FULL SPEED AHEAD OR PROCEED WITH CAUTION? 2

Case 2
Social Business: Full Speed Ahead or Proceed with Caution?

2-13) Management - factors of impeding adoption of internal social networks for management is
their source of incentive for their employees. Most employees do not like change and will not
commit to the new social networks installed in the businesses. If some type of incentive was
given to employees then they would most likely then turn to the technological way of doing their
jobs.

Organization - factors of impending adoption of internal social networks for an organization is

the fact that employees are not good with change and they will not allow management to change
the ways of doing their jobs. It is difficult for management to change the way the employees
think, so in order to keep them happy they will not change the processes of the business even
though it is more efficient.

Technology - factors of impending adoption of internal social networks for technology is the fact
that not all social networks can be useful for a company as well as easy to use for employees.
Employees also need to be connected to those who are familiar and skilled with these social
networking programs which sometimes cannot be provided to employees.

2-14) Bayer Material Sciences were successful as management chose IBM connection as its
social business asset. This social business tool is considered to be a knowledge management
system because of its qualities of information on other employees expertise as well as
information on communities outside the firm. Management specifically chose this type of
management system as it contains all the features needed in order to manage the company
correctly and more efficiently based on its goals. They had also trained employees not only on
how to use the platform but how to use it to the best of its ability for each type of job making the
platform more accessible and easier to use which had made them more successful. Having the
social business platform has allowed the company to be more successful as it installed
organization and productivity into the firm as the company became more collaborative through
working with the social platform.

Carlo’s Bake Shop was successful because management had chosen Chatter as their social
business platform. This social business tool is considered a knowledge management system as
decorators and bakers could see what type of cake they are making even though they were not
present in the meeting. It also allows management and staff to communicate any changes that are
made; as well as allowing management to look at the analytics of the business. Therefore
enabling the firm to use Chatter as an advantage for each and every job within the company.
Because the company was strictly using paper at one point, the introduction of the platform has
allowed them to become organized and efficient in preparing orders. Overall the social platform
allowed this business to become more successful and collaborative by switching to a digital

platform instead of drowning in paper.

2-15) When used correctly all companies can benefit from implementing internal enterprise
social networks because it allows companies to run more smoothly as these platforms install
organization and productivity into these companies. These platforms are also very cost effective
which allows companies to speed up their processes without spending very much money. As
seen in the examples in the case study, implementing social networks can cause roaring success
for businesses. By implementing social networks it also allows companies to fit into the 21st-
century outlook by using technology as the base of the company. It allows older companies to
compete with new ones on the same basis instead of falling behind in the market because the
company has not developed to the present technological times.
