PROPERTIES OF A WELL-WRITTEN TEXT

Direction: Part A. Work with a partner. Read the texts about Facebook. Then analyze and describe how a focused
idea is presented, how the texts are organized, how ideas are linked to one another, how language is used, and how
effectively the mechanics (e.g., spelling, punctuation, and abbreviation) are followed. Cite specific examples in your
explanation. Use the table that follows for your answers.

TEXT 1

With the increasing popularity of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), social networking sites
(SNS) have become an integral part of our lives. One of these SNSs is Facebook, a popular site that has over one
billion active users around the world. Generally, there are two main functions of Facebook: for personal use and for
educational purposes.

People use Facebook for their personal use to communicate with their friends and relatives. For example, if
there are important events to celebrate, a Facebook user can just invite friends. Facebook is also extensively used to
interact with other people. Reconnecting with childhood friends and former colleagues is also made easy: a user just
needs to type the name of the person in the search tab and then add that person as a friend.

The second major function of Facebook is for academic purposes. It has several features that can be used for
teaching. For instance, teachers can simply update their statuses or send messages to make announcements on
submission deadlines and assignments. Facebook can also be used as a venue for students to display their works,
such as speaking performances and essays. By sharing their outputs with others and receiving praise or constructive
comments, students would have a sense of authorship. Intellectual discussions can also be conducted on Facebook
through its chatting features.

Undoubtedly, Facebook is a viable tool for personal and academic success. Not only does it enhance and
provide a positive influence in classroom practices, but it also helps individuals collaborate, communicate, and
reconnect. Nevertheless, people should still be responsible enough so that this great invention would not be misused
and put to waste.

TEXT 2

Hi there, friend! I’d like to share my thoughts about FB, I think it has a lot of awesome features. For example,
you can use it in school and at home like me. I use FB to check out what’s happening with my friends. I’ll just type their
name in the search tab, press search, and voila! There they are! They just have to accept my friend's invite, and we’re
good to go. Oh, I also wanna tell you that I also use FB for my studies. Every time we have a project, my classmates
and I just chat with one another to talk about it. My teachers are also using FB when they teach. For example, my
English teacher uses it for our class e-portfolio. So you know, if you think of it, FB is really great!

below with the strengths and weaknesses of the texts you read.

Bang! Little Tommy and Little Anne heard this sound again while they were in their playroom, their haven.
Upstairs, Mom and Dad were preparing dinner. But all of a sudden, silence fell in their house. So they decided to
check if dinner is ready. For sure, they would see Greg in front of the television, playing as a sniper in his game’s
devastated world. However, when they went up, they did not see Greg nor Mom and Dad. Then, they started asking
themselves if the shot they heard was a real one. This situation seems to be familiar to us nowadays, right? As our
modern world changes faster than a blink of an eye, the media takes its audience to a whole new kind of realism. A
realism in which violence plays a vital role for survival. And we let it take over the mind of the youth just by letting them
play those violent video games. These violent video games should not be allowed to be played by the youth.

Playing such games causes the youth physiological problems. Studies show that the young players of these
video games have a higher heart rate and experience more dizziness and nausea. Researchers at India University of
Medicine said that there is a decrease in brain areas which involve self-control, inhibition, and attention.
These violent video games are reported to be the primary cause of increased aggression and other negative
psychological effects among the youth. In a study conducted by Dill and Anderson, they considered violent video
games to be more harmful than violent television shows or movies primarily because of their interactive and sadistic
nature. Dr. Phil explained that the number one negative effect of these games is that the young players tend to resolve
their anxiety by externalizing it. Also, there is an increased frequency of violent responses from the young players.
This statement was proven by the physical fights at school, violent criminal, and school shooting incidents.

According to Dr. Phil, these violent video games do not teach the youth moral consequences. Also, he added
that they become less caring and helpful to their peers.
