I. In your own words, state what “self” is for each of the following philosophers. After doing so,
explain how your concept of “self” is compatible with how they conceived of the “self”.

1. SOCRATES

For Socrates, to ‘know yourself’ is what makes a human happy and to have a good life. The
true “self” for him is one that lived in accordance with knowledge, wisdom, and virtue. The
true self is the virtuous self.

For me, in order to have a good life and to be truly happy, we must know ourselves so that
we can take care and make the best out of it.

2. PLATO

With Plato’s 3 components of soul (rational, spiritual, appetitive), he emphasizes that justice
in the human person can only be attained if the three parts of the soul are working
harmoniously with one another.

From all the “self” definition of the philosophers, Plato’s concept is the most compatible for
me. Absence of one soul cannot make up a human as a human. Without the intellect,
emotions, and desires, we can never be complete.

3. AUGUSTINE

Augustine sees the self as being open to a relationship with God. He has two ways of
conceptualizing the self as radically oriented to God, namely self-presentation, and self-
realization. Augustine’s own life experience led him to the realization that in our innermost
selves, we were made for God and that nothing less than God can fulfil the human soul.

4. DESCARTES

The “self” for Descartes composes of mind (Cogito) and body (Extenza). He believed that in
order for man to be a man, he must use his thinking abilities or his mind in order to do
something or improve himself.

I agree to his “self” concept because we can never be a man who does the right thing, who
lives his life with purpose, who is able to investigate, understand or analyze something if we
don’t use our mind or our ability to think.

5. HUME

The self, according to Hume, is "that to which our various impressions and ideas are
supposed to have a relation" If any impression gives rise to the concept of self, that
impression must kept constant throughout our lives, because self is supposed to exist in this
manner.

6. KANT

According to Immanuel Kant, we have an inner and outside self. The outside self and the
inner self are the two mental parts that make up our consciousness. The outer self is mainly
basic since it is the initial layer through which we can experience the physical world around
us. The inner self is to comprehend the physical environment and how it impacts us.

7. RYLE

“The self is the way people behave and is basically our behavior” It is from Ryle that true self
is the way we behave in our everyday life.

I believed that Ryle’s concept of self is applicable to most of us as we reflect on ourselves

through our everyday routine. We can never go wrong in differentiating ourselves based on
what we always do in our life.

8. MERLEAU-PONTY

Maurice Merleau-Ponty believed physical body to be an important part of what makes up

the subjective self. Any attempts to separate our "living body" into different entities are
artificial and senseless. The body and mind are all one.

For me, it is true that mind and body cannot be separated from each other. We cannot make
our lives prosperous if the ability of us to think is absent. We can do wrong things if we
don’t think first before we do anything.
