INTRODUCTION

This chapter presents the rationale of the study, problem statement, theoretical

background, and definition of terms.

Rationale
As we are living through pages of history book, the life of pandemic came and

many changes happened. Following these developments and to avoid the quick spread of

COVID-19, while continuing the academic year, educational institutions worldwide started to

cancel face-to-face classes and began the switch to remote classes (UNESCO, 2020). This

led to significant changes in educational system and students' approach, from normal

schooling turned into home-based learning. Home-based learning (HBL) is the new setup on

our education system in current days. It made students develop new strategies on dealing

with these circumstances in order to understand our lessons and provides different effects,

advantages and disadvantages on the learners.

Given today’s uncertainties, it is important to discuss this issue not only it is

timely and relevant, it is also vital to gain a nuanced understanding of students’ online

learning experience in times of the COVID-19 pandemic and that became our reason to

conduct this study. We also wish to use this research to quantify the long-term

consequences of remote learning on student productivity and assess safety and viability of

these new methods. We have chosen this topic because it is part of our interest.  The study

of students’ engagement in online environments is important as the pandemic presents first

hand professional learning opportunities (Borko, 2004). Furthermore, we want to expand

individual's knowledge about the effects of this new normal way of learning and we are

considering the factors affecting these changes to analyze the problem and reflect.
