ART 265 For Teachers

Klamath Community College

Art Inventory Autobiography Wilson 2

My definition of art is a form of creative expression. The forms can be different from

each other. It can be a painting, a clay model, a building, or nature itself. Anything that the

human imagination can think up can be considered art.

In Elementary School we had an older male art teacher who came in once a week. He

taught for about an hour and in the end, we would have art to take home. He was also the teacher

that set up plays for the school. I don’t remember the day he came in, but I always looked

forward to it. I was not a good artist, but I always tried my best. He was a very encouraging

teacher.

I had no art classes in high school, but I took a class where we built with clay and did

woodworking. I always enjoyed working with clay. I was into Winnie the Pooh so I would make

clay figurines of the different characters. This is the first art class in college I have taken since

high school. I really enjoyed it. This class makes me use my brain in a different way. Instead of

reading passages, I am creating designs using my eyes and hand.

I would like to learn how to look at art and how to interpret it correctly. I wonder if there

is a correct way to look at art or if each piece is subjected to the individual who views it. I feel

like when I understand art more, I can draw it better. I like the video examples we have been

given to help us improve our art.

The six elements of art are line, color, shape, form, texture, space, and value. A line starts

and stops at a certain point. Lines in art help show edges. There are vertical lines, Horizontal,

Diagonal, gesture, and implied. These create different feelings and movements in pictures.

The principles of art are basic guidelines for producing certain effects in looking at and

responding to artwork. The seven principles of art are balance: emphasis; proportion; movement;

rhythm, repetition, and pattern; variety; and unity.

Important periods of art are Ancient Classical, medieval, renaissance, romanticism, and

modern and contemporary art. I have not visited a museum lately, but I am going to the

Holocaust Museum in June. I have been looking at some of the pictures online and am just in

awe of the different displays. One that really sticks in my mind is the display of various shoes

that were taken from the Jews. The piece is so simple but so moving.

I feel like art is important at school. Art in my school consists of Holiday themed art. I

wish that the schools could get back to sending in a local artist to work with kids again. In

summer school they send an artist from the Favell Museum to work with the kids and they love

it. I would like to see at the very least an hour of art time in classrooms. I don’t know if it would

work timewise but I think it is a worthy endeavor.
