Sabratha
The majestic ruins of the ancient city of Sabratha lie about 80 km west of Tripoli,
the capital of Libya. They are the high point of any visit (1) …. that country.

…. , by the second century BCE, Sabratha was a thriving city. Its success was based

buildings were destroyed and the city had to be rebuilt. In the years which followed,
the city expanded steadily and became increasingly wealthy. What is more, it
became an important regional centre. However, when it suffered another earthquake
in 365, the buildings simply collapsed. This was because they had been built (6) ....

This time the city never really recovered. It was occupied by various armies (7) .... it
was abandoned in the eighth century. It was rediscovered in the early 20th century

have been reconstructed and many artefacts have been discovered. These include
