Material 1 (Consequences of Deforestation)
Dear Aina,
How are you? I really hope you are doing fine. Lately, I have been feeling worried
because there is a deforestation has been going on at the forest near my village. I am
scared that this could harm my family and other villagers.
If this practice of deforestation continues and people don’t realize the need to stop it,
I am concerned that our people will have to face the consequences. For instance, we
will experience the loss of trees and other vegetation which can cause climate change,
desertification, soil erosion, fewer crops, flooding, and increased greenhouse gases in
the atmosphere. When humans clear large forests, soil erosion can become a serious
problem. In my village, eroding soil can lead to disastrous mudslides. Large amounts
of soil can wash into local streams and rivers, clogging waterways and causing
damage to hydroelectric structures and irrigation infrastructure. In certain areas,
soil erosion issues caused by deforestation lead to farming problems and loss of
reliable electric power.
We really cannot afford to lose our forest and face the consequences. I really hope
you can suggest some ways that can be taken to reverse the deforestation that has
been happening here.
With love,
Sarah.
