ABSTRACTION Definition

A term definition is a word or expression that has a precise meaning in

some uses or is peculiar to a science, art, profession, or subject. Defining
terms is one way of helping to resolve problems of ambiguity and there are
many types of definitions.

Example:

Computer
/kəmˈpyo͞odər/
noun
an electronic device for storing and processing data, typically in binary
form, according to instructions given to it in a variable program.

Computer
Computer is a device that I am using to answer our homework,
communicate with our friends, and play games.

Guide Question:
1. What have you noticed from the two definitions of computer?

Formal Definition
- is based upon a concise, logical pattern that includes as much
information as it can within a minimum amount of space. It provides more
information needed to help increase comprehension

- The dictionary is filled with formal definitions, but it is not the only place
where you will find them.

- consists of three parts: the term, the class or concept to which the term
belongs, and all the traits or characteristics that are specific or that
distinguish it from all others of its class.

Examples:

Freedom (term) refers to the power or right (class or concept) to act,

speak or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint (differentiating
characteristics).

Comic books (term) are sequential and narrative publications (class)

consisting of illustrations, captions, dialogue balloons, and often focus on
super-powered heroes (differentiating characteristics).

Informal Definition

In an informal definition, the writer uses known words or examples to

explain an unknown term.

These definitions may be synonyms, or antonyms introduced by or, in

other words, or like. It could also be a stipulation, analogy, or illustration.

Example:

Snake, also referred to “as elongated, carnivorous reptile,” can also mean
treacherous and deceitful.
