Lana Del Rey has become a hugely adored miserablist thanks to a perpetually wounded
voice and plainspoken poetry. Her fourth album as Lana Del Rey luxuriates in warm
textures and laconic tempos that recall pre-rock-era pop, her voice given Rick Nelson
levels of reverb that adds ruminative weight to even her most basic observations.
Shying away from the big riffs of 2013’s Ultraviolence and the glossy noise of 2015’s
Honeymoon, Lust for Life is almost like a fan service album, solidifying the idea of Del
Rey as a trapped-in-space pop star of yore who happened to touch down in Los
Angeles in the era of streaming music and sponsored afterparties.
Lust for Life recalls the gloomy pop laid down by the Walker Brothers in their mid-Sixties
heyday, only with trap-era touches, allusions to modern problems and a penchant for
songs that drag on just a little too long. It’s dense yet spacious, and there are surprising
flourishes buried within: “When the World Was at War We Kept Dancing,” on which Del
Rey worries about the fate of the country, buries bachata guitars in its anxious haze.
Look at you kids with your vintage music,” croons Lana Del Rey on “Love”, the opening
track from her fifth studio album Lust For Life. It’s a coy, self-referential nod to her
music’s fascination with Fifties and Sixties Americana and, well, all things vintage, as
well as the devoted fanbase she has built since her breakout in 2011 with “Video
Games”. From her Priscilla Presley-looks to the pervading themes of Old Hollywood
glamour and ill-fated love to her music videos’ heavy use of archive imagery, Lana Del
Rey is the very embodiment of old meets new – a living Instagram filter whose
unforgettable style and sound is most realised on her new album. On first listen,
there’s a more commercially minded sound here, one that was lacking from both
Ultraviolence and Honeymoon. Title track “Lust For Life”, where she enlists the help of
The Weeknd, is a fine example. It delivers one of the album’s most infectious choruses
as the two stars tell each other to “take off, take off, take off all your clothes”. Del Rey’s
love-in with hip hop has been evident since the release of her debut album Born To Die
and its influence is peppered throughout Lust For Life. Alongside The Weeknd she also
brings Playboi Carti and A$AP Rocky onboard, the latter on “Groupie Love”, where she
plays the fawning fan gazing up at her idol as he strums a guitar on stage. It’s a song
that’s also home to one of the most exquisitely executed bridges on the record.
The sense of melancholy now synonymous with Del Rey still lingers and her
relationships still seem doomed, but for an artist who has made sadness a personal
brand, things are decidedly less depressing this time around – she’s even smiling on the
album artwork! Gone too is the girl singing of a lover who, “hit me and it felt like a kiss”
and in her place is a woman who now challenges her boyfriends. “Could it be that I fell
for another loser?” she asks on “In My Feelings”. Later on, she tells the boys to keep
quiet and “don’t try to be funny”. Even her favourite muse, the American Dream, comes
under fire: “Is it the end of America?” she ponders on “When The World Was At War We
Kept On Dancing”. It comes as no surprise that, in the age of Donald Trump, Del Rey’s
rose-tinted, idealistic perception of her country has been cast aside for a more critical
and caustic stance. This is no better realised than in “God Bless America – And All The
Beautiful Women In It” where two loud gunshots reverberate in the chorus. It makes for
one of the record’s more memorable moments.
At a time when some of pop’s biggest acts are suffering from an identity crisis, Lana Del
Rey’s self-awareness blossoms throughout Lust For Life. She treads new and familiar
ground and although the album is not a masterpiece, the foundations are there for Del
Rey to build on for her next LP. Like Lorde's Melodrama, Lust For Life is an
accomplished piece of art, an antidote to the banal tunes permeating the charts and one
of the best albums released this year so far

In the 2020 Asian Young Designers Competition, Mr. Yson Karl Dañez of the College of
Architecture (CADBE) received the "Best Green Innovation Award" for the category
Architecture.
The winning  of Dañez's entry titled "ESKINITA," a prototype of Filipino Above-The-
Road Neomarket, was designed to create a centralized street market unit by taking
advantage of space above the road. It also aims to provide a forum for street vendors
and booming small businesses to develop especially in the midst of the pandemic.
Eskinita aspires to redefine and reinvent the Filipino street culture of the 21st century as
compassionate, creative, environmental-friendly, and global.
The Asia Young Designer Awards (AYDA) was first launched in 2008 and is part of the
vision of Nippon Paint to cultivate the next generation of design talents. The award
provides a forum to encourage students of architectural and interior design to extend
their skills by cross-learning opportunities and networking with key players in the
industry, as well as other students of interior design in the country.
Since then, AYDA has increased in terms of scope and stature to become a major
award in Asia for architecture, attracting more than 28,000 applications from more than
900 tertiary schools across 15 geographical locations across Asia to date. Over the
years, through targeted coaching, mentoring and skills-building through seminars,
AYDA has influenced thousands of young and aspiring student designers, providing
them with diverse opportunities to engage with renowned speakers and key figures in
the design industry. The platform helps designers to learn from their fellow peers from
within and across borders, in addition to exposure to first-hand industry expertise.
Every year, AYDA provides a further platform for emerging creative talents to expand
their design limits outside the norm. For example, the Asia Young Designers of the Year
were given a chance to embark on a lifetime opportunity: an all-expense 6-week
placement at the Design Exploration Program at the Harvard Graduate School of
Design (Harvard GSD) in the United States. They will have the luxury of studying and
witnessing intense studio practice, seminars, conferences and field trips.
