VTFT intern Eliza Hendrick taught a 30-minute math lesson on heavy and light objects to a 1st grade class. Students watched a video defining key vocabulary like ounces, pounds, and tons. They then used a balance to compare the weights of various objects, identifying which objects were heavier or lighter. To assess understanding, students completed a worksheet matching objects to sentences using pesado/liviano and shared their work with a partner. They also left an exit ticket commenting on the weight of another object.

Topic of Lesson: Heavy and Light Grade Level of Students: 1st Time/Length of Lesson: 30 min. Date Taught: 5/27/22 VTFT LESSON PLAN TEMPLATE Need to know what goes where? Click here! In this lesson… students will learn the difference between heavy and light Overview objects, as well as how to use a balance through video instruction and an interactive lesson with a balance. MA.1.3.4 The student will use nonstandard units to measure and compare length, weight, and volume (SOL 1.10)
Standards of The student will use problem solving, mathematical communication,
mathematical reasoning, connections and representations to: Learning - Measure the weight of various nonstandard units - Identify a balance or pan scale as an instrument to measure weight - Using a balance scale, compare the weight of two objects, using the terms lighter, heavier or the same Students will be able to… Objectives understand the concepts of light and heavy and compare objects’ weights with a balance. Yo puedo comparar el peso de dos objetos. I can compare the weight of two objects. Learning Target Yo puedo usar una balanza. I can use a balance. Necessary Prior - Writing - Understanding of Spanish Knowledge - Balance - Various objects of different weights - empty can - full can - ball of paper Materials - small orange - pencil - Slideshow - Worksheet - Exit ticket (online discussion board) 1. Teacher will play BrainPopJr's “Ounces, Pounds, and Tons” video for students to watch as a group. a. Throughout the video, the teacher will pause and highlight key Introduction/Hook vocabulary (ounces, pounds, tons, weight, heavy, light) and write the Spanish translation on the whiteboard. 2. Students will complete the easy or hard quiz for the topic provided on BrainPopJr. 1. Teacher will have a table at the front of the class with a balance and a bag with various objects inside. a. You saw in the BrainPop video they used a balanza to weigh objetos and see which was más pesado or más liviano. Nosotros tenemos una balanza también y yo tengo una bolsa con algunas cosas. Hmm, me pregunto - que tengo en la bolsa? 2. Teacher will take two objects out at a time and put them in the balance. a. For the first several objects, the teacher will point out how the heavier objects are on the side that is lower and lighter objects are on the side that is higher. Instructional b. One students understand how the balance works, the teacher will begin calling on students to guess which object will be heavier Activities & before placing them in the balance, then explain which object is Strategies heavier/lighter and why after placing the items in the balance. c. Teacher will use different combinations of the objects they have to demonstrate to students how to compare weights. 3. Teacher will show slideshow with an example of the student worksheet and explain directions to students. a. Students will complete their own worksheet, finishing the sentence with the correct word (pesada) and drawing an object from their cartuchera on the other side of the balance. 4. Students will share their completed worksheet with a partner. 5. Teacher will instruct students to turn in papers to the collection bin at the front of the classroom. 1. Students will complete the exit ticket posted on Schoology by Closure Activity commenting the correct answer to the question (pegado). Key Vocabulary or Pesado (heavy), liviano (light), onzas (ounces), libras (pounds), toneladas (tons) Concepts Teacher observation Question and answer Assessments Easy/hard quiz on BrainPopJr Worksheet Exit Ticket Students who finish BrainPopJr quiz early can do the second quiz or one of the Accommodations other activities offered with the video.
