PROJECT INSTRUCTIONS

DEPARTMENT OF STRUCTURAL AND MATERIAL ENGINEERING

UNIVERSITI TUN HUSSEIN ONN MALAYSIA

BFC 13903 – CIVIL ENGINEERING MATHEMATICS 1

General:
1. This project is to be carried out in a group of maximum FOUR (4) students.
2. This project will contribute 20% to the total mark.
3. Submission due date is on end of week 11 this SEM

Tasks:
1. Carry out a project based on the application of differentiation and integration in civil
engineering field. Solve Problem 1 and Problem 2.
2. Problem 1:
Listed in Attachment 1 are 12 traffic data collections around Parit Raja. From the given data:
1) Plot graph of Volume vs Time and Average Speed vs Time.
2) From both graph;
i. Find the intervals where it increasing, decreasing or constant.
ii. Determine the rate of change for each 15 minutes intervals.
iii. Locate all relative maximum and minimum number.
iv. Evaluate the absolute maximum and minimum number.
3) Plot the graph of Cumulative Volume vs Time. From the graph, calculate the rate of
change for each 15 minutes intervals and investigate the average rate of change of the
graph.

Problem 2:
Attachment 2 shows the data from experimental testing of concrete prism under flexural load.
From the experimental results:
1) Plot the graph of Flexural Strength vs Deflection.
Group 1: Normal Concrete (Density 2400) – Flexural Strength (kN) vs Deflection (mm).
Group 2: Normal Concrete (Density 2400) – Flexural Strength (kN) vs Deflection (m).
Group 3: Normal Concrete (Density 2400) – Flexural Strength (N) vs Deflection (m).
Group 4: Foamed concrete (Density 1600) – Flexural Strength (kN) vs Deflection (mm).
Group 5: Foamed concrete (Density 1600) – Flexural Strength (kN) vs Deflection (m).
Group 6: Foamed concrete (Density 1600) – Flexural Strength (N) vs Deflection (m).
Group 7: Foamed concrete (Density 1400) – Flexural Strength (kN) vs Deflection (mm).
Group 8: Foamed concrete (Density 1400) – Flexural Strength (kN) vs Deflection (m).
Group 9: Foamed concrete (Density 1400) – Flexural Strength (N) vs Deflection (m).
Group 10: Mortar (Density 2000) - Flexural Strength (kN) vs Deflection (mm).
Group 11: Mortar (Density 2000) - Flexural Strength (kN) vs Deflection (m).
Group 12: Mortar (Density 2000) - Flexural Strength (N) vs Deflection (m).
2) Energy of a concrete can be calculated by finding the area under the graph. Therefore,
evaluate the energy of the concrete by using two (2) methods:
i. Portioning the area under the graph and manually calculate the area of each
portion.
ii. From the graph, add a trendline of polynomial to get an approximate function and
integrate the function to get the area under the graph.
3) Compare and justify the value from both methods.

3. Prepare an organize report which include the followings:


- Report cover should include: Group number, group member (with matric no.), section, course
name and code, lecturer’s name, session, semester & UTHM Logo
- Table of content
- Introduction / Background
- Problem
- Solution
- Conclusion
- References
- Appendixes (Pictures/Minutes of Meeting/Proof of Discussion)
- Project rubric
- Separator for each part

None of above should be left out or else a penalty in the form of marks deduction will be
incurred.

4. This project needs to be present on week 13 via google meet. Please provide a proper slide for
presentation

Assessment:
The assessment of this project will be based on three main elements: cognitive, psychomotor and affective
(please refer to project rubric).

Warning:
1. If the project is submitted late without sufficient cause, a penalty shall be applied. A deduction
of 50% of the maximum mark available from the actual mark achieved by the group shall be
imposed upon expiry of the deadline. A further deduction of 5% of the maximum mark
available from the actual achieved by the group shall then be imposed of the next subsequence
days.
2. Plagiarism and academic dishonesty can have some severe penalties and repercussions. Any
blatant copying, evidence of electronic files shared, or exact same report/problem/solution will
result in a grade of ZERO for all parties involved.
