SHS- Physical Science (Active Ingredients of Cleaning Products)

I. Introductory Concept
Home is our haven especially when we are so tired in our whole day work in
school or office. In this time of pandemic, the cleanliness of home is very important.
Good housekeeping requires high standard of cleanliness and absence of disease-
causing organisms like bacteria. All housekeeping tasks need the use of the right
tool for the right job.

The ingredients in your cleaning products fall into several different categories,
added to provide different characteristics and cleaning functions. Each product
formula is a careful balance of various ingredients that will work best for what you
are trying to clean. It is very important to know the active ingredients and the other
ingredients of these products for us to know how to use them, and when to use to
them. The knowledge on these products will help us to avoid the possible accidents
that may harm us.

No single product can provide optimum performance on all surfaces and all soils.
It is not surprising that many different household cleaners are available in the
market. They are formulated to clean efficiently and conveniently in many different
situations found at home.
There are lots of cleaning products we use daily in our homes, offices, or schools.
These cleaning products play a vital role to make our home safe and clean. They
also help in safely and effectively removing dirt, germs, and other contaminants.
They can also prevent the spread of infectious diseases and control allergens, such
as dust and mold, to keep us healthy. Cleaning products also enable us to care for
our homes and possessions. There are different kinds of cleaning products. These
are laundry detergents, bleaches, dishwashing products and other household
cleaners. Active ingredients are found in different household cleaning products.

III. Activities
A. Activity 1: The Secret Uses of Foods
Direction: Read the learning material that follows and try to determine the use
of fruits and vegetables as cleaning agents.

Cleaning has always been a part of our lives especially at home when
we create lots of mess while cooking or doing other things. We basically clean
everything with the cleaning materials we bought from the market like
detergents, bleach, dishwashing liquids or powders. But did you know? That
even the fruits and vegetables that we have around us or we bought from the
market as well can be of use in cleaning! Just like calamansi, where we often
use to make our favorite calamansi juice that is very rich in vitamin C could
remove stains and color in our clothes! Also, lemon, where we put in our
water to help detoxifying our body but also removes odor in our clothes! Might
our favorite papaya that is rich in fiber which is good for our body can also
remove stains. The main ingredient of your favorite ketchup, tomato can used
to clean metals like spoon and fork. And lastly, potato which is always part of
our favourite “ulam” like “menudo” and “caldereta”, can removes rust from our
clothes! That these fruits and vegetables are not only to be eaten but can be
of great help to us whenever need especially in cleaning.

Direction: Read the learning material and identify the active ingredient of the
following cleaning materials by matching column A with the correct answer on
column B. Write only the letter of answer on the blank provided at the right
side of the test paper.
INGREDIENTS IN HOUSEHOLD CLEANERS

Bleach is the generic name for any chemical product that is used
industrially and domestically to remove color from a fabric or fiber or to clean
or to remove stains in a process called bleaching. It often refers, specifically,
to a dilute solution of sodium hypochlorite, also called "liquid bleach".
Washing soda is a chemical compound with the formula Na2CO3, also known
as sodium carbonate, and it’s a salt of carbonic acid. Some use washing soda
to make homemade laundry detergent, to clean especially in hard water, and
some even use it as a laundry additive to soften water. Cosmetic mouthwash
may temporarily control bad breath and leave behind a pleasant taste but
have no chemical or biological application beyond their temporary benefit.
For example, if a product doesn’t kill bacteria associated with bad breath, then
its benefit is considered to be solely cosmetic. Therapeutic mouthwash, by
contrast, has active ingredients intended to help control or reduce conditions
like bad breath, gingivitis, plaque, and tooth decay. Fluoride is a proven agent
in helping to prevent decay. Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) is a surfactant that
can have a variety of uses, but in cleaning products, it is often used to break
water tension and attract dirt and grime away from the material it is intended
to clean. We use SLS that is derived from coconut or palm kernel oil from
renewable carbon plant-derived materials. We use SLS in our dish liquid,
laundry liquid, and some of our spray cleaners. We use Sodium Coco Sulfate
(SCS) in our hand wash, which is a very similar ingredient to SLS. Muriatic
acid is a colorless, ultra-pungent solution consisting of hydrogen chloride in
water. It is a very strong mineral and highly corrosive with numerous industrial
uses. It was historically produced with a common salt and vitriol, a kind of
sulfuric acid. Muriatic acid is also known as hydrochloric acid.

E. Activity 5: Chemicals Safe Tips


Direction: Read the learning material and answer the questions that follow.

Always follow the directions on the label of cleaning and disinfection


products to ensure safe and effective use. You may need to wear personal
protective equipment, such as gloves, goggles, or glasses, depending on the
directions on the product label. Ensure adequate ventilation (for example,
open windows and run fans). Use only the amount recommended on the
label. If diluting with water is indicated for use, use water at room temperature
(unless stated otherwise on the label). Label diluted cleaning or disinfectant
solutions. Store and use chemicals out of the reach of children and pets. Do
not mix products or chemicals. Do not eat, drink, breathe, or inject cleaning
and disinfection products into your body or apply directly to your skin as they
can cause serious harm. Do not wipe or bathe people or pets with any surface
cleaning and disinfection products. Special considerations should be made for
people with asthma. Some cleaning and disinfection products can trigger

Activity 5:
1. Flush your eye with water. Use clean, lukewarm tap water for at least 20
minutes. Use whichever of these approaches is quickest:
 Get into the shower and aim a gentle stream of water on your forehead over
your affected eye. Or direct the stream on the bridge of your nose if both eyes
are affected. Hold the lids of your affected eye or eyes open.
 Put your head down and turn it to the side. Then hold the lids of your affected
eye open under a gently running faucet. If you have access to a work site eye-
rinse station, use it.

 Young children may do best if they lie down in the bathtub or lean back over a
sink. Pour a gentle stream of water on the forehead over the affected eye or
on the bridge of the nose to flush both eyes.
 After following the above steps, seek emergency care by an eye specialist
(ophthalmologist) or your local emergency number. Take the chemical
container or the name of the chemical with you to the emergency provider. If
readily available, wear sunglasses to help reduce sensitivity to light.

 Don't put anything except water or contact lens saline rinse in the eye. And
don't use eyedrops unless emergency personnel tell you to do so.
