QUESTION

1. What are the advantages of hydroponics ?

2. How to plant spinach by hydroponics ?

ANSWER

1. Benefits of hydroponics

Hydroponics has a number of benefits. What are those? Pest-free plants

Growing crops using soil, sometimes can cause pests that come from the soil
itself. The use of a hydroponic system for farming can minimize or eliminate pests
that are the main enemy of plants. The result is more Plants produced more.
Because usually many plants are wasted due to being eaten or attacked by pests.
So the yield is much more. The plants can be harvested at any time. The
hydroponic system supports growing the desired crop and at any time, even if it is
not the season of the crop. Free of pesticides Hydroponic crops are said to be
healthier because they do not use pesticides or chemicals. Pesticides are often
used to eradicate pests, while in hydroponics the number of pests can be reduced
or even absent because water is used as the main medium.

2. How to Grow Spinach Hydroponically

Actually, there are several techniques used in cultivating spinach with the
hydroponic method. For example, there is a wick system or the use of axes, NFT
or Nutrient Film Technique, hydroponics with a fertigation or irrigation system,
and so on. The following are some of the easiest techniques for you to apply at
home when you want to try growing spinach using the hydroponic method.
Choose a technique and study it carefully until you can harvest your own spinach
plant.

a. Deep water culture

The first hydroponic method is a fairly simple option. You just need to put
the spinach plant in the aeration. Deep water culture or floating raft hydroponic
system is a hydroponic method that is most widely used because of its practicality.
Place your plants in the Styrofoam that has been perforated and float the
Styrofoam in the nutrient solution in a large container. This method can be used
both on a large and small scale. You can use used goods to apply this one
technique.

b. Aeroponics

The second system is a development of the conventional hydroponic system.

The way to do this is to spray the nutrient solution directly on the spinach you
plant. Aeroponics does not require a large planting area so anyone can use this
method. The nutrients that are sprayed on the plants usually contain more oxygen
so that the spinach can grow better and can produce fresher vegetables.

c. Drip

The drip system is a method of growing hydroponic spinach that is also very
often used. Operating this system is very simple and easy. You only need to use
the timer to set the working time of the water pump that will distribute the nutrient
solution to the spinach. The pump will be turned on and then will automatically
flow the nutrient solution to the spinach that you plant. Spinach grown with a drip
system will be supported by roasted husks, sand, or other growing media.

d. Ebb and flow or ups and downs

The tidal method, also known as ebb and flow, is a hydroponic system that
also requires a water pump. The water pump will then be set using a timer. This
system causes water to flood the reservoir with the plants in it. The process of
flooding or plugging will occur only when the water pump is turned on. When the
pump is turned off, a draining process will occur. This method is really easy to
monitor and maintain and it provides more oxygen for your spinach plants.

e. Nutrient Film Technique or NFT

NFT places your spinach in a not-so-deep nutrient solution so that the spinach
roots are not completely submerged. However, the oxygen and nutrients that will
be obtained by planting spinach will be optimal. The NFT system flows water
very stably so that your spinach is able to absorb nutrients and the photosynthesis
process can take place smoothly. This system makes your spinach grow faster so
that the growing period can be shorter. Which of the five hydroponic growing
systems above would you like to try first? Don't hesitate to try growing spinach at
home because the hydroponic system above is very easy for anyone to do, with
any land conditions.
