prepare a speech on the topic ‘E-Learning versus Face to Face Learning’

a. Informative, OR
b. Persuasive

TARGET AUDIENCE
Your course mates

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS

4
Delivering a speech is a soft skill that every profession requires. It is always wise to do some
research on the given topic before you plan your individual speech. You can search for
information from public domains, personal experience, demonstrations, definitions,
descriptions, explanations and workplaces to plan your speech.

Task Requirements:

Start by brainstorming the topic: ‘E-Learning Versus Face to Face Learning’.

a. Your speech should have an introduction, body and a conclusion with takeaway
points.
b. You can refer to various knowledge bases which focus on learning online and face to
face, use your personal observation and rely on your own experience. Your
interactions with family, friends and colleagues will be very useful for creating your
own content. At the end of the preparation, please ensure that the content of the
speech is appropriate for your target audience.
c. Plan your visual aids. You are encouraged to use technology, imagination, creativity
and innovation with appropriate sound and music (if necessary) to make your speech
presentable with proper verbal and nonverbal communication during your
presentation. You are free to use PowerPoint Presentation, iMovie, and other
software applications to enhance your speech presentation. You must note that this
is a SPEECH presentation (having you in the video) and not a video presentation
without you. You are encouraged to include an introductory slide that states your
full name, ID, Programme/ Course, Module Name and Code and The Title of your
Speech.
d. Time yourself and practise before a friend or an audience so that you would be
familiar with your points and satisfied with the final recording.
e. The duration of the speech should be between 8 and 12 minutes.
f. Ensure the following when recording your speech:
i. Be conversant with your topic.

5
ii. Dress formally and speak with confidence
iii. Make eye contact with the audience at all times
iv. The purpose of the speech must either be to share information on the pros
and cons of online learning and face-to-face learning and/or to persuade your
course mates to believe that either method of learning is better than the
other.
v. The recording screen must capture the top half of your body so that your
gestures and facial expressions are visible for at least half of the recording
session.
vi. Your speech must be informative, interesting and inspiring.
vii. You must conclude with your best takeaway points in the conclusion
viii. Please ensure that your recording is original, authentic and appropriate for
the topic
ix. You can be the scriptwriter, the speaker, the director and maybe even, the
producer of your own recording.
x. Submit your video online according to the instructions. If your video is larger
than 400MB, refer to the guidelines on how to compress your video for
submission. You should also include a link to your video as a backup in Task
2.

NOTE:
* Refer to the assignment rubric as a guide to achieve cohesion and coherence.
* Remember to refer to Topic 8 of OUMH 1303 Module

TASK 2 – REFLECTIVE REPORT (30%)

This task is an extension of your recorded speech presentation: Informative or Persuasive

Speech on the topic ‘E-Learning Versus Face to Face Learning’

1. Write a 4-to-5-page critical reflection on the process of preparing the recorded

speech presentation (Task 1). The structure of this report follows the basic essay
structure of introduction, body and concluding paragraphs. Refer to the sample
outline as a guide.
2. The essay should include:
i. Your reflection on the production, planning, recording and post-recording
stages.
ii. Your reflection on the challenges you faced during the four stages mentioned
in ‘i.’ and how you overcame them.
iii. Your thoughts on the writing process of your speech including your reflection
on the use of vocabulary, language and grammar during the writing and
recording stages of your speech.
iv. The following points to guide you through your reflective essay:
a. How did you plan to video record the speech?
b. Where and how long did you plan to record etc.?
c. How important were creativity and technology to you?
d. What were the challenges you faced in the process of recording the

7
video?
e. How did you overcome the challenges in ‘d.’?
f. What kind of feedback did you receive on your first or second
recording?
g. What were the changes you made in the subsequent recordings?
Why?
h. What are the things you think you can improve in future recordings?
i. How was your overall experience from writing the speech to recording
it?
j. What are the lessons that you have learnt from such an experience?
v. The feedback of a friend or well-wisher whereby you are to show him/her the
recording to find out whether the speech is informative OR persuasive. If
he/she believes that the speech is neither, ask for suggestions that might help
improve the speech. You are to share this feedback in the essay.
vi. Your personal thoughts on completing this task (the recorded presentation)
are highly encouraged.  How did you feel about it? If you feel that recording is
not advisable, what would be a better alternative? Justify your suggestion.

3. Refer to the assignment rubric as a guide to achieving cohesion and coherence.
