Flag Day Facts

Date When Celebrated : Always June 14th
Flag Day, is a day for all Americans to celebrate and
show respect for our flag, its designers and makers. Our
flag is representative of our independence and our unity
as a nation…one nation, under God, indivisible. Our flag
has a proud and glorious history. It was at the lead of
every battle fought by Americans. Many people have died
protecting it. It even stands proudly on the surface of the
moon.
As Americans, we have every right to be proud of our culture, our
nation, and our flag. So raise the flag today and every day with pride!
Properly Display Our Flag
Care and handling of the American flag is steeped in tradition and
respect. There is a right way and a wrong way to display the flag. This
is called Flag Etiquette. The American flag should be held in the highest
of regards. It represents our nation and the many people who gave their
lives for our country and our flag. Here are the basics on displaying the
American flag:
The flag is normally flown from sunrise to sunset.
In the morning, raise the flag briskly. At sunset, lower it slowly. Always,
raise and lower it ceremoniously.
The flag should not be flown at night without a light on it.
The flag should not be flown in the rain or inclement weather.

PS 346’s Virtual Career Day

JASA Remembers Veterans on
Memorial Day
BY AMANDA MOSES

JASA Starrett Senior Center

kicked off their Memorial Day
celebration a few days early on May
24th with a lunchtime commemo-
ration. JASA staff and volunteers
decorated the cafeteria with red,
white, and blue balloons and table-
cloths as well as numerous Ameri-
can flags to showcase their appre-
ciation for the veterans who’ve
served and sacrificed their lives.
Memorial Day is usually cele-
brated on the last day of May, honor-
ing all of those who have served in
the US Military branches, such as
the Navy, Airforce, Army and more.
The commemorative period was first
celebrated after the Civil War and was called Decoration Day. It did not
become a federal holiday until 1971.
For JASA member Marian Page, Memorial Day plays a significant
part in her family’s history. Several members of her family have
served, some even lost their lives.
“There are several members in my family that were in the military.
Even I have friends that I went to school with, unfortunately, they died
in Vietnam. I have a cousin that served in Desert Storm twice. I highly

Education Matters
Be’er Hagolah Visits FDNY Money Added this Week to New York
State Pandemic Electronic Benefit
Transfer

BY AMANDA MOSES

The New York State Pandemic Electronic Benefit (P-EBT) Food

cards distributed to students in September 2020 received a new
deposit of $375 this week thanks to a summer program extension.
This program was created through President Joe Biden’s ad-
ministration as part of the American Rescue Plan, while these funds
were set to expire on September 30th, the federal Department of
Agriculture (USDA) announced that for the summer $1.8 Billion in P-
EBT funds will remain in place to provide food for students
throughout the country.
Since the onslaught of the COVID-19 pandemic, food insecurity has
been exacerbated all throughout New York. In order to combat this
issue, the New York City Department of Education (NYC-DOE)
provided forms for parents to fill out if they are in need of food
assistance. The P-EBT card allows parents to shop for groceries
similar to using a credit card regardless of their income.
Make sure you utilize the money in your P-EBT card! If you do not,
the money will go back to the US Treasury. According to the
Agriculture department the $375 is given per child for the summer
months (that’s $6.82 for each day of the week).

Marching through Queens for Memorial Day

BY AMANDA MOSES

T
he Little Neck-Douglaston Parade honored veterans for their
service with their annual march starting at Jayson Avenue
and Northern Boulevard on May 31st. Hundreds of
spectators gathered beneath the sweltering sun with their flags in
hand, ready to cheer on performers and participants as they made
their way down Northern Boulevard.
Queens political leaders joined in the revelry along with New York
State Governor, Kathy Hochul. Some attendees saluted while
others proudly waved their flags, remembering those who’ve
sacrificed their lives for our country.
The march ended in Douglaston and participants were invited to
enjoy light refreshments as well as hotdogs and hamburgers.

Flag Day Facts Fun Features Answers
contnued from page 3
After a tragedy or death, the flag is
flown at half staff for 30 days. It’s
called “half staff” on land ,and “half
mast” on a ship.
When flown vertically on a pole,
the stars and blue field, or “union”,
is at the top and at the end of the
pole (away from your house).
The American flag is always flown
at the top of the pole. Your state flag
and other flags fly below it.
The union is always on top. When
displayed in print, the stars and blue
field are always on the left.
Never let your flag touch the
ground, never...period.
Fold your flag when storing. Don’t
just stuff it in a drawer or box.
When your flag is old and has
seen better days, it is time to retire it.
Old flags should be burned or
buried. Please do not throw it in the
trash.
Did you Know? There is a very
special ceremony for retiring the flag
by burning it. It is a ceremony
everyone should see. Your local Boy
Scout group knows the proper
ceremony and performs it on a
regular basis. If you have an old flag,
give it to them. And, attend the
ceremony. If you like to study flags,
