PROJECT TITLE
Recycle these Balls
DESCRIPTION
After talking to my coach about tennis balls and he told that tennis balls take
about 400 years to degrade. Every year, over 125 million used tennis balls end up
in landfills across the United States. That's 20,000 metric tons of near-
indecomposable rubber waste that produces methane.
OBJECTIVE
My partner and I came up with an idea and said what if we donate and give it to
nursing homes and elementary schools. We could also donate to animal shelters,
especially for dogs. This can help the environment because it takes about 400
years, there can be another use for tennis balls.

SOLUTION
This can help the landfill and the environment because if it takes 400 years to
degrade, might as well make use out of it. Since tennis balls aren't eco-friendly,
the high-visibility yellow felt coating on the ball is usually a blend of wool and
nylon, which is a petroleum-based product. Plantations used to produce the
rubber that's found in the core of the ball can threaten plant and animal
biodiversity. If we make use of old tennis balls, it will make a difference if it was
in the landfill.
EVALUATION
Quantitative: How many tennis balls we can collect and how many companies
need it
Qualitative: Making sure our tennis ball are clean and not run down
OPPORTUNITY
The opportunity that this has on communities includes: being able to recycle
tennis balls so that old people can have balls for their chairs. We can also donate
it too animal shelters and dog parks, if they do need.
