GPRS: General Packet Radio Service is fully packet oriented, data
trasnmission technique.
Purpose of GPRS is to provide packe ttrasfer service to the user of Interet.
GSM System is authorised to allocate a time slot whichever is vacant in 8
time slots.

General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) is a packet switching system
that developed from GSM, GPRS can connect into Internet, it can
provide abundant of data transfer transaction, such as text, audio,
picture and so on.

When the mobile activates an Internet protocol (IP) packet data
session, the base station notifies its SGSN. The SGSN activates the
session, called a packet data protocol (PDP) context, with the GGSN.

When the GGSN acknowledges successful context creation, an IP
tunnel using the GPRS tunneling protocol (GTP) is created between
the SGSN and GGSN. The tunnel ID (TID) is tied to that mobile’s
context at both the GGSN and the SGSN.

GPRS has opened a wide range of unique services to the mobile

the characteristics:
some of the characteristics:
Mobility - The ability to maintain constant voice and data
communications while on the move.
Immediacy - Allows subscribers to obtain connectivity when needed,
regardless of location and without a lengthy login session.
Localization - Allows subscribers to obtain information relevant to
their current location.

Broad level, applications are divided into either
Carporation or Consumer

Communications - E-mail, fax, unified messaging and

intranet/internet access, etc.
Value-added services - Information services and games, etc.
E-commerce - Retail, ticket purchasing, banking and financial
trading,
Location-based applications - Navigation, traffic conditions,
airline/rail schedules and location finder, etc.
Vertical applications - Freight delivery, fleet management and
sales-force automation.
Advertising - Advertising may be location sensitive. For example, a
user entering a mall can receive advertisements specific to the stores
in that mall.
