The History of Olympics Games
The notion of gathering men every four years to hold
and see sports contests was initially proposed by the
ancient Greeks (in those days women did not participate,
though they had their own, independent, events). Every
four years, the top athletes from around Greece would
converge on a single field to compete. All conflicts and
fighting had to come to a halt while the athletes and their
supporters gathered in Olympia for a few days to
participate in a few events, the majority of which were
tied to combat (throwing the javelin, running, wrestling,
boxing and chariot racing).

The Games are first mentioned in writing around 776

BC. They survived until 389 ADS, when they were
defeated by the Romans. In the mid-nineteenth century,
it was proposed to have contemporary Games.

Unit 1-6 Solar Systems

1. Read.
The Solar System is the gravitationally bound
system comprising the Sun and its orbiting
components. The Solar System was created by
the gravitational collapse of a massive
interstellar molecular cloud 4.6 billion years
ago. The Sun has 99.86 percent of the system's
mass, with Jupiter holding the majority of the

6
remaining mass. The four planets in the inner
solar system—Mercury, Venus, Earth, and
Mars—are terrestrial planets made mostly of
rock and metal. The outer system's four
enormous planets are far bigger and more
massive than the terrestrials. Jupiter and
Saturn are gas giants, made predominantly of
hydrogen and helium; Uranus and Neptune are
ice giants, made mostly of volatile elements.
2. Write about your thoughts on the solar systems.
3. Find the main ideas and supporting ideas.

Unit 1-2
Volcanoes act as huge pressure relief valves, releasing pressure that has built up inside the Earth. There are around 500 active
volcanoes on the planet, not including those beneath the sea. The eruption of Mount St. Helens in Washington was the deadliest
volcanic explosion ever recorded. The Ojos del Salado volcano in Chile is the world's highest volcano. The "Ring of Fire"
encircles the Pacific Ocean and contains the majority of the world's active volcanoes above sea level. In the last 500 years, almost
200,000 people have died as a result of volcanic eruptions. The magmas found deep below the roots of extinct volcanoes are
mined for the majority of metallic minerals such as copper, gold, silver, lead, and zinc.
Unit 3-4
Sports implies all kinds of physical activities and games that one participates in. Sports is a fascinating and fun thing to practice.
Many people involve themselves in sports out of the enthusiasm and energy-boost that it delivers. Many ardent sports-people
pursue the field based on their passion and interests. Furthermore, sports bring a lot of health benefits to the ones who engage in
it. It helps one take care of their physical state and also of their emotional state. Hence it is a very beneficial practice to
participate in. It brings both joy and health benefits in people’s lives. Sports should be pursued, practiced and engaged in by all.
It is a critical practice and should be popularized more widely.

Unit 5-6
Holidays are very important parts of everyone’s life, be it a student or a working person. Everyone deserves to take a break from the
monotony to rejuvenate and maintain their health. Holidays help us do exactly that. Other than that, a holiday allows us to complete
all our pending work. Nowhere will you find a person who dislikes holidays. From a school going toddler to your house help, everyone
looks forward to holidays and see them as a great opportunity to relax and enjoy.

Unit 7-8
As we all are well familiar with the environment, it is everything which surrounds us naturally and affects our daily lives on the
earth. Everything comes under an environment, the air which we breathe every moment, the water which we use for our daily
routine, plants, animals and other living things, etc. around us. An environment is called healthy environment when natural cycle
goes side by side without any disturbance. Any type of disturbance in the nature’s balance affects the environment totally which
ruins the human lives. Now, in the era of advance living standard of the human being, our environment is getting affected to a
great extent by the means of air pollution, noise pollution, deforestation, water pollution, soil pollution, acid rain and other
dangerous disasters created by the human beings through technological advancement. We all must take an oath together to
protect our natural environment to keep it safe as usual forever.

Unit 9-10
When we look about us, we find a plethora of technological examples. The phone in our hands, the headphones we use to listen to
music, the microwave we use to cook our meals, and even the architecture of the buildings we live in all involve technology in some
way. In today's society, technology is so vital that it's nearly difficult to picture existence without it. We would feel as if something was
lacking in our life if we did not have access to technology.

Unit 11-12
Before, during, and after the American Revolutionary War, the Continental Congress was a succession of legislative assemblies with
certain administrative functions for thirteen of Britain's North American colonies, as well as the newly established United States. The
term "Continental Congress" most specifically refers to the First and Second Congresses of 1774–1781 and, at the time, was also used
to refer to the Congress of the Confederation (1781–1789), which served as the United States' first national government until it was
replaced by the United States Constitution. Thus, the phrase refers to the three congressional assemblies that convened between 1774
and 1789 in the Thirteen Colonies and the nascent United States. In response to rising tensions, the First Continental Congress was
summoned in 1774.

Unit 7-12
It is an understatement to suggest that education is crucial. Education is a tool for bettering one's life. It is, without a doubt, the
most crucial instrument for transforming one's life. A child's education begins at home. It's a process that lasts a lifetime and
culminates in death. Education has a significant impact on the quality of a person's life. Education enhances one's knowledge,
talents, and personality as well as attitude. Most importantly, education has an impact on people's career prospects. A well-

11
educated person has a better chance of landing a decent career. We shall discuss the significance of education in life and society
in this essay about the importance of education….
