POSITION PAPER

TOPIC:
PRO HOMEWORK

I. INTRODUCTION
Homework is the students spend outside the classroom in
assignment activities to practice, reinforce or apply newly-acquired
skills and knowledge and to learn necessary skill of independent study.
Homework may improve academic skills among older students,
especially lower-achieving students. According to the CNN report”
Homework is associated with high stress levels, physical health
problems and lack in children’s lives, 56% of the students in the study
cited that homework is a primary stressor of their lives.” Teachers
should assign less homework to allow students more time to sleep, to
engage in more physical activity, and spend more quality time with
their families.

II. BODY
Homework has been identified in numerous studies and articles
as a dominant or significant source of stress and anxiety for students.
Cheung & Leung-Ngai did a survey of 1,983 students in Hong kong in
1992 and found out that homework led not only to added stress and
anxiety, but also physical symptoms, such as headaches and
stomachaches. There was also a study of American students by
MetLife in 2007 and they found that 89% of students felt stressed from
homework, with 34% reporting that they “often” or “very often” felt
stressed from homework. But in other word, homework is an
important component of the learning and growing process. It is a
common practice for students to develop their skills and learn new
information. But yet, homework is the common cause of problem to
students because it eats up their valuable time to spend with their
family, attend extracurricular activities and catch up with their friends.

Doing homework has a really bad effect on every student. A

Stanford researcher Denise Pope found that students in high-
achieving communities who spend too much time on homework
experience more stress, physical health problems, a lack of balance
and even alienation from society. The researcher also found that too
much homework can negatively affect kids, especially their lives away
from school, where family, friends and activities matter. Homework is
an important part of being successful inside and outside of the
classroom but students who spend too much time on homework are
not always able to meet other needs, like being physically and socially
active.

Homework can cause anxiety for every students. A study

conducted by Stanford University determined that students who feel
that they spend “too much time” on homework experiences stress and
physical ailments that can be tied to anxiety. Students also cited
having difficulty balancing everything in their life, including family
time and extracurricular activities in addition to homework, which can
contribute to the anxiety. Home learning motivates students to take
responsibility for their workload, while also encouraging the
development of positive research practices but when the workload is
too large and tasks becoming increasingly difficult, homework causes
students to feel anxious, stressed and unmotivated.
III. CONCLUSION
Homework have many negative effects of every students
and it can lead of many physical illnesses. So, to avoid these problems,
the homework should be limited to every student and the students
should have their homework, they should always be motivated and
positive so they will not get depressed, restless, and so on.
