1. TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION OF THE EQUIPMENT

Introduction

1.1 Sound Power Telephone is a marine grade SPT specially designed for use on board
ships and submarines for emergency communication between hard wired locations in the
event of power supply failure or when the normal channel of communication fails.

1.2 The Sound Power Telephone has following mode of operation:-

(a) Self-Powered Mode. In this mode, the system is does not need any
power from outside. Whatever power required is generated by cranking the handle
on the unit.

1.3 System Configuration:

The system consists of the following units:

(a) SPT-12 (M), BULKHEAD MOUNT

(Part No - LIN-P-SPT/12M/BM-16)

Accessories: Following accessories also form part of the system:-

(i) TELEPHONE HANDSET

(ii) 36 POLE JUNCTION BOX

(iii) AUDIO VISUAL ALARM UNIT

(iv) STOWAGE BOX

OPERATION AND SPECIAL

FEATURES

1. OPERATION OF THE SYSTEM WITH ITS SPECIAL FEATURES

A) Communication: Refer to Drawing-1 in the Drawing at Appendix A

2.1 To call Station-2 from Station-1 (SPT), switch the Station Selection Switch of
Station-1 to respective position and crank the handle for 2.5 to 3.5 RPS for 7
seconds. A cranking buzzer can be heard and also the LED for the called Station-2
will glow as per the cranking speed.

2.2 In the called Station-2, the same buzzer can be heard along with the glowing
LED for the calling Station-1. On hearing the buzzer and identifying the Calling
Station by the glowing led, the Station Selection Switch of Station-2 should be
selected to respective position and the handle must be cranked a few times.

2.3 The Buzzer and respective LED will come ‘ON’ at the Calling Station-1 as
acknowledgement. Now both Stations (Calling and Called) can lift the handset and
talk.

2.4 Once the communication is over, place the Telephone Handset on the cradle.

2.5 If the volume of the communication comes down at a particular SPT, it

indicates that it is time to crank that SPT. To continue the communication session,
crank the handle for a few times and the volume of the communication will come
up.

B) Communicating while wearing Headset: This may be required when to

communicate from a location which required hands free communication. The user will
not be able to communicate using normal handset. Refer to Drawing-1 of Drawing
Appendix A

2.6 Remove the Handset at Station-2 and connect the Headset, as shown figure-
1. Wear it and adjust the boom microphone in front of mouth.

2.7 Switch the Station Selection Switch on Station-2 to respective position and
crank the handle for 2.5 to 3.5 RPS for 7 seconds and proceed the
communication as normal.

2.8 The voice of the communication will be picked up by the microphone and will
be sent to the called Station- Station-1.

2.9 If the volume of the communication becomes weak, the SPT can be charged
by cranking the called as explained in A) 2.5

C) Audio Visual Alarm Unit to attract the user in noisy areas:

In noisy areas, SPTs are attached to AUDIO VISUAL ALARM UNIT. Refer to Drawing-1
of the Drawing at Appendix A. When Subscriber A calls Station-2, along with the LED on
Station-2, the AUDIO VISUAL ALARM UNIT attached to it also will start flashing &
sounding respectively, to attract the nearby user as AUDIO VISUAL ALARM UNIT in
noisy areas.
