TA notes: EXPERIMENT 13

Discuss purpose: To see the relevance of organic chemistry in everyday life. Go

over introduction to lab.

Discuss procedure: 3 parts – soap, nylon, “smells”.

Part 1 – soap. STRESS CARE WITH SOLID NAOH – CONTAINER SHOULD KEPT
CLOSED AT ALL TIME. Go through procedure, point out that once the heating is
going, students may start Part 2.

Part 2 – nylon. STRESS HAZARDS AND WASTE DISPOSAL (nylon in container in

hood, spare solutions in waste liquid container in hood). Set up apparatus to show
students how it works.

Part 3 – smells. Samples should be laid out on side bench. STRESS CORRECT WAY
TO SMELL! Be sure they recap the samples! Go through procedure for step 13. Point
out that glacial acetic acid is nasty!
