Practical: Density

 Investigate density using direct measurements of

mass and volume.
 Write down the procedure to investigate the
regular shapes and irregular shapes.
Regular shapes (e.g. cubes, spheres, cylinders):

Procedures:

1. Use a ruler to find the length, width, height and calculate the volume with the
formula, V = lwh.

2. Then, place the cube on an electronic balance to identify its mass.

3. Calculate the density of cube with the formula,

Density = mass/volume.

Irregular shapes:
1. Pour water into a measuring cylinder and identify its volume. Record it as V1.

2. Get the cube and gently place it into the measuring cylinder. Make sure the
water doesn’t splash out while placing it.

3. Get the reading of the volume. Record it as V2.

4.Subtract V1-V2 to identify the volume of the irregular object.

5. Take out the irregular object and dry it. Then measure its mass on an electronic
balance.

6. Find the density of the irregular object with the formula, Density =
Mass/Volume.

Volume of cylinder = Pi r^2 h

Volume of Sphere = 4/3 Pi r^3

Volume of Cube = lwh
