing learners with the
necessary feedback about learning outcomes. This feedback informs the reporting
cycle and enables teachers to select, organize and use sound assessment processes.
Specifically, the Domain 5 aims pre-service teachers to possess the following
competencies:
1. Demonstrate knowledge of the design, selection, organization and use of
diagnostic, formative and summative assessment strategies consistent
with curriculum requirements.
2. Demonstrate knowledge of monitoring and evaluation of learner progress
and achievement using learner attainment data.
3. Demonstrate knowledge of providing timely, accurate and constructive
feedback to improve learner performance.
4. Demonstrate familiarity with a range of strategies for communicating
learner needs, progress and achievement.
5. Demonstrate an understanding of the role of assessment data as feedback
in teaching and learning practices and programs.
LESSON 1
ASSESSMENT IN THE CLASSROOM

Assessment is a crucial component of the teaching and learning process for it is

tantamount to achieving the objectives of the lesson. Therefore, pre-service teachers should
be prepared for the task that may include designing, selecting, organizing, and utilizing
different assessment strategies.
Therefore, in this lesson you are expected to:
1. Describe valid and appropriate assessment processes
2. Determine assessment procedures that are aligned with the instructional process
3. Design quality assessment materials

COMPETENCY INDICATOR

At the end of the session, the practice teachers (PTs) will be able to:
● Demonstrate knowledge of the design, selection, organization, and
use of diagnostic, formative, and summative assessment strategies
consistent with curriculum requirements.

TRIGGER THE DESIRE FOR

TEACHING & LEARNING

Study the comic strip below and answer the guide questions that follow.
GUIDE QUESTION::
Based on the scenario, how will you define assessment?
Given on the scenario, assessment is the process where we polish our skills and knowledge to
achieve our goal. In the comic strip, the character learned from his role model (his mom) with
baking cookies and imitate it base on his observation. The story shows how learning is not always
a flowery path and he have gone through a lot of trials before perfecting his own recipe which he
improved by himself.

GUIDE QUESTION::
Why is assessment important?
Assessment is an important element in the teaching and learning process in which we can
evaluate the understanding of our students towards the lesson and an indicator if we have
achieved the target learning outcomes. This also helps us teachers and even parents to
understand our students’ needs and monitor their progress. It is essential for us to appreciate the
importance of assessment in order for us to create an innovative and appropriate assessment for
our students.

GUIDE QUESTION::
What is the ultimate outcome for assessment?
The ultimate outcome for assessment is to grasps our students’ learning progress. Assessment
is made with the purpose of achieving, much better if they surpassed the set standards and
acquiring the learning outcomes formulated for the lesson. This also serves as our judgment for
our students to understand them better and accumulate relevant information to help them excel
academically.

OBSERVATION FOR CLARIFICATION

Identify a teacher and ask different assessment materials he/she used in a particular lesson
(activity sheets, quiz, unit tests, etc.). Attach a copy of the material in this section.

GUIDE QUESTION::
Do/Does the assessment/s used by the teacher align with the objective/s of the lesson?
Yes, I can see the pattern used by the teacher and its alignment on the given activities
to the learning objectives of the lesson. It was good in that way as it was one of the basic
principle in crafting a lesson, it should be able to achieve the target goal to enable
student learning and be aligned with the objectives to be able to assess/evaluate them
accordingly.

GUIDE QUESTION::
Do/Does the assessment/s used by the teacher engage students in meaningful learning?
The assessment used by the teacher in my opinion is less likely to engage students in
meaningful learning. As I have noticed in the lesson plan, the assessment together with
the learning objectives does not align with the learning competency and even elaborate
the human dignity. I personally think it was a bit lacking in the aspect of initiating or
coming up with a much engaging activities that actually suits their grade level.

GUIDE QUESTION::
Do/Does the assessment/s used by the teacher measure the intended content and
performance standards?
The assessment used by the teacher have been able to measure the performance
standard yet barely assess the intended content. I perceived that the content was not
properly elaborated or summarized and for this reason, the activities that was based from
the content seems a bit off with it. Teacher must make sure of their content,
competencies and learning outcomes religiously for them to come up with a much
appropriate assessment for their students’ learning.
REALIZATIONS THROUGH
REFLECTIONS

Based on your observations, list the different assessment principles that you think will work
best in your class.

PRINCIPLE 1: RELIABILITY
It must be stable and consistent as our lessons in class are following the MELCS and
were arranged in a chronological order to continuously sustain learning with the prior
week’s topic as a basis. This includes recapping activities from the previous week’s lesson for
them to reminisce the topic.

PRINCIPLE 2: Authenticity
This pertains to the usability of the lesson to our students’ real life situation. It should
be meaningful, contextualized and relevant to them. A particular example of this are moral
dilemmas and situational examples in activities.

PRINCIPLE 3: Objectivity
This is the ability for us to evaluate the test or the assessment of our students in a
similar mark scheme and being transparent about it. In our case, we allotted appropriate
points for each test items as well as providing rubrics to measure the acceptability of their
answers and outputs, it is also our way of showing that we evaluate all of them fairly.

PRINCIPLE 4: Practicality
This principle is under the time efficiency of the assessment both for the teacher and
the students. Our Grade 10 students tend to have their quizzes after many lessons were
covered, schedule it ahead of time then providing a reviewer for them and also we set
limited time of atleast one (1) hour for them to finish accomplishing the quiz.

PRINCIPLE 5: Validity
This principle refers to the content validity of the assessment in which all content
domains are indicated in the exam. It is sufficient to have this as we want our students to
learn comprehensively. We opt in validating our test items together with aligning it with the
table of specification to ensure to cover the hierarchy of learning.

Ipaliwanag.

This is a movie analysis assignment that I have given to our Grade 10 students in
relation to our topic Makataong Kilos (Humane Action). This is for them to analyze and
reflect the character’s actions in the film. As I have also personally watched the movie, it also
brings out realization to our own actions and feelings as well. I wanted them to be critical in
analyzing this assessment but also learn and understand their self better.
If I would have the chance to improve it, I will make this template an editable one and
I would also want this to be in a Google drive with each team having their respective folders
for easier access & monitoring to their progress. I honestly want to hear their feedback to the
movie as well and what they have learned in it individually.
