The Metamorphosis starts with Gregor Samsa, A salesman by profession who despises his job

as it is a travelling job and hence is very tiring, it also doesn't pay much and Gregor wants to
quit the job but still somehow clings on it as all three person of his family relies on his income,
living him off to survive.
The story starts with gregor waking up from an unsettling dream one morning and finding
himself converted into an insect, he becomes hopeless, sad and lonely and falls into a deep
state of depression because his already miserable life just turned much worse. Most of the story
is revolved around Gregor and his family trying to accept his new reality. Gregor's mother loves
him very much but now is not able to handle even the sight of him. Mr. Samsa, Gregor's father
who was totally dependent on gregor and didn't do anything when gregor was providing for all,
tries to kill him by throwing an apple at him as doesn't care what happens to him. Grete, His
sister takes care of him for the first few weeks although never looked at him and starts ignoring
him after few weeks of his insect life. Gregor's feels very alienated and helpess towards the end
of the book as he felt betrayed, cheated by his family members who have now disassociated
with him as he can't provide for them anymore. He feels it would be better if he disappeared
from this world as nobody cares about him. The deep sense of trauma that Gregor Samsa was
going through can be best explained by one of my favorite lines from the book when Gregor
says, "I cannot make you understand. I cannot make anyone understand what is happening
inside me. I cannot even explain it to myself". Gregor drowning in sorrow, still wounded by his
father's attack at him decides to starve himself off and dies a lonely death at the end of the
book.
This book can be summed up as Gregor Samsa's search for his identity. Franz kafka has
brilliantly has brilliantly portrayed the Gregor's quest for exisistenialism. According to my
interpretation, Kafka chose to name it metamorphosis not just because of Gregor's physical
change into an insect but because he wanted to highlight an even bigger metamorphosis
process, that is changes in the behavior of the society with an individual when he is not any
material use to them. Through this the author has tried to raised some profound questions on
Human existence, Alienations and different perspectives of life.
I would like to hereby conclude by posing a question that was it really Gregor samsa who
undergo a process of metamorphosis or the people around him?
