Terzaghi & Peck (1948, 1967)

They were suggest a direct relation between the SPT

N-values and allowable soil pressure for footing on
dry and wet SAND. The following chart only
include 3 different SPT N-value. No correction is
recommended. SPT to perform below the base up to
depth B with 0.8 m intervals. N-value is take as
lowest average for design.

Terzaghi & Peck (1948, 1967)

For saturated soil it was suggested that for small

Df/B ratio, the obtained bearing capacity should be
reduced by 50%. For Df/B => 1.66, then reduction
will be 33% only.

Peck, Hanson & Thornburn (1953, 1974)

Peck et al (1953) presented a modified chart

corresponding to 1 in settlement resembling the chart
of Terzaghi and Peck (1948).

Peck, Hanson & Thornburn (1953, 1974)

For saturated soil (GWT < Df) 50% reduction is

applicable, for intermediate position of GWT,
interpolation can be utilized.

Meyerhof(1956, 1965)

For silty SAND he suggested to reduce the BC up to one-

half, while for SAND-gravel mixtures the BC may be
increased by twice. 50% reduction is applicable for GWT
submergence. BC not affected when GWT below 1.5 B of the
base.

Meyerhof(1956, 1965)
Allowable Bearing Capacity is less than Safe Bearing Capacity and can be
obtained considered 1 in total settlement and 0.75 in differential settlement :

Meyerhof(1956, 1965)
For raft and pier; twice the allowable BC can be used. 1965, he stated the
following equations without correction of GWT effects which – as he
recommended – will be built in N-value:

Sowers (1962)

He presented a chart illustrating the relation between allowable

BC and N-value for small structures with column loads range
from 25000 to 100000 lb. N-value is the average along 1.5 B
depth below the base.

Bowles (1968, 1977, 1982, 1988)

He stated that both methods; Terzaghi & Peck, and Meyerhof

were too conservative and in (1968) he presented the following
charts.

CFM(1975,1985,1992)

presented a chart for allowable BC on non-cohesive soils based
on Peck et al (1953) and they did not take into account the
settlement considerations.
