III. VALUES-BASED LEADERSHIP

DAY I. LEADERSHIP IN UNCERTAIN TIMES

Warm-up: Think about your personal experiences helping people cope in challenging times.
Write on the spaces below how you have strategically led your teachers, colleagues, parents,
home learning partners, or students during times of uncertainty.

The health crisis of COVID-19 had a worldwide effect at almost every level in society. This crisis

generated anxiety and uncertainty in school principals. During this unprecedented situation, I used my

personal leadership resources in new manners and by varying degrees, while at the same time, I had

to be adjusted to the crisis, in which a high volume of adaptations and modifications were needed.

Therefore, as a school principal, acting as a manager, I boosted the skills of the team by effectively

using my personal leadership resources. This enables teachers to take on their responsibilities and to

experience an increase in self-esteem which makes them perform better at work and feel that they

have a greater involvement in the organization. Leadership is more necessary than management in

times of crisis, as it focuses on solving complex problems with an unknown or difficult solution,

mobilizing collective efforts, and promoting collaboration. There is a greater emphasis on the present

state of on people's emotions during a crisis, which therefore requires more and better communication

and greater flexibility.

Reflect.

Think about your values-based practices that focus on personal, collective, and relational
wellness. Which of the values are you practicing in your school or district? Why is this
important to your leadership practice? Use the space below for your reflection.

The well-being of school leaders is crucial as they embrace the new normal education amid
COVID-19 health crisis and face the accompanying challenges. Being optimistic and a sense of
purpose are values I have demonstrated to deal more effectively with these challenges.
Optimism is defined as a tendency to expect positive outcomes. This means that even when
bad things happen, optimistic leaders look beyond the events in front of them and focus on the actions
they can take to get themselves and their business beyond the current crisis.
Having a clear sense of your purpose helps you to navigate many of the challenges that will
come your way as a leader. Purpose provides you focus on how you want to contribute to the world. It
directs you to the environments and communities where your contributions will be meaningful to you
and appreciated by others. Your purpose serves as a guide when making decisions and choosing
which paths to pursue. When your purpose is clear, it acts like a compass. The better you understand
your purpose, the easier it is to identify priorities and work towards your goals. A leader with purpose
is also concerned to align their own personal values with their own definition of success, and achieve
a sense of meaning and well-being in attaining their goals.

Reflect.

How would you describe your learning experiences about deepening your understanding of
values-based leadership? What changes do you want to see in yourself as a school leader that
can help you strategically lead your school community to thrive in a volatile, uncertain,
complex, and ambiguous world? Write your reflections on the spaces below.

It allows us to constantly push for better, and to develop our own standard of what makes a

good school leader.

I will switch to a values-based leadership style because it is a leadership style that builds itself

on the values of both the leader and their team. It's based on the philosophy that people motivate

themselves through the implementation of their personal values in their daily lives. Organizations that

follow a shared set of beliefs have employees who are more likely to work together, which can

increase productivity.
