f course this is not the first time that this vehicle has
been kitted by Tamiya in 1:35, their 1977 release being
a staple diet for Soviet Armour fans until Trumpeter
got in the act with a kit of their own. Having built that
legacy kit, I was keen to see how this newer offering would
go together and having not seen the 2020 KV-1, I was able to
assess it with completely fresh eyes. As time would tell and
parts glued together, disappointment was very much not on
the list of conclusions… U

Anyone that has built the

that is familiar in this one, the
chassis that forms the basis of
the model being identical. For
those that haven’t, a few initial
pointers might be in order.
Moulded in their familiar dark

easier to remove them should you

everything kept separate ready for
final assembly.
I’ve already mentioned the tracks,
but it is worth reiterating just how
easy they are to assemble.
With only eighteen parts per side
and very explicit instructions to
guide your journey, even a beginner
would have little trouble with this
kit. Indeed, as an overall package,
this one really would suit those with
little experience in building armour

MINIART, UKRAINE

Two new 1:35 figure sets are on release
from MiniArt, from opposing sides of the
WW2 Eastern Front. 'Soviet Officers at
Field Briefing' comprises five standing
figures of Red Army tank officers planning
their next move. The figures sport a
tanker's boiler suit, leather coat and
standard Soviet battledress and three are
wearing/carrying the TSh-4 tanker's helmet.
Detail is fantastic and the poses are natural.
'Totenkopf Division Khakiv 1943' provides
the modeller with five seated/leaning
figures in heavy winter uniforms and are
sculpted in poses that would suit
A new feature for MiniArt is the inclusion
of resin heads which, by the nature of
casting this material, can offer better detail
on all sides of the head, plus no mould-
release lines whose removal can erode
detail. They are extremely well done and
capture the sullen expressions of these
frozen troops very well. Again, excellent
detail and great poses. Finally, we have a
pack of 1:35 'Italian Traffic Signs 1930s-40s'
which includes several different styles of
post plus decals for the signs themselves,
ideal for Italian Front dioramas. More

token inclusion; it is treated to a multi-part breakdown and will

WAR IN THE BALKANS – THE BATTLE FOR GREECE AND CRETE 1940-1941
JEFFREY PLOWMAN, PEN & SWORD
www.pen-and-sword.co.uk
This book was first published in 2013, but has just been reprinted which gives readers a new opportunity to grab this
superb description of what took place in the period when Commonwealth forces seemed to go from one defeat to
another. The expeditionary force sent to Greece was intended to halt or at least delay the Axis advance into the Balkan
area. Ultimately this was not successful, but we now know that it significantly delayed the German invasion of Russia,
and the Balkan war had a wider impact. The Commonwealth forces were evacuated, with many going to Crete. The
German invasion of this Mediterranean island was tougher than they expected, and decimated the Fallschirmjäger as a
major force. This book is packed with photos showing the conflict from both sides, and while some photos have been
published before, many of the pictures are extremely useful for modellers. Highly recommended. CLS
From the outbreak of WW2 until May 1940, the period of Phoney War saw Britain, France and Germany getting their
armoured forces prepared for the coming battles. When conflict erupted, the German forces swept through Western
Europe in a matter of weeks, despite the numerical strength of their opposition. This softback book in the Images of
War series, first published in 2013 and now reprinted, describes the campaign and provides the reader with a very
good summary of the key events. The highlight of the book has to be the photographs, carefully chosen to illustrate
the key vehicle types, and occupying about 80% of the pages. Some of the photos are very slightly fuzzy, but the
choice of the pictures is excellent, with the selection showing vehicles, aircraft, scenery and troops. It is unfortunate
that the photos of French vehicles invariably show destroyed of captured tanks. A very good and inexpensive
summary, this book will satisfy the majority of readers and give plenty of ideas for models. CLS

he latest to arrive at the TMMI office certainly falls into the latter
category! It’s a 1:12 kit of a Ford Model T and the passengers
are none-other than two of the most famous comedy actors
of all time; Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy. The model comes
from Italian manufacturers ‘Zeta Kit’ and they have captured the
likenesses of the pair to a breathtaking level of accuracy, thanks to
the skills of artist Daniele “Danko” Angelozzi. The car is impressive
too, comprising large resin castings for the body, injection-moulded
wheels and suspension, soft vinyl tyres, photo-etched metal radiator
face and decals. We will, of course, be bringing you a full-build feature
on this fabulous model soon, in TMMI! l
