“History of Volleyball”

Brief History of Basketball


Volleyball was invented in 1895 by William G. Morgan, physical
director of the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) in Holyoke,
Massachusetts.
.

❕ Morgan created a new game volleyball (before it was called


Mintonette) as a pastime to be played preferably indoors and by any
number of players.
❕The FIVB is the governing body responsible for all forms of
Volleyball on a global level.

Basic Principles of Volleyball


▪ Volleyball is a team sport in which two teams of six
players are separated by a net. Each team tries to score
points by grounding a ball on the other team’s court
under organized rules.

Basic Skills in Volleyball

A player stands behind the inline


and serves the ball, in an attempt
to drive it into the opponent’s
court. The main objective is to
SERVE
make it land inside the court.

Also called reception, the pass


is the attempt by a team to
PASS properly handle the
opponent’s serve, or any fom
of attack.

It is usually the second


contact that a team makes
with the ball. The main goal
of setting is to put ball in the
SET
air in such a way that it can
be driven by an attack into
the opponent’s court.

Also known as the spike, is


usually the third contact a
ATTACK team makes with the ball. The
object of attacking is to handle
the ball so that it lands on the
opponent’s court and cannot
be defended.

It refers to the actions taken by


players standing at the net to
stop or alter an opponent’s
attack. A block that is aimed at
BLOCK
completely stopping an attack,
thus making the ball remain in the
opponent’s court , is called
offensive.

Digging is the ability to


prevent the ball from touching
DIG one’s court after a spike or
attack, particularly a ball that
is nearly touching the ground.

VOLLEYBALL COURT A volleyball court is 9 m * 18 m


(29.53 ft. * 59.06 ft.), divided into
equal square halves by a net with a
width of one meter(39.4 in).

VOLLEYBALL
Volleyball usually comes in two sizes: youth
and adult. The youth ball has a
circumference of around 25 to 26 inches,
while the adult volleyball has a
circumference measuring 25.5 to 26.5
inches.

VOLLEYBALL NET
Volleyball nets: have a surface height of 39” (1
m) from top to bottom and are constructed
with a polypropylene or nylon netting with a
mesh size of 3.9” (10 cm) and are capped with
stiff headbands along the perimeters.

Volleyball Nets :The most standard and commonly used indoor volleyball net
height is 7 feet, 11 5/8 inches for men and 7 feet, 4 1/8 inches for women.
